The Queen died Thursday surrounded by her family in Scotland. It's popping all over the news now.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, dies aged 96

Buckingham Palace says monarch has died at Scottish residence of Balmoral Castle

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96.

Prince Charles, 73, heir to the throne since the age of three, is now king, and the Duchess of Cornwall is now Queen Consort.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The royal family’s official website carried the message: “Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022” along with the official statement issued by Buckingham Palace.

The thing is even if it is Charles, it might not be "King Charles", he can use any of his Christian names; - Charles, Philip, Arthur or George.

I don't think he'll go with Charles because of the beheading thing, and not Philip, that's French, and Arthur would be a bit silly, my money is on George.

He is now King Charles III:

---According to reports, Charles does not need a coronation ceremony to assume the throne. He also inherited Queen Elizabeth’s titles as defender of the faith and supreme governor of the Church of England and he is also the head of 14 Commonwealth countries.

I'm actually quite shocked. I thought they would let the speculation linger before any announcement was made - perhaps for a few days and even if she was already dead. But there you have it. It's official. I now expect this to dominate the news cycle for many days to come.

Love her or loathe her, or having no strong opinion, don't doubt this is a major, certainly year-defining event - if not world wide then certainly in this country. We are not a Republic, but a Monarchy, so this is a big deal. It's the end of an Era, if not an Epoch. Remember, when Queen Elizabeth came to the throne WWII had only been over for seven years. Winston Churchill was Prime Minister! The vast majority of us here weren't even born yet. She had one hell of a long reign. Some (certainly Charles) will say too long.

It remains to be seen; he may take up the role out of duty, but he is 73 now and he's always seemed more comfortable as a country gent on his Highbury estate.

He also has quite a temper by all accounts, and the way Diana was treated still lingers in many peoples' minds.

William is a lot more popular, and a monarch is entitled to abdicate.

She is the second longest serving monarch in history. Louis XIV served for 72 years 110 days. According to the Sumerian King List En-men-lu-ana ruled for 43,200 years.

I found it interesting that the media refers to the event as 'the queen dies' or buckingham palace refers to 'the queen dies peacefully'; as opposed to a more sophisticated 'passes, or passed away'. Even this very thread formerly mentioned 'she passed' and has been changed to 'died' 9 September 2o22.

As an ex-pat american with nearly 4 years here in Ireland this month I must admit that we in america knew little of england's history and democracy dating well into the early 17oos. I even heard in the middle 9o's that the royal family was not as influential as the typical U.K. government and it was described as the monarchy was on the 'back burner'. [Which I did not believe to be true.] Everything I learned in my upbringing was that england was america's first enemy and in this the modern era they are best friends. [Which I am cautious about.]

So I am not surprised, I expected her to pass this year. She seemed very fragile. I was surprised at some of the commentary that I was reading on PA that suggested she had already passed away some time before now and then this news to-day. It sort of makes me think differently regarding the suspicious nature of certain commentaries and how huge the news actually is when it really happens. Same as the time there was some commentary about a friend of PA that was suggested she was in a coma and for the most part she was okay but troubled.

A wait and see approach serves me best in those circumstances. The truth in due time.

Default Re: The Queen Has Died

This livestream has just started, and Alexander Mercouris opens with some wise and statesmanlike words that I think are very apt.

When Queen Elizabeth took the throne, in 1952 and before many reading this now were born, Winston Churchill was Prime Minister on the UK, Stalin was General Secretary of the USSR, and Eisenhower was about to become President of the US. She has been there, as a symbol that has now passed, of a Britain (in a world) that now no longer exists.

And in a modern Britain which is facing massive economic and [potentially] social and political crisis, the loss of the Queen will feel to some, even unconsciously, as another figurative central tent pole that has collapsed leaving them with a loss of identity and a loss of hope or any national meaning or pride.

Mercouris says it far better than I just did, but the whole issue of what this means for the identity of the country is an important one. It's not about the passing of one elderly woman, it's about the passing of a symbol, something that was always there, year in and year out, whatever happened anywhere, that in many ways had held Britain together in maybe more ways than many had ever been consciously aware of.
