Lightbulb Kinetic Sculpture and Kinetic Spirals

Watch the newest short video in our series Inside the Sculptor’s Studio, which explores the design and fabrication methodologies of four accomplished kinetic sculptors! The video was produced by gallery owners Brigitte Micmacker and John Denning and edited by Scott Saraceno. In addition to the video, the kinetic sculpture exhibition "Kinetic Sculpture in 4 Movements" runs from May 4, 2017 - August 4, 2017 at Sculpturesite Gallery in Glen Ellen and nearby wineries in Sonoma and Kenwood. See exciting and mesmerizing work from Pennsylvania artist Jeff Kahn, California artists Jeffery Laudenslager and John Tyler, and Washington artist Troy Pillow, all powered entirely by wind!

*Correction May 1, 2017: At 2:06, a graphic in the video incorrectly wrote the formula for the golden ratio. It should be B/A = A/(A+B). We regret the error. John Edmark's sculptures are both mesmerizing and mathematical. Using meticulously crafted platforms, patterns, and layers, Edmark's art explores the seemingly magical properties that are present in spiral geometries. In his most recent body of work, Edmark creates a series of animating “blooms” that endlessly unfold and animate as they spin beneath a strobe light.

A self-taught artist with a background in physics, David C. Roy has been creating mesmerizing wooden kinetic sculptures for nearly 40 years. Powered solely through mechanical wind-up mechanisms, pieces can run up to 48 hours on a single wind.

These seven kinetic sculptures are more than just what you’re used to seeing in a museum. They move, or require you to move, for viewers to really understand what they’re looking at. From the Statue of Franz Kafka in Prague to the Kinetic Rain installation in Singapore's Changi Airport, each of these sculptures plays with our perception and tricks our eyes into seeing something totally new.

    • If I ever would invite (new) benevolent E.T.'s to visit Earth ... I would chose Eco-Villages having Kinetic Art displayed all over the place with buildings based upon (inspired by) Antoni Gaudí Cornet organic (golden mean ratio) architecture showing several different acoustic Cymatics experiments.
    cheers,
