How is it outside of the UK?
I live in the most detached part of the US possible, for almost 3 decades now Loudoun county (a subset of a state) has been ranked as the "richest" in the US Loudoun and Fairfax counties (I've been in Fairfax for the last 2 years or so, it has unique properties that stop it from being #1 richest county... for obvious reasons) are about 30 min (Fairfax) or 90 min (Loudoun) drive south of DC and home to the majority of the Intelligence agencies and those who do the work for them (northern Virginia).

in my area nothing has seemed to change, a 900ish sqft town house is selling for roughly 750,000usd as of last month (I highly expect those high prices to fall, and that was the "top end" town house, some of them drift as low as 550,000 USD, which is still ridiculous in my mind when you have zero land, no yard; maybe a porch.)

suffice it to say, I think it's important to note (and investigate the causation of) those areas that seem to be thriving and those that seem to be struggling, and what influence causes that... I find it fascinating that what I just detailed above is not commonly known and extremely disturbing to most people.
Hard times create strong men, Strong men create good times, Good times create weak men, Weak men create hard times.
    Where are you?

Propane carb! That is such a great idea, and so versatile. May I ask you the specifics on how you did it? Any online guide or pure personal handyness? Myself I know my way around carburetors a bit, from messing with my car and bike, so I'm definetly daring to go for it as soon as i have the chance. One of the reasons I havent got a generator yet is the storage of gas.

I'm afraid our convo is slowly deviating from the lines of this thread (although it relates to prepping for what is discussed here, so I guess its fine ^^)
I started this thread -and that's makes this forum so great! ideas concepts and opinions, so it's fine by me

This home energy costs thread (which is quite important, and may well become even more so) really was rather sliding off-topic, and so I moved 8 posts to this new thread:
No criticism is aimed at anyone at all. This is simply why we have a whole bunch of different categories.

Every home should have a politician installed ...they're usually full of hot air.

No. They won't live up to their guarantee...it wouldn't be long before they screw up (for all we know, due to all that hot air) and a new one would have to be installed. Hassle. I'd settle for Larry the cat, or even my own dear moggy to keep me warm and cosy this winter.

Yes, but just like kerosene heaters, politicians produce toxic gases that can make you sick. They should be avoided at all costs.

How has everyone been finding it over the winter? I was recently looking into renting a property but pulled out a day before signing the lease due to predicted energy costs. All of the energy quotes in the UK are too wishy-washy as it is and only predicted to rise in April. It seems with looming mortgage rates increasing even homeowners are struggling just as much.

I suspect squeezing will continue in lockstep with the NWO agenda well into 2024 until the worse hit people are "rescued" by UBI.

Thanks for asking; I'm sorry that you had to pull out of the rental. For my part, I have heating oil so that is paid for but back in the summer when I ordered it, it was a 61% increase per litre on the previous year. That was a much bigger outlay that I struggled to pay and had to cut back on a lot of other things. I'm saving as much as I can now towards next year's oil consignment and I'm thinking of getting half in the spring and the rest in late summer - if there still is oil to be had.

Thank you. That's a good idea - I may check into that myself. I remember someone I knew a few years back used oil radiators and I was quite surprised at how quick they would head up and how long they would stay hot once unplugged. This was around 2017 though so I never gave it a second thought. I think I'll also keep an eye out and see if I can go down that road. Hopefully the price does drop towards summer then I will be a bit more prepared for next winter.

Just to clarify - it's my central heating system, for heating and water, that is powered by heating oil (kerosene) and that is stored in a 1000 litre capacity tank. I think you may be thinking of an oil-filled radiator, I do have one of those but it is a closed system that doesn't need refilling and it needs to be plugged into a socket. It really blasts out heat though!

If I had the means I'd go as off-grid as possible with solar panels on my south-facing roof, but I can't afford that.

Smile Re: Upcoming cost of home energy bills

I'm currently studying/researching at home, having a day off from Uni. My house heating is off as the bills are just becoming unaffordable. Also, I'm wearing a weighted blanket over my shoulders just to keep warmish, albeit, trying not to switch my gas heating on to keep cost down with the household utility cost etc.

Thought I'd take a break and look what's happening today on social media.

Read this tweet below- felt totally p***ed off

Oil and gas giant Shell has reported record annual profits after energy prices surged last year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Profits hit $39.9bn (£32.2bn) in 2022, double last year's total and the highest in its 115-year history.
    -Just Obscene IMO

    Rant over...

Thought it'd be a fine opportunity to catch up and ask how everyone's on here is coping so far with their household energy cost?
