Default Government Has Monopoly On Violence

The state has the privileged position of violence over its citizens without ramifications provided the populace considers the government as being legitimate. Dr. Steve Turley describes this concept and its implications starting at 9:30.

Very interesting insight given the current state of affairs here in the US.

Default Re: Government Has Monopoly On Violence

Recognition of your status by others is what determines your standing, legitimacy, immunity, and ultimately safety. Video comments from 9:30-12:00 seem consistent with international law. But even if you replace the political class with a different breed of people, the same situation will happen again in the future because that is what the system creates. It's a faulty design.

I don't agree with governments having monopoly on violence. The behaviour doesn't scale well and acts like a bandaid over core issues. And violence is dishonourable. From that I could argue that governments that monopolize violence are themselves dishonourable. Even if citizens think it is appropriate and legitimize it, I could further argue that the citizens don't know any better and their legitimization of it is both questionable and dishonourable. Government monopoly on violence doesn't win the honour test.
