This episode was recorded today, February 5th, 2022.

Dr. Julie Ponesse has a PhD in Philosophy (Western, 2008) with areas of specialization in ethics and ancient philosophy. She has a Masters in Philosophy with Collaborative Specialization in Bioethics from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Ethics from the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. Dr. Ponesse has published in the areas of ancient philosophy, ethical theory, and applied ethics, and has taught at universities in Canada and the US for 20 years.

In the fall of 2021, Dr. Ponesse saw her academic career of 20 years fall apart after she refused to comply with a Canadian university's COVID vaccine mandate. In response, Dr. Ponesse recorded a special video directed to her first-year ethics students. That video went viral.

Since the release of that video, Dr. Ponesse has joined The Democracy Fund as the Pandemic Ethics Scholar focussing on educating the public on civil liberties.

I can't make it to Ottawa but I did go out to the Toronto protest.

I ordered a bunch of stickers from Alex Jones a while back for just such an occasion.

I spent the afternoon walking around the protest site, in front of Ontario Parliament, Queen's Park, handing out AJ stickers like: "Arrest Bill Gates"; "Masks are for slaves and criminals"; "Freedom lives"; "Fake news media is the virus"; etc.

It was cold but sunny. Maybe a few thousand gathered. With cars going round and round honking their horns. Lots of Canada flags. Lots of patriots - while I thought Canada had long ago lost its pride in itself. I almost feel like this could still be my country again.

If only we could get hold of our immigration policies before all that is left here are Muslims and Chinese and every type of POC (person of colour, as racist a term as one can invent). By the way...POC gathers together every colour of skin (super racist)...except white (ultimate racism)!

So sad it came to this, in the early 70’s we moved to Toronto from UK. Great jobs, good lifestyle, but there was a special place to buy alcohol, no drinking in public, you were allowed… We didn’t do ‘allowed’, even though things relaxed, so we left to go back to UK via USA and Mexico. In those days it was Mexico on $5 and $10 a day budget. Had a great time, was pregnant, flew home to UK. History. Canada was weird, Mennonites, flat lands with virtually no history or architecture, made us appreciate UK landscape. Mennonites were wonderful, original tribal history brilliant - sadly, the original Pierre Trudeau et al trashed it, so glad we ‘escaped’ to another grand ongoing fiasco here…

Children from two high schools walked out to join the protest in Drayton and were told they would be suspended if they did so. Also, one science teacher said their grades would be docked 25% if they walked out. Another example of the degradation in schools today. The children are well spoken, more informed and seemingly more educated than some that are tasked with their education.

I'm seeing a pretty significant logistics problem of insufficient diesel fuel locally available in the not so distant future for the large number of trucks amassed in the fairly small area that is Ottawa and surroundings. They will need that fuel to keep their engines idling to provide heat to their cabs to sleep in them in cold Canadian winter weather well into spring. However, the Canadian government will be able to wait them out, particularly if there is a real or imagined or manufactured Sword of Damocle$ hanging over them, and forcing it. If they leave to refuel, they probably won't be allowed back. If locals offer the use of their homes or apartments to sleep in, the trucks could be declared abandoned, and then confiscated and auctioned off.

Anyway, just some stuff to think about.

Canadian capital declares state of emergency over Freedom Convoy

Ottawa mayor calls emergency due to ongoing anti-Covid mandate protests

Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has declared a state of emergency, citing “serious danger and threat to the safety and security of residents,” as Freedom Convoy truckers and their pedestrian supporters continue to occupy the capital. The move comes after Watson lamented earlier on Sunday that police have been outnumbered by the demonstrators, and indicated he wants the federal government to help squash the protest.

“The situation at this point is completely out of control because the individuals with the protest are calling the shots,” Watson told Newstalk radio. “They have far more people than we have police officers and I've indicated to the chief that we have to be much more nimble and proactive when it comes to these activities.”

Before announcing the emergency, Watson pleaded with the federal government to “sit down and have some kind of a discussion, some kind of mediation to get this situation resolved because it’s now spreading across the country.”

Watson’s statements echoed an admission from Police Chief Peter Sloly on Saturday. “We do not have sufficient resources to adequately and effectively address this situation while adequately and effectively providing policing in this city,” the top cop said during a meeting with the Ottawa Police Services Board. Referring to the demonstration as a “siege,” he insisted it was “something that is different in our democracy than something I’ve ever experienced in my life.”



While Sloly has repeatedly claimed “all options are on the table,” PM Justin Trudeau last week ruled out deploying the military, acknowledging that such a response should be a matter of last resort. The protesters have promised to hold the line until the government repeals its vaccination mandates and QR code “health passports.”

Some 5,000 people and 1,000 vehicles descended on downtown Ottawa on Saturday, joining the multitudes already present on the tenth day of the ongoing demonstration. A smaller counter-protest took place at City Hall.

Police boasted that 450 tickets had been issued in the “red zone” around Parliament Hill since Saturday morning, though most were for minor infractions such as obstructed license plates, seatbelt violations, fireworks or cell phone usage. The Ottawa Police Service is also investigating alleged threats to public officials and a whopping 200 calls to its hate crime hotline, though they didn’t reveal the target of the “hate.”

The protesters have largely refrained from violence and property damage, though that hasn’t stopped Sloly and other opponents of the convoy from invoking the supposed “insurrection” Capitol riot of January 6th. Authorities have placed heavy barricades at key crossing points throughout downtown and closed roads in an effort to keep out the endless parade of trucks.

Attempts to divert trucks to the Ottawa Baseball Stadium to keep them out of downtown appear to have backfired, with the stadium turning into a “staging area” for the demonstrators with saunas and reportedly even bouncy castles for protesters’ children along with a refueling station and other supplies.

Organizers have indicated they plan to stay in Ottawa for the “long haul,” seeking donations from supporters to cover the costs of fuel, food and lodging. After fundraising platform GoFundMe froze $7 million in donations, they regrouped on Christian competitor GiveSendGo, overloading the platform’s servers as supporters rushed to pledge their money once more.

While Ontario has refused to budge regarding its Covid-19 restrictions, the provinces of Quebec and Saskatchewan have already rolled back some of their stricter measures, while Alberta announced a vote to lift the mandates will be held this week.
