Well, we need to know the scale. The rock at the left of the image looks (to me) that it might be quite small. The strata of the all the visible rocks (and the crack to the left of the image) also suggests that.

And if it's taken by the Mastcam of the Curiosity Rover, it seems that it may be quite near the vehicle. Maybe an examination of the images that border this one (left, right, up, down) would shed light on how large or small this is.

I was goggle-eyed at first but after zooming right in it seems like there's solid, natural rock at the back - a v-speed little cave. I'm not going to absolutely conclude that's what it is but that's what I'm seeing.

The most impressive thing about this "door" is not the opening itself, but the deep cut into the rock just to the left of the door, and the level ground in front of it.

On the outside the layering of beds running diagonally from upper right to lower left at at inclination roughly 10deg slope (assuming that's what we're seeing, arm chair geology is not precise science at all!), should extend right throughout the plane of deposition of those beds. i.e. a plane that cuts directly through the point of view forwards and slightly sloping downward and tilting left.... for that deposition plane to be intercepted by something not very far below the surface kind of contradicts what we understand by sedimentary geology unless it is later intruded by rising volcanic lava. However mars is long thought to be techtonically dead, though I did see in a recent post on Onawah's magnetic reversal post that the Suspicious Observer channel video mentioned something about a detected earthquake on Mars so maybe not as dormant as we thought?

Intuitively it looks a little artificial in my slightly rusty geological experience. Which makes it hard to reconcile that NASA is willingly and knowingly releasing this publicly.. the URL is legit US. gov site right? Well it's very very open to speculation and all manner of wild theories because of the ambiguity about it all.. like Bill mentioned with scale for one thing. Also a narrow shot so apart from that feature, bedding planes and massive cleavage fracture running vertically on the left hand side of picture we can't view more of the general area... so yeah again we get back to doing arm chair geology and making massive leaps in assumption.. which might be the what the intent was when releasing this picture.. (case and point - my cynicism going into overdrive now )

I have seen photos of the Moon with large humans standing next to framed doorways which apparently open into hillsides underground. This was the photo showing trees on the moon with UFO over the trees. Also saw pictures of Mars with same arrangement of doorways in the sides of rolling hills. The first one was brushed out by Nassa but an original survived.

    Perfect, thanks.

Here's a screenshot of the image (go to Adi's link above for the high-resolution zoom-in version), with the location of the "doorway" in the center of the yellow circle that I added.

It seems clear to me that (a) many of the the rocks all around have rectangular fractures and cleavages, and (b) it's very small, as I'd suspected. None of this landscape is very far from the camera.

After seeing the rodent on the Curiosity 'virtual mars tour' set of images, I'm not convinced all the Curiosity images are from Mars, some of them could be from Devon island where the rover was tested.

2 curious things on this Gigapan:

On the left, none of those objects look natural, in fact they look like the back end of transportation trucks that haven't finished sinking in the soil...

My intuition is that it is 97.5% a genuine man-made entrance to a cave. A door is a door and a face is a face.

Well it looks as if the mainstream media has got wind of it. Sky News has an article (follow the link) wherein an explanation is provided that what is seen is not a doorway'', rather is the subject of a geological process or cause, i.e., it is not artificial. The old adage applies: 'do your own research' : https://news.sky.com/story/nasa-pict...-made-12611936
