Nasa To Test Spinlaunch's Bizarre 'Whirl 'n' Hurl' Space Launch Technology To Fling Satellites Into Orbit
    • NASA has signed with the California-based firm to test the unique launch system
    • The eccentric technology can accelerate a rocket to beyond the speed of sound
    • Once released the rocket shoots to space to release a payload such as a satellite

    • Video: Watch This Camera Get Launched By Spinlaunch's Suborbital Accelerator At Nearly 2,000kph

SpinLaunch is a space technology company that created a catapult-like approach to sending payloads into space with minimal rocket propellant. SpinLaunch created the world's first kinetic space launch system. Its Suborbital Accelerator has been underdoing testing, and SpinLaunch attached a camera to its test vehicle during its most recent test flight, resulting in incredible footage.

The first test flight was on October 22, 2021, and it launched a test vehicle at supersonic speeds. The reusable test vehicle was safely recovered upon its descent. Additional test flights, such as the eighth test flight seen below, have been performed using different vehicles at varying speeds. Below, a 3m (9.8') long test vehicle was launched at more than 1,600 kph (1,000 mph). SpinLaunch didn't state how high the test vehicle got, but previous tests have launched vehicles to over 9,000m (30,000').

SpinLaunch's Suborbital Accelerator is 50.4m (165') tall. That's a few meters taller than the Statue of Liberty. The structure is designed to operate from 1,287 to 8,047 kph (800-5,000 mph). The test vehicle includes angled fins to induce a rapid spin rate, stabilizing the vehicle during its ascent. Of course, a faster spin rate does make the video a bit more dizzying.

The Suborbital Accelerator is a smaller-scale version of a similar launcher that SpinLaunch intends to build. The larger version would be able to launch 200kg (400 lbs.) payloads into low Earth orbit. Alongside its kinetic launch systems, SpinLaunch is also developing low-cost satellites to launch with its mass accelerators.

SpinLaunch's mass accelerators offer up to a four times reduction in required fuel to reach orbit and a ten times reduction in cost. Plus, the mass accelerator can be used multiple times a day. The first customer launches are planned for 2025. To learn much more about SpinLaunch, its developments and its mission, visit its website.

Good thread. They should have put “Sling” in the name.

The main thing I don’t understand is how the angular momentum of the projectile, about it’s own CG, is handled. I have watched a couple vids (previous to this post) and don’t recall any detail about the innards of the vacuum space, including the projectile’s securement and release hardware.

Unless they have an intricate mechanism that counter-spins the load to keep it pointed in the exact launch direction, the forces to straighten it out would be immense. Too much, seems to me, for a complex ‘rocket’ like they pictured.

If we build a device big enough we could put people up there.

Imagine a MASIVE rail plunger that goes down a mountain into a compression tube (plunger could have additional power that kicks in at right time.
The speed of the craft builds with a continuous additional of compressions.
Until a smooth rate of needed speed is reached.

So not like a gun with an instant speed but a gradual (Gravity feed and assisted) acceleration.
Just a matter of industrial scale and investment
massive plunger/s broken into pieces and taken back up mountain ready for next launch.

Soft bodied payloads like people and fragile equipment could be launched.
Or could at least launch materials etc.

This whole system would be a relative low tech process.

What do you think 0.o ?
It would be some hell of a Air Gun hehe

PS the spin launcher dose look like a very interesting concept

Robert Heinlein had the basic idea well covered in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress - in 1965. Well his idea was a huge catapult rather than spin launcher....

One of if not his greatest work of SF, in my view, recently reread after 45 years or so.

Catapults were used on the Earth and the Moon, to send trade and supplies to and from first and as a Lunar revolution weapon later.

From earth, they were built at the highest flat elevation areas. From the Moon was like throwing rocks downhill by comparison.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mo...Harsh_Mistress

Quote Earth still refuses to recognize Lunar independence, and the revolutionaries deploy their catapult weapon. When Mike launches rocks at sparsely populated locations on Earth, warnings are released to the press detailing the times and locations of the bombings, which deliver kinetic energy equivalent to atomic blasts.

    ...

Earth sends a massive sneak attack to put an end to the rebellion, sending ships in a wide orbit approaching from Luna's far side. The attack destroys Mike's original catapult and takes him offline, but the Loonies have built a secondary, hidden catapult. With Mannie acting as its on-site commander and entering trajectories by hand, the Loonies continue to bombard the dismayed Earth government until it concedes Luna's independence.

    • New Technology Aims To Put A Whole New Spin On Space Travel:

A new form of technology is trying to send items into space with an innovative new method. The SpinLaunch aims to reduce the carbon footprint of space travel by using a vacuum chamber to launch objects. Jeff Glor has more.
