Default THE ALPINIST: a tribute to Marc-André Leclerc

Folks, some of you may have seen this being promoted on Netflix: The Alpinist is an acclaimed documentary that with some more-then-spectacular camera work follows the amazing feats of inspired Canadian solo climber Marc Leclerc.

But it's more than that, as Leclerc was also an amazing human being — widely respected and admired by everyone who knew him, whether they were fellow-climbers or not.

Enjoy. And do salute Marc Leclerc for everything he was. Here it is, in the Avalon Library:

Watched that Bill and thoroughly enjoyed it. His composure was absolutely incredible, not to mention his physical strength and the speed in which he could get up and back down those climbs. Such a lovely young lad with a hint of the philosopher about him too. A sad but inevitable ending perhaps, when a person drives themselves so close to the very edge time and time again.
In the end, it appears that something beyond his control took him and his friend Ryan Johnson. God bless to the spirits of both.

I thought I might add this, an interesting 3 minute addendum — about the almost total lack of Marc Leclerc's ego. He was the best climber of this century, a more skilled and even more daring all-round climber than Alex Honnold, who is now a media celebrity.

But for years Marc was virtually unknown, climbing only for himself (and his girlfriend) and never for popularity, money, followers or fame. Some of the world's best had never even heard of him. There are many people, climbers or not, who might learn something from the example he set, simply by being absolutely true to himself.

What is so absolutely cool about his reasoning in allowing himself to be filmed is that he realized he had others share their experiences when he was a boy. Experiences shared in magazines that allowed helped him to create a vision of becoming an alpinist and he wanted to pass that on. To share his experience to encourage others.

Really, really looking forward to watching the film tonight.

I am not sure why I'm drawn to films such as these; as I am terribly in fear of heights [and heavy risks]. It seems these men and women bring some of the best qualities of humanity into such an exploration endeavour - it has me on the edge of my seat every time.

It is not just the literal success of the summit [achieving great heights]; but the steadyness of mindset that prevails. Given the inherent risks involved, one wonders if these men and women should 'quit while they are ahead' at some point in their climbing careers. But I imagine the draw to the roof of the world is so intense, and their skills are sharp they do not think too much of the risks and focus intently on 'the task at hand' and literally so.

These are the gems of PA that keep me coming back for more.
