Bob Moran is a British political cartoonist and illustrator who was recently fired by his employer, The Daily Telegraph. In this interview, Moran talks about the role of a political cartoonist, and the moral questions raised by the global response to COVID-19.

Bob Moran is a multi-award winning British illustrator and cartoonist. His work deals with themes such as politics, ethics and family. He uses emotion to convey important messages, defend moral principles, and invite people to think about what really matters in life. Between 2011 and 2021, Bob was a political cartoonist for The Daily Telegraph. During this period he established himself as one of the most esteemed and popular satirists in the UK. His beautiful artwork and sharp commentary have earned him international fame and numerous awards from organizations such as The Foreign Press Association and The Cartoon Arts Trust.

In 2020, as the coronavirus crisis unfolded, Moran took a firm stance against all government measures and restrictions. He thought what happened was immoral, illegal and unnecessary. Through his cartoons, he asked people to think about the inevitable consequences of the way governments around the world behaved. In particular, he tried to draw attention to the horrific consequences for children and the future society that is being created for them.

Moran is often told by critics that as a 'simple cartoonist' he is not allowed to contribute to the corona debate. His opinion is not relevant, people think, only the opinions of scientists and doctors actually matter. But Moran believes that the corona crisis goes much further than science, medicine or statistics alone. The corona crisis is all-encompassing, Moran explains. These are the big questions about humanity. Who we are, where we are going and what is the point of life. “Every person on the planet is entitled to an opinion on this…” Moran says “…the only qualification you need is to live.”

Moran, who takes part in the corona debate on Twitter on the cutting edge, was fired by The Daily Telegraph in October 2021 over Twitter posts he made about a doctor. Moran encouraged his followers to verbally assault a palliative care doctor who posted about wearing masks on public transport to stop the spread of Covid-19. Moran was widely criticized for his statement and then tweeted a lengthy statement that included the following:

“I want to make it clear that I did not target Dr Clarke in any capacity as a journalist or as an employee of Telegraph Media Group. I targeted her in my capacity as a desperate and angry father of a disabled child," Moran said of the impact the Covid-19 lockdown had on his family. He added: “I may have gone too far in this instance. I may have violated Twitter's terms. I may have broken the rules of civilized debate. But I have not broken my promise to my little girl [to stand up for her].”
