    Default Turmoil in Sri Lanka

I just heard about this, - what happened in Sri Lanka. I knew it was hot, but I didn't twig how hot. Sri Lanka got so sick of everything they burned down politician's houses.

Why Mobs Are Torching Sri Lanka Politicians’ Homes
A combination of Covid, energy price hikes and government-mandated organic farming brought a popular tourist spot to the brink of chaos.

Sri Lanka is back in the news—for all the wrong reasons. On Monday besieged Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned after weeks of protests, amid a cratering economy and violent clashes between government supporters and antigovernment protesters in the capital, Colombo.

At least eight people have died in the violence, and some 200 were injured. Rampaging mobs torched more than 50 houses, including the ancestral home of the Rajapaksa clan, a family that has dominated Sri Lankan politics for nearly two decades. Rioters have set up roadblocks on the way to the airport to prevent politicians from fleeing the country.

    And reported by CNN:
Sri Lanka protesters burn politicians' homes as country plunges further into chaos

Colombo, Sri Lanka (CNN)Protesters in Sri Lanka have burned down homes belonging to 38 politicians as the crisis-hit country plunged further into chaos, with the government ordering troops to "shoot on sight."

Police in the island nation said Tuesday that in addition to the destroyed homes, 75 others have been damaged as angry Sri Lankans continue to defy a nationwide curfew to protest against what they say is the government's mishandling of the country's worst economic crisis since 1948.
The Ministry of Defense on Tuesday ordered troops to shoot anyone found damaging state property or assaulting officials, after violence left at least nine people dead since Monday; it is unclear if all of the deaths were directly related to the protests. More than 200 people have been injured.

Yes, and this is ongoing. Those excellent reports you posted were dated over 3 weeks ago. Here's a 4 June update from Time:
I'll not copy the article here, but it's interesting and pertinent, and the title is What the Crisis in Sri Lanka Means for the World. It states exactly what I was about to post in reply anyway: that this is a harbinger, an early warning of things to come elsewhere.

Sri Lanka’s Economy Has 'Completely Collapsed': PM

[extract from the article, which mentions that Sri Lanka is seeking help from China, India, the US and Australia.]

Sri Lanka’s prime minister is increasing efforts to revive the country’s “completely collapsed” economy amid a lack of foreign exchange reserves and severe shortages of essential items.
“We are now facing a far more serious situation beyond the mere shortages of fuel, gas, electricity, and food. Our economy has faced a complete collapse,” Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament on June 22.

re bolded... at the end of the day this could be the only thing that will stop them... all the corrupt traitorous politicians where-ever they may be...

can you imagine what would happen if an unarmed protester - a female unarmed protester was shot dead by a government agent during this protest (see below video) - like what happened to Ashli Babbitt on 6th Jan 2021 at the Capitol Building... they would probably destroy the building brick by brick - until it was just rubble...

Green Dogma Behind Fall Of Sri Lanka

Organic farm advocates said they wanted what's best for the 22 million people of the island nation off the coast of India. What went wrong?

Police use water canon to disperse farmers taking part in an anti-government protest demanding the resignation of Sri Lanka's President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on July 6, 2022. (Photo by AFP) (Getty Images)

Sri Lanka has fallen. Protesters breached the official residences of Sri Lanka's Prime Minister and President, who have fled to undisclosed locations out of fear of death. The proximate reason is that the nation is bankrupt, suffering its worst financial crisis in decades. Millions are struggling to purchase food, medicine and fuel. Energy shortages and inflation were major factors behind the crisis. Inflation in June in Sri Lanka was over 50%. Food prices rose by 80%. And a half-million people fell into poverty over the last year.

But the underlying reason for the fall of Sri Lanka is that its leaders fell under the spell of Western green elites peddling organic agriculture and “ESG,” which refers to investments made following supposedly higher Environmental, Social, and Governance criteria. Sri Lanka has a near-perfect ESG score (98) which is higher than Sweden (96) or the United States (51), notes a commentator.

To be sure, there were other factors behind Sri Lanka’s fall. COVID-19 lockdowns and a 2019 bombing hurt tourism, a $3 billion to 5 billion-per-year industry. Sri Lanka’s leaders insisted on paying China back for various “Belt and Road” infrastructure projects when other nations refused to do so. And higher oil prices meant transportation prices rose 128% since May.

But the biggest and main problem causing Sri Lanka’s fall was its ban on chemical fertilizers in April 2021. Over 90% of Sri Lanka’s farmers had used chemical fertilizers and, after the ban, 85% experienced crop losses. After the fertilizer ban, rice production fell 20% and prices skyrocketed 50 percent in just six months. Sri Lanka had to import $450 million worth of rice despite having been self-sufficient in the grain just months earlier. The price of carrots and tomatoes rose five-fold. Tea, the nation’s main export, also suffered, thereby undermining the nation’s foreign currency and ability to purchase products from abroad.

While there are 2 million farmers in Sri Lanka, 70% of the nation’s 22 million people are directly or indirectly dependent on farming. “We are furious!” said one rice farmer in May. “Angry! Not just me - but all the farmers who cultivated here are angry.”

In November 2021, Sri Lanka tried to reverse course, but it was too late. Rajapaksa said, “we don’t have enough chemical fertilizers in the country because we didn’t import them. There is a shortage.” By the end of last August, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had declared a state of emergency.

What, exactly, were Sri Lanka’s leaders thinking? Why did they engage in such a radical experiment?

Sri Lanka's new President is a Member of the World Economic Forum

Sri Lanka’s new President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is enforcing a QR code digital ID program to access gas, is a devoted Member and Agenda Contributor of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

In fact, Ranil Wickremesinghe spearheaded the green push during his time as Prime Minister that has led to the fuel crisis currently besieging the pockets of Sri Lankans.

In 2016, Wickremesinghe penned an article for the World Economic Forum entitled “The future of Sri Lanka’s economy,” in which he laid out Sri Lanka’s role in reducing global emissions and transitioning away from fossil fuels.

    As per Wickremesinghe’s article:

Sri Lanka’s cultural traditions are such that respect for the environment is embedded in the psyche of our people. This creates a groundswell of public opinion in favour of sustainable development. In the wake of the Paris Climate Conference, I would like to point out that Sri Lanka is committed to achieving 20% renewable energy usage by 2030, over and above the current 35% of hydropower. Environmental sustainability is central to the country’s development plans. At the same time, Sri Lanka is ready to be a constructive partner in global climate negotiations.

Hilariously — or it would be funny if the state of Sri Lanka weren’t so tragic — Wickremesinghe penned another article for the WEF in 2018 in which he boasted of the country’s progress and stated that he would “make my country rich by 2025.”

Due to his strict commitment to environmentalism and ESG standards, Sri Lanka was given a nearly perfect ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) score of 98.1 out of 100 by World Economics, even as signs the country was going bankrupt were as clear as day.

Nonetheless, Sri Lanka, led by leaders more concerned with global virtue signalling rather than the wellbeing of their people, has continued down its current trajectory and is facing fuel, food, and financial crises simultaneously.

As previously reported by The Counter Signal, at the heart of the Sri Lankan crisis is a government policy that banned the use of artificial fertilizer in the country to shift towards organic farming. In April 2021, former president Rajapaksa banned all chemical fertilizers in Sri Lanka, only to reverse the policy soon after.

Initially, Sri Lanka was importing non-harmful Nano Nitrogen liquid fertilizer from India while banning private companies from importing synthetic products.

“The nitrogen content of organic fertilizer is about 3-4%,” said agriculture expert Udith Jayasinghe.

“For paddy cultivation, 80,000 metric tonnes of nitrogen is needed for this season. This cannot be done entirely from compost fertilizer domestically.”

Despite the reversal, the country plunged into systemic shortages of food and other goods. Sri Lanka, a major rice producer, saw a 30% plunge in paddy yields across the country and vegetable prices doubling.

“We are a tropical country full of rice paddies and banana plantations, but because of this stupid fertilizer ban, now we don’t even have enough food to feed ourselves,” former Sri Lankan governor Rajith Keerthi told the Guardian.

“We have had past economic crises, security crises, but never in Sri Lanka’s history have we had a food crisis.”

On top of this is a national fuel crisis that has gotten so bad that heavily armed officers have been deployed to gas stations to deny people with “non-essential vehicles” from purchasing gas at gunpoint.

Now, the government under Ranil Wickremesinghe is implementing a nationwide QR code digital ID as part of a fuel rationing scheme.

It’s not clear how much worse it can get in Sri Lanka, but it’s unlikely that one of the country’s greatest contributors to the crisis has the means (or sincere desire) to get Sri Lanka out of it.

That whole uprising was a takeover.

The former President was linked to China and that same China had many infrastructure projects inside Sri-Lanka.

The protests don't seem odd to most due to the familiarity it emits onto your brain, we're seeing this happening all over the Globe right?
Just take a look at Ravenlockes post above this one and see for yourselves. Is it not very interesting that India chooses to side with Russia and China, but Sri Lanka falls? We'll have to wait and see how it pans out, strategically, yes military, it is actually a brilliant move, hard to write that so. I bet that if someone goes into Sri Lanka's banking system a cause of all the problems might be found inside.

Quote The ongoing meltdown in Colombo has brought about a spectacular change in fortunes for Chinese foreign policy, and it could also have serious implications for Beijing’s presence in the Indian Ocean and for the future potential of its global infrastructure investment plan.

It is also very strange that China seemed to have dropped the ball on this, very un-China like, I wonder if there is something behind it.
