There has been talk of the EU backpedalling on the sanctions when it gets really tough in a month or two, I hope they do, they only people they are punishing are their own people, the poor & the vulnerable much more so.

Fortunately we aren't reliant on Russian gas, and the UK doesn't get anywhere near as cold as Germany in winter despite being further north, but I still think there is the likelihood of the electric going off. Which is why I've bought a generator, and gas bottles. Even a small camping stove to make hot food could make a huge difference if the power goes off.

I think things could get very nasty in cities if it goes dark.

This was the news just before this all kicked off, they must think we have short memories lol https://www.independent.co.uk/climat...-b2010060.html

It reminds me of the movement of Cruise missiles around the UK in the 1980s that Cruisewatch would film. The difference here is that the Cruise missiles were always moved at night, this is an intriguing convoy to be moved in daytime. They're not trying to hide anything.
I agree, they are making a statement.

Although I wonder what the UK stock of ammunition actually is, France said they had enough for three or four days of full on war, we'll have more than that but still ?

I can imagine a possibility of there being some nutters around who believe they can knock out Putin in weeks and turn the gas taps back on themselves.

No one is saying that in relation to beating the Russians, but in relation to the facts that industries will collapse & people will freeze to death.

This possibility intrigues me and thoughts fly around.

IF the US ousts Biden soon ( obviously not in the ballot box but I doubt this autumn's string of events will include an election on schedule anyway ), it's probable that any European leaders who sanctions bust will not get any flack from across the Atlantic, at least. I think many will break sanctions in such a turn of events. Voices to remain steadfast against Russia will echo ever more diminishingly, and look more and more like targets on heads for the roll.

However, there are only 1 or 2 pipelines, with fixed entry points into Europe (I'm not sure where but I think one is via Germany ), so there is a lot of reorganising of European group politicking to be done, quickly. A bunch of heads must roll soon to get that regrouping done fast enough to save lives.

    A couple of niggling questions:

Does Russia sell refined vehicle fuel or just crude oil?

How much of this winter's food crisis can be reversed by a drop in vehicle fuel and industrial gas supply cost, and how much of it is a full on primary source collapse ?

If the gas cut off collapses industry . . . . . how long do you think the banks will stay upright, functional and open for business, including servicing our cards at the cash machines ?

Even more of a worry, should be, how are they going to avoid grabbing the value of our personal accounts ( or a percentage of it ) and putting it on their ledger as their own capital.

    That's called a bail-in.

We may be just days away from something shocking happening with the banks.

Have you got some cash stashed ?

Articles like the above just fan the flames as far as I’m concerned. It makes it sound like one religious group were chasing down another, when in fact the violence was spurred from a cricket match not sectarianism. One team of supporters fighting a different team and all from the same area, so they knew each other. Hooligans rather than religious fanatics. It continued for a couple of weekends due to name calling over social media.

A 14-minute video of Alexander Mercouris doing his best to describe the exceptional ongoing financial train wreck which (unfortunately) is the UK right now.

As inflation surges and the pound plummets on the exchanges, he observes that Chancellor Kwasi Kuateng (the UK equivalent of Finance Minister, an arrogant, eccentric character who has just broken all the accepted rules of financial management and is under serious criticism from everyone) is very likely to be out of a job by the end of next week.

Liz Truss is looking exceptionally unimpressive and out of her depth (my comment: she certainly is), and she may only have a few weeks to avoid the same fate as Boris Johnson. Opinion polls are putting the Labour party 33% ahead of the Conservatives. (Wow, but hardly surprising.) There are no solutions in sight... and Nord Stream 1 and 2 can't now be turned on to save the day.

UK Faces Transport Troubles as Thousands of Train Drivers Strike on Wednesday

The strike is timed to coincide with the closing day of the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.

The UK is bracing for yet another wave of transport disruption on Wednesday: the drivers' union Aslef and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) have announced a major walkout amid an unresolved trade dispute. Around 9,000 train drivers are participating in the strike over pay and working conditions, meaning that no trains will operate on lines run by 13 firms, including such companies as Northern, Avanti West Coast and Southeastern.
Multiple stations around the country will remain closed.
Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan has called for government involvement, saying that transport secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan should "lift the shackles" from train companies so they could make a pay offer to the staff.
"The message I am receiving from my members is that they are in this for the long haul and, if anything, they want industrial action to be increased," he said.
Several smaller strikes are also expected to be held later this week, according to the TSSA, while the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) is also planning to re-ballot members for further strikes, planning a walkout on Saturday.
Britain has witnessed a series of major strikes this year, with a big chunk of them in the transportation industry. The workers demand a pay raise and an end to job cuts amid record-high inflation and soaring fuel prices, since the UK is facing a cost of living crisis.
Despite many attempts by the authorities to reach a settlement, the unions have refused to settle for a partial payment rise.

A 10-minute update from Alexander Mercouris, really for those in the UK who might want to grit their teeth and keep up with all the horrible details.

The briefest summary is that Liz Truss is rapidly losing the support of everyone in the country (many in the Conservative party don't like her one bit, and never have), she's done a number of train-wreck interviews which have just made everything worse, the entire thing is a disaster after only a very short time in office, the government and the economy are both broken, and Truss may well not be PM by the end of the year.
