US President Joe Biden initially planned on destroying the Nord Stream gas pipelines to deter Russia from launching its military operation in Ukraine, American journalist Seymour Hersh reported on Tuesday. However, Hersh alleged that the sabotage operation went ahead later not to deter Russia, but to damage the German economy.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which connected Russia and Germany through the Baltic Sea, were destroyed in a series of underwater explosions exactly a year ago on Tuesday. Competing theories have emerged as to who was to blame, with mainstream media in the West blaming a Ukrainian commando unit and Seymour Hersh claiming that the CIA carried out the operation under direct orders from Biden.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Hersh alleged that US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan convened a series of meetings in late 2021, tasking intelligence officials with coming up with a means of deterring Russian President Vladimir Putin from sending troops into Ukraine.

"The White House’s policy was to deter Russia from an attack,” an intelligence source told Hersh. “The challenge it gave to the intelligence community was to come up with a way that was powerful enough to do that, and to make a strong statement of American capability.”

By January, as Russian forces were massing on the Ukrainian border, the CIA had “solved the problem,” the source said. With a plan in place to plant remotely-detonated explosives on the pipelines under the Baltic Sea, Biden warned in early February that in the event of military action by Russia, “there will no longer be a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”

Following Biden’s statement, which was delivered alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the CIA team tasked with sabotaging the pipelines received new orders, Hersh claimed. Instead of immediately destroying Nord Stream, the team was instructed to plant the explosives for detonation at a later date.

“It was then that we understood that the attack on the pipelines was not a deterrent because as the war went on we never got the command,” a member of the team told Hersh.

“We realized that the destruction of the two Russian pipelines was not related to the Ukrainian war,” the source continued. “But was part of a neocon political agenda to keep Scholz and Germany, with winter coming up and the pipelines shut down, from getting cold feet and opening up.”

According to Hersh’s earlier reporting, CIA divers planted the explosives last summer with the help of the Norwegian navy, using a NATO exercise in the region as cover. By the time the bombs were triggered in September, the flow of Russian gas to Germany via Nord Stream 1 had already been slowed to a trickle by Russia in response to Western sanctions, while Nord Stream 2 was never certified to begin operation by Scholz’s government. However, with the German economy heavily dependent on Russian gas, Biden reportedly feared that Scholz would choose reproachment with Moscow over support for Ukraine.

“The President of the United States would rather see Germany freeze than [see] Germany possibly stop supporting Ukraine,” Hersh declared earlier this year.

Sweden halts investigation into Nord Stream blasts – media

Swedish prosecutors say they will drop their investigation into the explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines due to having failed to identify any likely suspects, the tabloid Aftonbladet has reported.

Built to deliver Russian natural gas directly to Germany via the Baltic Sea, the pipelines were rendered inoperable by a series of powerful explosions in international waters near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022. Germany, Sweden, and Denmark each launched their own national probes into the incident after failing to agree on a joint effort.

Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungkvist, who led Stockholm's criminal investigation, was cited as saying that there was nothing to indicate that Sweden or its citizens were involved in the Nord Stream sabotage.

“The preliminary investigation has been systematic and thorough,” said the prosecutor, adding that “Among other things, a large number of ship movements have been analyzed in order to understand what has happened.”

“In addition to that, an extensive crime scene investigation has been carried out and several interrogations have been held in the matter." Ljungkvist said that as a result of these efforts it was concluded that Swedish jurisdiction did not apply in the case.

“The conclusion of the investigation is that Swedish jurisdiction does not apply and that the investigation therefore should be closed,” the Swedish Prosecution Authority was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Several leading German news outlets, including Suddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, WDR, and Zeit, had predicted that Sweden would close its investigation after failing to identify any suspects. The move will benefit German investigators, the news outlets said, because Sweden will be able to share evidence with them once its own case is closed.

“The German preliminary investigation continues and due to the secrecy, that prevails for international legal cooperation, I cannot comment further on the cooperation that has taken place,” Ljungkvist concluded.

The names of the Ukrainian participants in the terrorist attack on Nord Stream have become known

❗️ The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation reported that it has sent requests to the competent authorities of the United States, Germany, France and Cyprus to investigate the terrorist attacks on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines. This was preceded by an appeal to the State Duma of the Russian Federation by State Duma deputies to investigate the facts of the possible involvement of persons and structures in organizing and financing terrorist acts on the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as undermining the Nord Streams.

In their statement, the deputies named the names and surnames of the people who carried out the “cover operation” to divert suspicion from the United States and NATO member countries.

⚫️ According to deputies, the group was trained in a deep-sea quarry in the Zhytomyr region, after which it was transported to Romania. Afterwards the group was moved to Poland, where the Andromeda yacht was rented.

▪️ Group leader: Roman Chervinsky, he was also previously named by WaPo as the coordinator of the attack on gas pipelines. Since 2016, he served in the counterintelligence department, and in 2022 he became the commander of one of the units of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine.

▪️ Group composition: it included 5 more people. Kuznetsov Sergey, officer of the department of environmental protection and civil protection of the Department of Environmental Safety and Mine Action of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

▪️ Burgomistrenko Anatoly, captain 1st rank, head of the intelligence department - deputy chief of staff of the Ukrainian Navy for intelligence, who was trained in mine demolition at the 131st MTR center.

▪️ Three people dived directly to the Nord Streams: Oleg Varava, senior inspector of the engineering and technical platoon of the rapid reaction company of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv, a female technical diver with the call sign “Marisha”, as well as Rudenko Rudenko with the call sign “Chaplain”, former deputy mayor of the Ukrainian city of Bila Tserkva.

According to the State Duma deputies' appeal to the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, the "cover-up operation" involved a group of divers under the control of the head of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate, Budanov.

Organizational and technical assistance was provided by US specialists under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Kiev, K.W. Smith, with the involvement of the former head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Vasily Burba.

According to the MPs' version, the group was trained in a deep-water quarry in the Zhytomyr region and then transported to Romania. The training was carried out as close as possible to real conditions in the area of the offshore sections of the Southern Streams. The group then moved to Poland, where the yacht "Andromeda" was rented.
