• UFOs Over Pine Bush, NY

In the 1980s, New York’s Hudson River Valley was home to a wave of extraordinary UFO encounters by thousands of people. It was explained away as a hoax perpetrated by a group of nighttime pilots in ultralights and this was enough to make it fade from the public consciousness, even among those in the UFO community. However, one town in the area has kept the memory of the events alive with a yearly fair and a recently opened UFO museum.

A book about the wave, “Night Siege” by J. Allen Hynek, Philip Imbrogno, and Bob Pratt, was published in 1998. Hynek died in 1986 before the book was published but actively investigated and contributed to the book. His wife, Mimi, helped edit the book after his death.

According to “Night Siege,” the wave began in Kent, New York, on New Year’s Eve 1982 with a sighting by a retired New York City police officer identified by the pseudonym,“Tony Vallor. He’d just christened his new house by smashing a champagne bottle against it, and his wife had sent him back outside to clean up the broken glass after he’d told her about it. As he was cleaning up the glass, he saw a group of red, green, and white lights to the south. At first he thought he was seeing a jet having trouble but it was moving too slowly to be a jet.

Vallor called for his wife and told her to bring their movie camera. As she stepped out, the lights were over the house. Vallor told the researchers that they seemed to connected by a V-shaped or boomerang-like structure. He said he heard a loud hum like a factory full of machines operating at a distance.

As Vallor was filming the object, which was about 500 feet above him, the colored lights went out and three white lights remained that formed a triangle. The investigators examined the film and reported in the book that the white lights were clearly visible with faint colored lights in the background, but they could see no structure.

Soon there were sightings all over the Hudson Valley of what became known as “The Westchester Boomerang” named after Westchester County, where many were concentrated. Local police departments received literally hundreds of calls, sometimes on a single night. Police officers themselves were among the witnesses.



The most common description was of a large boomerang-shaped object with lights along its “arms.” They were said to be as big as one, two, or three football fields, to hover or move as slowly as 15 mph, and were said to be completely silent. An odd claim that shows up repeatedly is that a witness says they found themselves wishing for a better view and that as soon as they thought that, the object moved quickly towards them and hovered in front of or over them.

Pine Bush, NY, is between 15 and 20 miles west of the Hudson River in Orange County. As the Hudson Valley Wave faded after 1987, reports continued to come out of Pine Bush. The area was put into the UFO spotlight in 1991 when Ellen Crystall published “Silent Invasion,” also written with Philip Imbrogno, which chronicles her 11-year investigation there. The book may be hard to take seriously by some (Crystall describes seeing, on her very first outing, more than a dozen ships flying about and periodically landing in and taking off from a field), it does contain names of witnesses to more likely events along with descriptions.

Crystall was introduced to the area by Harry Lebelson, a writer for Omni magazine posted as the sole person at the UFO desk. Lebelson wrote an article on Pine Bush for the magazine after coming to the area and interviewing witnesses. In her book, Crystall says that the editors at Omni didn’t take UFOs seriously, but saw them as good for business.

What was unique about Pine Bush was that it seemed to be a paranormal hotspot. Besides UFOs, there were reports of cryptids, phantoms, strange mechanical rumblings heard coming from under the ground, and farmers reported finding large sections of earth moved in their fields after seeing lights there the night before.

More and more people started coming to Pine Bush to skywatch and explore. Lines of cars parked along the roads and people gathering in the farm fields became common. At the same time, Pine Bush was becoming more developed. As “no trespassing” signs started to appear all over the area, there were frequent conflicts between the property owners and the paranormal adventurers. In 2000, a rumor started that Pine Bush had passed a law against skywatching. What had actually happened, according to the article “They Came From Pine Bush,” posted on the Hudson Valley Magazine website, was that there had been an “altercation” between a developer and some skywatchers. With encouragement from the developer, the police began enforcing a parking rule that made it illegal to park along West Searsville Road, a popular skywatching spot.

According to the introduction on the website for The Pine Bush Anomaly Archive, the loss of the farm fields (to developers) led to a loss of interest in the Pine Bush Phenomenon as there was less space available to explore or gather together in groups. However, two New Jersey residents who met as skywatchers in the area in 1995, managed to reignite interest in the area for those who are paranormal-curious.

In 2003, Vincent Polise started the website pinebushufo.com, where he posted several of his pictures and accounts of his paranormal experiences in Pine Bush. In 2005, Polise published the book, “The Pine Bush Phenomenon.” Then, in 2008, Polise and his friend, C. Burns (who keeps his identity a secret for fear of his interest interfering with his employment) launched The Pine Bush Anomaly Archive and “re-booted” it in 2017. Also involved is Linda Zimmermann, who has been researching and compiling witness accounts of UFOs in the Hudson Valley area since 2011. Both Polise and Burns can be heard in a recent interview describing their experiences on the episode “UFO Activity in Pine Bush, NY” on UFO Headquarters with Linda Zimmerman and Michael Worden.



In 2011, the first Pine Bush UFO Festival was held thanks to efforts of an organizing committee chaired by Sue Wiand. In 2013 it was expanded into an all day event and “Festival” was replaced by “Fair.” It is held on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend and draws around 7000 people. There are talks by UFO researchers and celebrities along with a parade and costume contest. World famous PodcastUFO Host Martin Willis attended this year’s fair.

On June 4, of this year, The Pine Bush UFO and Paranormal Museum was opened. Creator and director of the museum, Lance Hallowell, was interviewed on the UFO Headquarters episode aptly titled, “The Pine Bush UFO and Paranormal Museum.” Hallowell has experience as an event creator, having put together the Halloween event around the Legend of Sleepy Hollow in Sleepy Hollow, NY, and approached the museum in the same way. Instead of displays where visitors walk around and read, the museum offers guided tours and a more immersive experience.

The reader might be thinking that Pine Bush is now the East Coast Roswell, and some of the locals reportedly think of it that way. While that name has also been used for Exeter, New Hampshire, and Kecksburg, Pa., Pine Bush has made more of an effort to earn it.

ktsimage When Domanie Ragni moved to the Orange County hamlet of Pine Bush with her husband in 1990, it didn’t take long for the rumors about blinking lights in the sky and massive boomerang-shaped spaceships to reach her.

“At first, it sounded so outlandish! But as time went on, I heard similar stories from people I knew and respected and it all began to sound pretty fascinating,” she recently recalled.

Though it may be surprising to some, the Hudson Valley has long been known as a hotbed of UFO sightings, with locals reporting unidentified objects in the sky since the opening decades of the 20th century. And if you were to pinpoint the epicenter of what people describe as extraterrestrial events on a regional map, you’d land in tiny Pine Bush, in the town of Crawford on the western edge of Orange County.

“I’ve got newspaper articles from the 1950s and people who grew up in Pine Bush as kids giving accounts of seeing that classic saucer shape in the sky,” says C. Burns, who runs the Pine Bush Anomaly Archive, an ongoing oral history project with a mission to collect any and all information about Pine Bush’s unique history.

Burns — who prefers to go by his first initial due to the stigma sometimes involved in chasing the paranormal — has recorded hundreds of first-person accounts over the years. He points to the 1991 publication of the book Silent Invasion as the catalyst that really put Pine Bush on the map for the UFO obsessed. Full of photos and vividly-detailed personal experiences about author Ellen Crystall’s encounters in and around the Pine Bush area, the book caused a whole generation of amateur skywatchers to make their way there.

In fact, that’s how Burns, who grew up and lives in New Jersey, found out about the tiny town and its outsized reputation. “After I read Ellen’s book, I looked up Pine Bush on a map, and realized, ‘Hey, that’s not too far from where I live,’” says Burns. “So I jumped in the car and headed over.”

Armed with low expectations and a map, Burns says he showed up at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Pine Bush on a night in 1993. “When I started asking people in town where to spot UFOs, the responses I got were all over the spectrum, from are-you-crazy looks to ‘Oh yeah, you go up Hill Road and take a right.’”

Over the next five years, Burns began regularly visiting the area and fell in with a core group of locals who came out West Searsville Road, ground zero for skywatching in the 1990s, every night.

“I came away not understanding what exactly was going on in Pine Bush but knowing there was something unusual — mind-blowing really — happening up there,” he says.

• So what’s so special about Pine Bush?

What stargazers have witnessed in and around Pine Bush has changed over the years, from stories of traditional saucer shapes in the 1950s and 60s, to boomerang-shaped vessels and football field-sized triangles hanging directly above the trees in the 1980s, to intricate and unexplained lights that characterized sightings in the 1990s.

Since 2008, Pine Bush — which is located in the Orange County town of Crawford — has expanded its annual gathering of ufologists into an all-out festival celebrating the area's history as a hub of paranormal activity. Seven thousand people attended the Pine Bush UFO Fair in 2019.

Courtesy of Pine Bush UFO Fair “Some of the hallmarks of UFO sightings in the Hudson Valley are that they're very close, very large objects seen for prolonged periods of time,” says Linda Zimmermann, a Hudson Valley local and expert on paranormal activity who has written and lectured extensively on the Pine Bush phenomena.

“Growing up, there were always stories about UFOs but it wasn’t until I had a couple of sightings myself that I realized something was going on,” recalls Zimmermann.

“Stories about little disks zipping across the sky for five seconds make an impression,” she says, “but imagine a triangle the size of a football field seventy-five feet over your head for 20 minutes.”

Zimmermann, who has interviewed hundreds of people about their experiences over the years, says in the late 1980s and early 1990s, on any given night, there would be hundreds of people lining the old farm roads surrounding the Pine Bush area and waiting for something to happen. “And often,” says Zimmermann, “it did.”

So what is it about Pine Bush that would, hypothetically, make it so attractive to extraterrestrial visitors?

Despite decades devoted to documenting the area’s paranormal goings-on, Burns and Zimmermann aren’t quite sure how to answer that one. But you can’t be submerged in this world for so long without throwing a few theories at the wall. And these run the gamut, from alien-attracting mineral deposits on the banks of the nearby Shawangunk Kill, to the region’s large deposits of magnetite — a highly magnetized iron — and quartz.

“My theory is they’re fascinated by us and studying us,” says Zimmermann, “We study all sorts of species that we’re curious about, so that’s my best guess — they’re curious about these strange humans.”

Yet for many locals, the area’s history is an almost mundane part of life in Pine Bush.

“I always thought this was normal,” says Zimmermann. However, she’s come to understand that what’s normal for some, can be a very powerful and emotional experience for others.

“In many cases, I’m the first person people have told about their UFO experiences because there is still a stigma that hangs over it all,” she says. “I’ve had big strong grown men burst into tears because of the emotion, the fear, and the anxiety that wells up when they're recounting their stories.”

• Town sets sights on a new kind of visitor

These stories are a big part of the town of Crawford’s history. Since 2008, the town of Crawford has doubled down on its UFO heritage by steadily expanding what started as an informal annual gathering of ufologists into an all-out festival. Though the Pine Bush UFO Fair was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2019, seven thousand people showed up to revel in all-things alien.

“To put that in perspective, we only have a population of nine thousand,” says Ragni, who now serves as the town’s director of tourism.

This year Ragni is expecting an even bigger crowd when the fair returns over Labor Day weekend. And on June 4, the Pine Bush UFO & Paranormal Museum, a year-round exhibit highlighting the extraterrestrial activity of the Hudson Valley and New England, will open right downtown.

The New York Times recently reported that UFO sightings around the country have increased dramatically over the last year, as people found themselves with an abundance of free time and a desire to turn their eyes to the sky once again.

What’s more, the opening of the museum comes shortly after a highly anticipated deadline snuck into last year’s $2.3 trillion appropriations package, which requires the Defense Department to coordinate with U.S. intelligence agencies on a declassified report detailing any information they possess about the national security threats posed by UFOs.

Despite the publicity the report has created in major media outlets, those who have been swimming in these waters for decades are skeptical that the government will disclose any revelatory information. For Burns, it’s quite a role reversal.

“Aliens and UFOs — all that stuff is so popular nowadays to the point where I’m talking with people I work with about it and I’m the skeptic,” he says. “That really blows my mind.”

• UFO support group helps residents cope with paranormal past

In 1993, a tiny article appeared in the local paper, the Times Herald-Record. “It said, ‘Have you ever seen a UFO? If so, call this number,’” recalls Bill Wiland. “Well, I cut that out and pasted it on my desk.”

Wiland wasn’t the only one. The response to that simple query was so overwhelming that soon a monthly meeting formed, creating a forum for people who had experienced a UFO sighting to compare and share their experiences with others and find support.

Nearly 30 years later, the group, which calls itself the United Friends Observer Society, still meets pretty much the first Wednesday of every month. Over the years, the number of attendees has waxed and waned with the frequency of sightings in the area. Wiland, who now leads the group, says the dynamic has changed over the years too.
“In the early days, there was barely enough time each month to make it through everyone’s experiences,” he says.

Nowadays, those who show up are more likely to engage in theoretical discussions, like, for example, who might represent the citizens of Earth if the chance to join an intergalactic federation ever presented itself, or even more terrestrial matters like the coronavirus.

After being forced to cancel several meetings due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance in recent months has dwindled so much that Wiland’s not convinced the group will last much longer.

Today, if you take a drive down West Searsville Road, it would look almost unrecognizable. The empty fields once edged with the cars of eager stargazers have been replaced with dozens of new houses, transforming the countryside landscape that captured the imaginations of so many into a pretty standard picture of suburbia.

It’s this somewhat inevitable development that many believe has helped close the door on Pine Bush’s most prolific chapter of alien activity.

“Whatever this phenomenon is, it needs open space,” says Burns, who has studied other areas around the country — from Missouri to Washington — that have witnessed similar waves of UFO activity diminish after transforming from countryside to suburbia. For her part, though, Zimmermann’s not ready to shut the book on Pine Bush’s illustrious past. “If someone were to ask me where in New York they could go to try to see a UFO today, Pine Bush would be the first two words off my lips.”

I'm about 75 miles from there and remember hearing about it at the time, but not much and not for long. Night Siege is the only UFO book I own, but I haven't read it. I was 10 miles from that museum a few weeks ago. If I'd known about it, I might have stopped in.

• Pine Bush Anomaly

Part of the Core skywatching group in the 1990s, C. Burns started gathering accounts of unusual activity upon his becoming familiar with the Pine Bush area, eventually accumulating a noteworthy record of reported anomalous phenomena. Comparing this to other areas with similar reported phenomena, as well as other types of experiences such as hauntings, he started the Archive effort to produce a body of information that would be useful to both the anomaly researcher and those interested in local folklore. C.Burnsworks in a technology-centric aspect of the creative industries. The purpose of the Archive’s efforts is twofold: first, the archive hopes to record for posterity any and all accounts, stories and folklore of unusual experiences from the Orange/Ulster area of Upstate New York. When appropriate these accounts will be researched to gather any additional data that might benefit the understanding of the account, such as meteorological, geological and social data. Second, the body of accounts will be allocated to several groups, and statistical analysis will be applied to discern any possible patterns in regard to the physical and social aspects of the accounts.

The main vehicle to achieve the collection of accounts is a user-friendly but thorough report form, which can be downloaded through a link at the bottom of this webpage. As the Archive is designed to accommodate many theories on anomalous experiences, the questionnaire will contain a variety of questions not commonly associated with studies of anomalies. This form could be filled out in printed form and returned by ground mail, filled out electronically and returned by email, or completed verbally to a person representing the Archive. The completion of a report form may be followed up by brief additional questions designed to append the information already in the initial report. I live about 45 minutes from Pine Bush, and I have a good friend who saw the boomerang as a kid, with witnesses including his sister who stills maintains that they did indeed see it. Pretty cool!
I see plenty of things where I am, but nothing massive and up close like that.
