Default This Woman Is Remarkable! (The most beautiful self-built underground home)

This woman builds this impressive semi-underground home with basically a machete and little else. It's absolutely amazing. I've never seen anything like it. About 20 mins long:

Mods/Bill: I have no idea where to put this, so I just put it in general. Feel free to move wherever you feel is appropriate.

    From Bill:

Many thanks — I moved it to Shelter (Living off the Grid), as what feels like the best category. But it can easily be moved again.
I also added more to the thread title, as in the future it's a lot easier to search for threads one remembers if the title contains a few useful key words.

The quality of the ground she is working with is very interesting, I have never seen such a readily workable type of clay/soil which enables you to shape structures like this, I think I saw another video of a man working with exactly the same type of ground, he built an elaborate underground structure in a couple of days, in a similar fashion using a few basic tools-it is a specific location that allows them to work in this way: you could not for example build such a structure here in Perth, because the surrounding soil and earth is mostly sand, impossible to hold a definite shape like she is doing. I am not belittling this lady's achievement, it is remarkable and has great merit, I am simply saying the specific nature of the geology in that location allows for such building, it is unique to the area.

Hi Mike and yes she is Remarkable but I think this skill is more commonplace in her world.
There are many videos showing men and or women building incredible dwellings, on the ground, under and or up trees.

That soil is perfect for her kind of building technique, it's virtually carvable and self supporting.

Add to that her use of Bamboos and twines, we can learn a lot from her.
Not to mention her machine like energies, so fit

Yes very cool indeed. It's not for me to criticize at all, I possess none of these skills, but she missed something. From watching a number of survivalist shows there's a common rookie mistake: no chimney. I couldn't see one here. Without a chimney hole to expel smoke you're going to get smoked out really quickly, and that can in fact be fatal. Beyond that, remarkable achievement.

Her technique is impressive. I've seen others doing more or less the same, in Borneo there is one guy, he builds underground structures like swimming pools and other structures, quite amazing, I have been watching his channel for quite a while now.

I'm thinking the first really serious rain storm/flood and those structures would be swept away or at least gravely damaged, beautiful work, but not intended for longevity!

I was wondering the same thing lol. Apparently building during the dry season. I wanted to see what the monsoon rains woulda done before the roof was on. Not sure what the colored "paint" exactly is. I guess it is somewhat of a sealant to keep the clay from getting on your clothes and maybe somewhat waterproof. But im sure there is a way to apply a really good waterproof sealant even if it requires one item from a hardware store lol. I was wondering if there is some way to sort of petrify the walls and interior furniture for longevity.

I certainly wouldnt do all that work for a seasonal shelter. pffff.

Imagine how fun it would be to live in an Avalon village, where we all worked together to build a village. We would literally be getting ideas from our dreams and all kinds of unexpected evolutions of creativity. A link to the internet as well to borrow from others. Just think how much info and videos 100 of us digest per day. haha If we turned all of that attention toward survivalism, working with nature, and other practical pragmatic endeavors. I know I would feel more fulfilled and alive than what im doing now.

Merkaba and Mike, no need to say I was thinking the very same thing haha
I don't know if she and he in the videos were doing it for presentational/promotional material, since they built a lot of structures not for live in.. I guess they are just showing off how one can build such an amazing thing using their bare hands and just a few basic tools.
I saw a Cob house built approx. 30 years ago in central Thailand, it was unattended my in-law said but it survived 2 major floods he said, other brick houses in the area got cracks in the wall, compromised foundation and many issues, the little Cob house is there resisting the time, it is amazing how strong straw and mud can be when combined.

Sure if they want to live in such amazing thing, a lot more details should have been taken into consideration, the first one is to know if the building is in the water path, also dig some sort of trench around the building to avoid flood, divert the curse of water, etc.. also a good impermeable roof, plastering the walls then one can seal it against water, many many details, but I think it is doable to live in one after taking care of all the details and of course maintaining it along the years.

Sort of related. This is more of a shelter than a home, but a remarkably snug one given the extreme conditions.
