Default Effective Altruism - How Dangerous Is It?

Fascinating and worrisome discussion about Effective Altruism (EA)(starts around the 50 minute mark).  According to the folks on this pod-cast, it is a philosophy with the goal of doing the greatest good for mankind by earning the most money possible and then donating all your money accordingly.  As an example, EA people wont go out on Friday night to have a beer because that money could better be used to buy mosquito nets for people in Africa.  The problem with this philosophy is that it devolves into defining some lives as more valuable than others.

One of the originators of this philosophy is Peter Singer.  I could have this wrong but I believe he developed a model of what it means to be a valuable human being based on what a person's preferences are.  That model justified allowing an infant to die during the first 4 weeks of its life.  This logic is consistent with the Effective Altruist philosophy which determines what types of people should get money and resources and who should not.

The Effective Altruism topic is part of a larger discussion about Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) who said he was a Effective Altruist but then said it was all BS after the collapse of FTX.
NOTE: This pod-cast was first posted here on Avalon

The person who groomed SBF was a young Oxford philosophy professor named William MacAskill (williammacaskill.com) whose birth name is William Crouch.  He recruited SBF from MIT in 2013 (SBF was a physics major) and guided his career into Jayne Street Capital and then helped him start FTX.

I'll probably have more to say later, if this conversation gets going, but for now, I'm inclined to suggest that it's the front end of what Richard Dolan is famous for calling The Breakaway Civilisation.

Ironically, it might turn out to be the Stay Behind Civilisation, or so they might wish.

Why are they all so fond of proliferating the term Stakeholder Capitalism ? It creepily implies that there are non stakeholders, of a lesser concern of theirs.

I just thought I heard Mel K invent a new word, but it turns out it's been around since last year.
