Default What genres of cinema do you prefer?

I am very impressed with thrillers, detectives, dramas and comedies. Comedy is a way to relax for me. And all the other genres I have identified help me to look at the world from a different angle. Think. Some of my favorite films are: Constantine, The Devil's Advocate, Route 60, Hell (1994), Bitter Moon, Easy Virtue, ShowGirls.

Historical epics. Movies like Braveheart, Last Of The Mohicans. Apocalypto, Troy etc.

I love to laugh but I rarely watch comedies. They're always so lousy. Maybe I expect too much. I dunno.

This will likely sound weird: movies that take place in small towns, preferably with miserable weather. And dark pubs. Could be 4 hrs long and plotless and it wouldn't matter - I'd watch riveted the entire time.

Supernatural thrillers: The Mothman Prophecies, Take Shelter.

Take Shelter might be the biggest cinematic secret of all time. It's pure genius. But most of the people I've mentioned it to have never seen or heard of it. I can't believe it. Here's a short trailer:

Most definitely, Science Fiction. That actually opens the door to a whole diversity of styles. I see three really good ones listed above. What dreams may come and Take Shelter. The moviesLife, Prometheus and Blade Runner both films are some of my favorites. Ex Machina is another brilliant film. Gotta add the movie "Equals" which is a prophetic masterpiece.

Maybe the best movie ever made was "Apocolypto" in my book. It is well worth more than one watch. One watch just to appreciate everything about it is well worth the time. Had to come back and add The Passion of the Christ and Braveheart ,Mel Gibson has created several masterpieces.

Can't stand romance movies for romance's sake. Kind of wish I could lose myself in that stuff. Now a romantic relationship within the story that has meaning can be wonderful.

I love it when I have actually seen a funny movie, but most are pretty goofy. An oldy that I love is Groundshog Day

Don't like to watch any movies that were created to promote a woke doctrine.... gosh I've been tough on the woke dogma lately.

Recently, I've got to admit to watching a few romcom movies with my wife ... I've put that 'blip' down to getting older and somewhat softer after being married for 30 years.

sci-fi movies for sure, I still waiting for Neuromancer, hope I can watch it in my lifetime haha
Dune (the new and the old ones) are pretty good.
Philip K Dick (A scanner darkly; Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep(known as Blade Runner); Total recall, minority report, next, screamers,..)
    First Alien movie
A germany movie from the 60's called Simulacra (don't know original title), probably based on the novel with the same title from 63 by K Dick.

Some movies made by Ridley Scott, he has a great mind to movies.

There is so many and I would love to see anything novel by William Gibson to become a movie, they are trying to make Neuromancer, but who knows when they will finish it!
After they had done Ernest Cline (Read Player One), I believe anything else can be done.

I find that touching that you would do that to spend time with your wife...she has a real sweetie!!!!

I don't have any problem with them. Sometimes I wonder what life could be like if I'd spent my free time reading romance novellas and watching Rom Coms, would I believe that everything is fine and we are just waiting to flatten the curve?

I also really like American and French films from the 70s to the 90s. They are not so stamped, they are more real and alive.

I am expanding my love of international films. They offer so much. I love all time frames from them. I love the little peak into so many wonderful cultures, locations and traditions. I think the 70-90's in american film making was really special and innovating. Have you ever gone back to some of the film noir of earlier times. I love that whole tradition in film making. Do also love that feel of France at that time, what a great culture.

Germans do good movies as well, here is an experimental genre that worked (in my opinion), you could even call it a thriller of some sort

I watched when it came out on cinemas in 98 or 99 can't remember, I enjoyed it a lot.

All about Sci-Fi for me. Second is historical drama. Sometimes comedy but the really good ones are rare.

I also watched a lot of Eastern movies recently. They can make some quite good ones, I find them even better than 'Hollywood' blockbusters since the Eastern ones go without the political messaging such as ID politics, feminism or 'diversity' (well, mostly).

Why I watched some Zombie stuff lately I cannot explain myself as I do not watch horror flix normally (unless it is a genre mix e.g. 'Alien' as horror-sci-fi), maybe because it is such a good metaphor for what is happening nowadays? Not sure.

I was asked something similar the other day by my sister asking me what my top three favorite movies were and what my favorite sitcom was! Without much thinking at all I blurted, "That is easy sis!, Shawshank Redemption, We're No Angels and Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and my favorite sitcom I can seem to watch anytime? "Hogan's Heroes" and then I caught myself and started my psycholanalysis because it has to say something that I love prison break movies and shows! Oh boy! ;-) myst be my early childhood growing up with an abusive Father in WV but we don't want to go there!

Coming of age movies - Stand By Me, which reminds me always of the freedom and agonies of my youth, when we would go off for the day on various adventures. A lost world now.
Anything from M Night Shyamalan...'Signs' started it off for me.
Good science fiction which makes you think, not just CGI for the sake of it.
The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy - Peter Jackson came impressively close to Tolkein's world.

@Mike I did watch "Take Shelter" in 2011 if I recall correctly, it was a gem then, it is a gem now

My choice, just to name a few:

"The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "Blade runner", "Das Boot", "The Thin Red Line", The Bunker", "Kingdom of Heaven (Directors Cut), "Le gout des autres", "Un air de famille" , La Grande Vadrouille", "Once Upon a time in the west", "The Thing", "My Name is Nobody", "They Live", "Escape from New-York 1997"... and many more.
