Amid farm woes, tractors may shortly leave the fields for protest sites

The tractor has emerged as an icon of farmers’ protests. It became an emblem during the year-long farmers’ demonstration, when they laid a siege around the national capital. Now, a call from a farmer leader to keep “tractors ready” has given rise to renewed speculation.

“Yes, I did ask (peasants) to keep their tractors ready since one doesn’t know where one needs to go now. However, a tractor is needed on the fields…or any other place…,” said Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait in his characteristic style.

He also called out the Centre for not meeting their demands. He was on the way to Hisar in Haryana where, according to reports, a farmer died and three policemen were injured in a clash on Friday. The farmers have been protesting near the Rajiv Gandhi Thermal Power Project, Khedar, for the past several weeks. They are demanding that fly ash from the plant be given to them as earlier and not through auction.

    Farmers blame govt

“The movement will go on. Farmers’ expenses are going up. Unemployment is getting worse. The government doesn’t want to address these issues. They refuse to sit down for a discussion,” Tikait complained.

Among their demands is legalisation of minimum support price (MSP) through legislation. This, they say, was sought to ensure that farmers got paid as announced by the government at the beginning of every sowing season. “The MSP issue is not being addressed. We are not getting the right price (in the market). Electricity is becoming expensive,” he added.

“The government has reneged on its promises,” reiterated Hannan Mollah, general secretary of All-India Kisan Sabha (AIKS). “They (the Centre) had committed in writing that a committee will be set up on MSP, still there is no sign of it.”

Govt puts the ball in farmers’ court

The government had also announced it is ready to form an MSP panel and asked farm leaders to name their members. But the latter refused, saying the government’s “intent was not clear”.

In this context, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had announced in Parliament that the government would form a committee as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021 as soon as they received names of representatives from SKM.

When this was mentioned, Hannan Mollah claimed that they will soon issue a letter urging the government “not to mislead people”. “Such a committee cannot be constituted over a telephone call. We have written to the Centre – once in March, again in April – asking for the terms of reference of the committee, requesting to make it time bound and seeking other details. There has been no response…,” alleged the septuagenarian Marxist leader.

In June, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved an increase in MSP for all mandated kharif crops for marketing season 2022-23. However, protestors claim that even with MSP of common grade paddy at Rs 2,040 per quintal, it barely meets input cost. Hannan Mollah claimed that it is about Rs 250 less than what a grower spends per quintal.

When pointed out that there were reports of wheat being procured by private players above MSP, both farm leaders claimed ignorance.

    Less govt procurement

According to official figures, till July 3 this year, 187.89 LMT (lakh metric tonnes) of wheat has been procured. This benefited about 17.85 lakh farmers with an MSP value of Rs 37,859.34 crore, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution said in a statement.

Whereas, according to the ministry, last year even till June 6, over 416.44 LMT of wheat was procured. This, the statement added, was an all-time high, “as it has exceeded previous high 389.92 LMT (of RMS 2020-21) against the last year corresponding purchase of 371.33 LMT. About 45.56 lakh farmers have already been benefitted from the ongoing RMS procurement operations with MSP value of Rs 82,247.51 crore”.

Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), said that due to higher market prices this year, large quantities of wheat were being bought by traders outside mandis at a higher rate than MSP.

“This year, due to an increase in market prices and higher demand by the private players, both for the domestic as well as export purposes, the purchase by the government agency is less. But that goes in favour of the farmers. Farmers are getting a good price for the wheat,” he explained when asked on lower procurement of wheat.

This is not a regular phenomenon, as some experts pointed out. The reason comes from Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, where many countries were looking at India for importing wheat. Private procurement at higher prices may be due to the export market.

On their demands, farmer unions claim that the agriculture secretary had earlier written to them with an assurance that the government would comply with these.

    Planned protests

A calendar of protests and demonstrations was recently made public.

A ‘Protest Against Betrayal’ is now being organised in 500 districts for legal guarantee of MSP through legislation and on other pending demands and, on July 31, a ‘chakka jam’ will be held across the country. Between August 7 and 14 ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ conventions will be held across the country against the government’s newly introduced Agnipath scheme. Under this scheme, soldiers will be recruited in short service without post-retirement benefits except a corpus fund of Rs. 11.71 lakh.

Beginning August 18, a 75-hour mass dharna will be held at Lakhimpur Kheri demanding the sacking of Ajay Mishra Teni, the SKM added. Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri in October last year. A car mowed down farmers protesting Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to the area. There were reports of gunfire as well. The car allegedly belonged to Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish, who is an accused in the case.

However, the leaders are wary of an aggressive campaign fearing law-and-order problems. Violence may cost them the sympathy they now enjoy. The fracas on the streets of the national capital on January 26, 2021, during a tractor march did not pan out well.

But, as pointed out by Tikait, the tractors are ready to roll out for any place where needed.

These huge ongoing protests have been shamefully absent from much of the US and UK media, but Sky News Australia, fiercely critical of the WEF and all things globalist, continues to do a great job reporting it. Here's a 12 minute news piece from a couple days ago.

Lightbulb Re: Dutch Farmers Fighting Back Against Government's 'Green' Agenda Connected to WEF

    • Dutch 🇳🇱 farmers have called on the world’s blue-collar workers to come together for a Day of International Demonstrations against radical climate policies on July 23.

Dutch farmers call for Day of International Demonstrations In a video that’s gaining traction and going viral, the creators call for “Dutch Lions [to] Rise Up Now” before launching into a compilation of civil rights movements featuring the likes of Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi.

Interspersed throughout the video is footage of Dutch farmers, fishermen, truckers, and general protesters in the Netherlands taking to the streets and blockading highways and distribution centres.

As MLK’s voice plays in the background, the words “Let’s unite, stand up & rise” fades in and out.

Also included in the video are those who’ve protested various destructive climate policies or stood in solidarity with the Dutch in their own countries, including those in France, Italy, Australia, Canada, and the US. Germany and Poland have also been supporting the farmers’ protests.

“Can they really make a difference?” the video asks before showing a reel of successful nonviolent rebellions beginning in 1905.

The Dutch farmers are currently protesting a climate policy that will put a 50% cap on nitrogen and ammonia emissions by 2030. Farmers are the primary targets due to the supposed impact of fertilizer use and livestock. It’s estimated that at least 30% of farmers will be forced out of business and will have to sell their land due to the policy.
The Dutch government knows this and has positioned itself to purchase the land, which is highly dubious, to say the least.

“The honest message … is that not all farmers can continue their business,” a government statement reads.

Many critics of the policy say they’re aware of the government’s real motivations: to force the farmers to sell their land for pennies on the dollar so the government can pave over it, erect new apartment complexes, and bring in hordes of new immigrants.

As Dutch Legal Philosopher Eva Vlaardingerbroek explains while speaking to Fox News’s Tucker Carlson, “What this is about is the Dutch government stealing our farmers’ land, and they’re doing this under the guise of a made-up nitrogen crisis that is basically going to put most of these farmers completely out of business… they’re doing this because they want these want these farmers’ land, and they want it to house new immigrants.”

“They also want it because the farmers are obviously standing in the way of the Great Reset plans that they have for us. Farmers are hardworking, God-fearing, and especially self-sufficient people that are just standing in the way of their globalist agenda.”

Similar policies have ‘spontaneously’ popped up in several other countries, including in Canada, where the government is planning to impose nearly the exact same cuts on nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer specifically but will only enforce a 30% cap rather than a 50% cap.

Still, this cap is more than enough to destroy the lives of thousands of farmers.
The video concludes by calling on supporters of Dutch farmers to come together in peaceful protest on July 23, 2022.

No farmers, no food YEs the equation is very simple - we have these insane WEF types imposing their incorrect, unscientific ideas on us all and it is an absolute disgrace, we cannot stand for this unless we want to become pathetic, passive minions being disrespected, treated with contempt and gross injustice: The Green agenda is absolutely wrong, it is not just a little bit misguided and idealistic it is counter to everything we have learned over the centuries, everything we have gained and produced is now under threat because of these imbecile psychopaths.
Where are the loud voices from science, the angry academic opposition to these ideas, everywhere we just see weak, compliant mediocrities bowing to this onslaught of insanity.
Too much nitrogen in the soil? Have you ever heard such bloody nonsense?
The climate, C02 - utterly ridiculous, these people are to be deposed, banished from our countries, we must fight like we have never fought, every little particle of resistance is valuable, every time we to refuse to comply is a triumph, we shall prevail.

    Australia Ballarat farmers protesting

Tractors take to the streets of Ballarat as farmers protest Western Renewables Link

Hundreds of tractors were driven through the main streets of Ballarat's CBD on Friday as hundreds of farmers protested the proposed Western Renewables Link.

The controversial project would see 500-kilovolt high-voltage transmission lines that could be as high as 85 metres if they were to be installed above the ground.

The lines would transport renewable energy from Bulgana, north of Ararat, to Melbourne.

Ballarat Potato Growers Association chairman Chris Stephens said if people in cities wanted cheap renewable power, it should be in their backyard.

"If people in the city want this power, why does it have to be us who pay the price?" he said.

    'Bring it on'

Hundreds of people attended Friday's rally, with more than 70 tractors blockading Lydiard Street.

Close to 200 vehicles joined a parade that began at Ballarat airport, passed the McCain Foods manufacturing plant, and was then escorted by police through town and down the main street.

Protest organiser and Stop AusNet Towers chair Emma Muir said protests against the project will continue until landholders are brought to the table as stakeholders.

"The support today has been phenomenal," she said.

"We need to sit down at the table and look at this properly. We need to understand the whole process, don't just piecemeal it."

Ms Muir said several state ministers and members of government were invited to attend the protest, as well as Ballarat's federal member and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Catherine King.

"We didn't hear from most of them, and a couple were busy so we're really disappointed," she said.

"I think they're hoping we're just going to go away, but we're here to stay.

"This is the first [transmission line] of so many more, and if they don't get this project right it's going to keep happening all across Victoria."

The protest follows on from March's tractor rally in front of Parliament House in Melbourne.

"We'll ramp up even more now. It makes us all feel good to come together as a community," she said.

"We need to do stuff like this to make sure we're heard. And there is a state election coming up. Bring it on."

In a statement, Ms King said she fully supported the right of the community to protest against this "bad project".

"Like everybody I am incredibly frustrated by the failure of AusNet to listen to our communities," she said.

"I will be making a formal submission to the state government's EES process to outline my concerns in the strongest possible terms and call for the route to be changed."

An AusNet spokesperson said the company understood the concerns and uncertainty a project of this size can create for local communities and families.

"We are continuing to engage and consult with communities and landholders," the spokesperson said.

"The existing transmission network in western Victoria is at capacity.

"The Western Renewables Link is critical transmission infrastructure which will allow new renewables projects, like wind and solar, to power half a million Victorian homes as we move away from coal-generated electricity in the coming years."

Ausnet Services has also released the proposed route for high-voltage power lines for the Gippsland Renewable Energy Zone in the state's east, but has not said whether they will be built underground.

In Gippsland there are plans for a series of renewable energy projects including offshore wind and several solar farms.

If approved, the transmission lines would run from Giffard following a route south of Rosedale and Traralgon, before connecting with existing infrastructure in the Latrobe Valley.

About 48 properties would be affected.

An Ausnet spokesperson said the proposed route would have "the least amount of impacts to landowners, biodiversity, and cultural heritage".

If constructed overhead, the project will likely include steel towers and poles up to 80 metres high which would sit on an easement between 70 and 110 metres wide.

    • There Is A 'Deafening Media Silence' On Global Protests:

There is a "deafening" media silence on protests around the world protesting against the elites, according to Webster University Assistant Professor Ralph Schoellhammer. "They are significant protests – we're talking about 30,000+ people in The Netherlands 🇳🇱 " Prof Schoellhammer said. Prof Schoellhammer said the media and political campaign across the west against "disinformation" is part of a broader attempt to "undermine" organised protests against the agenda of the elites. "That the best way to prevent the pushback from large numbers of people is if they don't know that anything is going on," he said. "Think about the situation of the truckers in Canada when they pulled their bank accounts ... so this is undermining the possibility of those people to organise. "It's what interest groups, what these players do – they see there is something coming that could be a threat to their power so they try to do something to undermine it."

Lightbulb Re: Dutch Farmers Fighting Back Against Government's 'Green' Agenda Connected to WEF

    • A Popular Uprising Against the Elites Has Gone Global
A popular uprising of working-class people against the elites and their values is underway—and it's crossing the globe. There is a growing resistance by the middle and lower classes against what Rob Henderson has coined the "luxury beliefs" of the elites, as everyday folks realize the harm it causes them and their communities.
There were early glimmerings last February, when the Canadian Trucker Convoy pitched working class truck drivers against a "laptop class" demanding ever more restrictive COVID-19 policies. You saw it as well in the victory of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who ran on parents' rights in education and went on to win both suburbs and rural areas. You can see it in the growing support of Hispanic voters for a Republican Party, which increasingly identifies as anti-woke, and pro-working class. And now we're seeing the latest iteration in the Netherlands in the form of a farmer's protest against new environmental rulings that will ruin them.

Over 30,000 Dutch 🇳🇱 farmers have risen in protest against the government in the wake of new nitrogen limits that require farmers to radically curb their nitrogen emissions by up to 70 percent in the next eight years. It would require farmers to use less fertilizer and even to reduce the number of their livestock. While large farming companies have the means to hypothetically meet these goals and can switch to non-nitrogen-based fertilizers, it is impossible for smaller, often family-owned farms. The new environmental regulations are so extreme that they would force many to shutter, including people whose families have been farming for three or four generations. In protest, farmers have been blockading streets and refusing to deliver their products to supermarket chains. It's been leading to serious shortages of eggs and milk, among other food items.

But the effects will be global. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 is the world's second largest agricultural exporter after the United States, making the country of barely 17 million inhabitants a food superpower. Given global food shortages and rising prices, the role of Dutch farmers in the global food chain has never been more important. But if you thought the Dutch government was going to take that into account and ensure that people can put food on the table, you would be wrong; when offered the choice between food security and acting against "climate change," the Dutch government decided to pursue the latter.

What is particularly frustrating is that the government is fully aware that what it is asking farmers to do will drive many of them out of existence. In fact, the government originally planned to move at a slower pace—until a lawsuit brought by environmental groups in 2019 forced an acceleration of the timetable.

The reaction by members of the agricultural sector has been massive and ongoing since 2019, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic allowed the government of Prime Minister Mark Rutte to ban protests in 2020 and 2021. With the reignited demonstrations this year, the authorities have also switched to a more aggressive approach. There have been arrests and even warning shots fired by police at farmers, one almost killing a 16-year-old protestor.

Yet the sympathies of the Dutch are not with their government; they are solidly with their farmers. Current polls indicate that the Farmers Political Party, formed just three years ago in response to the new regulations, would gain a whopping 11 seats in Parliament if elections were held today (it currently holds just one seat). Moreover, the Dutch Fishermen's Union has publicly joined the protests, blocking harbors with fishing crews holding signs that read "Eendracht maakt Kracht": Unity Creates Strength.

But while the Dutch people are on the side of the farmers, their elites are behaving much as they did in Canada and the U.S., and not just those in government. Media outlets are refusing to even report the protests, and when they do, they cast the farmers as extremists.

Why the disconnect? Every reliable poll of European newsrooms from Germany to the Netherlands show that climate change is a much more important topic for journalists than it is for ordinary people. It's not that average citizens don't care about climate change, but that they have the common sense to know that destroying their farm so the government's emission goals can be met in 2030 instead of 2035 will not change the planet's climate.

Farmers gather with their vehicles next to a Germany/Netherlands border sign during a protest on the A1 highway, near Rijssen, on June 29, 2022, against the Dutch Government's nitrogen plans.

After all, the Netherlands 🇳🇱 accounts for just 0.46 percent of the world's CO2 emissions, and while a further reduction might be desirable, it will not be decisive in combating climate change over the next eight years. It may make the country's elite to feel good about themselves, but it will also result in large parts of the population seeing their living standards decline and their economic existence targeted by the state for ideological reasons.

There is a malaise in the West currently, where ideological goals are pursued at the expense of the lower middle and working classes. Whether it's truckers in Canada, farmers in the Netherlands, oil and gas companies in the United States, ideology, not science or hard evidence, is dominating the agenda, gratifying the elites while immiserating the working class.

Ultimately, there is a risk that climate policies will do to Europe what Marxism did to Latin America. A continent with all the conditions for widespread prosperity and a healthy environment will impoverish and ruin itself for ideological reasons.
In the end, both the people and the climate will be worse off.

Ralph Schoellhammer is an assistant professor in economics and political science at Webster University Vienna.
