Hurricane Ian Hitting Florida 300K+ Ordered To Evacuate 'Get Out Right Now'

The latest local news update here is that Hurricane Ian is going to make landfall soon near Fort Myers’s. We are under tornado watch till 5 pm from Hardee, Desoto, Polk, Manatee, and Sarasota county. Wauchula is under a strong tornado watch till 1 pm.
Here in Manatee we have real high winds and rain. This morning Governor DeSantis said that the Hurricane is just shy of category 5. He said to “hunker down” if you didn’t evacuate. Wind may be as high as 102 mph and higher near the eye. We are getting whipped bad outside right now!!!!

Normally I might say heads up, but in this case, heads down. Stay safe mate, and everybody else in this monster's path.

Tampa is my old stomping ground, and I have a great deal of fondness for that town. Experienced a tropical storm there once that swept through the area, and it was wild. Nothing compared to this though. I sincerely hope it's not nearly as bad as people fear, that the damage is limited and casualties mercifully small!

I'm staying with my sister, and she has a dog. A little barking demon that attacks me every opportunity it gets. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I hate the thing. If the hurricane took us both, and I had maybe 2 or 3 seconds of awareness before it all went black, I'd spend that time offering it my middle finger as we both sailed into oblivion.

Potentially devastating Hurricane Ian continues to intensify and is set to make a catastrophic landfall near Cape Coral, Florida where winds as high as 155 to 160 miles per hour (257 kmph) could impact the area along with storm surge as high as 18 feet paired with as much as 2 feet of rain across the region. This is a dangerous, life-threatening situation and all preparations should be complete as the eye of Hurricane Ian comes ashore later this afternoon. Ian is on pace to be one of the strongest US landfalls in the past couple of years, rivaling Hurricane Michael of 2018 and Ida of 2021.

DOD readies in Florida for hurricane Ian

Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said the Florida National Guard has more than 3,200 troops called on to state active duty and an additional 1,800 are standing by to be called upon, if needed.

"Florida has pre-positioned Guard soldiers, airmen and equipment at bases and armories around the state in preparation for deploying them to areas impacted by the storm," Ryder said. "These Guardsmen will provide route-clearing [and] search and rescue teams to support flood control and security."

Ryder also said aviation assets, such as helicopters, are on standby if needed, and that neighboring states are prepared to make 2,000 of their own Guard troops available.

Very off topic, but I have always wondered why anyone would want one of those tiny, annoying, gargoyle dogs.
My only clue is that it's because it's funny how detestable they are, but lap dogs are supposed to be good company--cute, cuddley and affectionate, right?
While so many of them are actually hideous, demanding, noisy and obnoxious.
I think they must appeal to people who need something external to show their repressed anger and hostility.
One of my neighbors has one who yaps incessently as she walks it around the neighborhood, as if to warn everyone not to come near during their grand procession.
(As if!!)
Another neighbor has one that screeches and howls the minute she walks out the door until the minute she returns, as if it's being tortured.
If Mike's sister's dog is anything like one of those creatures, I don't think he would suffer a whole lot of karmic consequences if he just quietly gave it a shove out the door into the storm.
And then maybe got his sister a sweet, floppy, irresistible Golden Retriever puppy to replace it.
I think he'd be doing her a big favor.
Tell us where you are in Florida, Mike, so we can watch the appropriate videos.
(I would hope to see the dog sailing through the air instead of you, however.)

I think I found your proper answer, relating to why they were bred so a long time ago. Please see S1 of P2 in the wiki of their history, following. My take about the ill temperedness: they have been on a mission against people ever since they realized folks stopped eating them... or, you know how it’s always finer to squash a mouthy adversary? Oof. I wouldn’t put it past human sacrificers.




“DNA studies suggest that native American dogs entered North America from Siberia roughly 10,000 years ago, and were then isolated for some 9000 years until the arrival of the first Europeans; these pre-contact dogs exhibited a unique genetic signature that is now almost gone.[2] A study based on sequencing of ancient dog genomes, published in 2020, suggests that pre-colonial ancestry survives in two Mexican breeds, to the extent of about 4% in the Chihuahua and some 3% in the Xoloitzcuintli.[3]
