"Listening to Alan W Watt's lectures is an amazing opportunity to gain insight, understanding and indeed, #acceptance regarding our true nature. This is an #opportunity to understand the ways in which we are one with nature and nature at one with us.

Alan Wilson Watts was a British philosopher, writer and speaker, famous for his research on comparative religion, he wrote books on subjects such as personal identity, the true nature of reality, higher #consciousness, the meaning of life, concepts and images of God and the non-material pursuit of #happiness. He relates his experience to scientific knowledge and to the teachings of Eastern and Western religion and philosophy."

"Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a well-known British philosopher, writer and speaker, best known for his interpretation of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. He left behind more than 25 books and an audio library of nearly 400 talks, which are still in great demand.

This audio is from "Man and Nature" Part 2 by Alan Watts"

(I used to live in the Bay Area, CA. and I saw Alan Watts in person when he was speaking there, which was a memorable experience.
I had a good friend who was his gardener and friend, and so there was a kind of energetic connection I had with him.
I also felt it intuitively on the day when he died.
However, I haven't really come to appreciate his wisdom and understanding of life until I've come closer to the age he was at that time.
Coming to terms with the concept of living without purpose is presently my personal "koan".
I wonder if he was an INFJ, because it seems that his very insightful ideas were perhaps his greatest contribution, and that is typical of INFJs. )

UPDATE I started this thread simply as a format for posting some of Alan Watts' talks. If other members would like to discuss him or his work in a pro vs con manner, please do so in another thread. Thank you.
PS I started a new thread entitled Alan Watts Discussion here: https://projectavalon.net/forum4/sho...=1#post1547734

My friend created this website with his quotes.

Buddhism is not saying that the Self, the great atman, or whatnot, it isn't denying that the experience which corresponds to these words is realizable.⁣ What it is saying is that if you make conceptions and doctrines about these things, your liable to become attached to them. You're liable to start believing instead of knowing. ⁣

So they say in Zen Buddhism, 'The doctrine of Buddhism is a finger pointing at the moon. Do not mistake the finger for the moon.' Or so we might say in the West, the idea of God is a finger pointing at God, but what most people do is instead of following the finger, they suck it for comfort. And so buddha chopped off the finger, and undermined all metaphysical beliefs. ⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣
There are many, many dialogues in the Pali scriptures where people try to corner the buddha into a metaphysical position. 'Is the world eternal?' The buddha says nothing. 'Is the world not eternal?' And he answers nuttin'. 'Is the world both eternal and not eternal?' And he don't say nuttin'. 'Is the world neither eternal nor not eternal?' And STILL he don't say nuttin'. He maintains what is called the noble silence. Sometimes called the thunder of silence, because this silence, this metaphysical silence, is not a void. It is very powerful. This silence is the open window through which you can see not concepts, not ideas, not beliefs, but the very goods. But if you say what it is that you see, you erect an image and an idol, and you misdirect people. It's better to destroy people's beliefs than to give them beliefs. I know it hurts, but it is The Way.⁣⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣⁣

Is every mind connected to form a peer to peer network that creates the illusion of a shared reality, making the appearance of material reality a simulation created through shared beliefs?

As far as i know, and the little i have read him, i wish there were more people willing to do the work he did to translate, but more like adapt and figure out, all the very heavy and complex stuff related both to Budishm and Zen

If there were more people these days willing to do the gigantic amount of work and life dedication he put on his work, as a life's work, then we could possibly have better world today, or at least a bigger understanding of these concepts

This may sound rude or terrible, but i think a lot of the current 'spiritual masters or guides' of the west are just riding on the work of Alan Watts, and they are not capable of anything remotely close to the work he did

I don't fully agree with all the way he translated/exposed/taught eastern philosophies or religions, but that doesn't truly matter in the greater scheme of things. It's just my opinion that he kind of westernized some stuff in ways that it lost its original meaning. But maybe, and i suppose, he did not find another way to expose it otherwise and hoped people would go deeper into it and eventually find the original concept and understand it.

But that has nothing to do with this I just think people who spend so much time and so much passion into a subject are very rare, and i do feel we lack someone like him these days

I'll go back to my room now

The Bizarre Life of Alan Watts

    Dec 3, 2022,12 min.
Alan Watts, born in England and living most of his life in the United States,
was a writer, speaker & philosopher.
Watts was best known for making Japanese, Chinese, & Indian spiritual
traditions in the form of Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism entertainingly
accessible to a wide and popular audience throughout the world.
Alan Watts also played a pivotal & central role in the spiritual revolution that
shook the religious status quo of the United States during the 1960s.
This change in the religious consciousness of the US brought to the
American public ancient teachings from Hinduism, Buddhism, Sufism,
Esoteric Christianity and other mystical religious traditions.
This spiritual revolution changed the United States in ways that are still felt
    today.
Yoga, meditation, vegetarian diets, chanting, nonviolent protests, therapies
of all kinds, feminism, equal rights, herbal & alternative medicines &
treatments, and much much more, were all first introduced to Americans in
the 1960s and were products of the spiritual revolution.
For many spiritual seekers in the United States & other parts of the Western
World, Alan Watts was their trusted guide through this incredible spiritual
    change.
Watts introduced people to spiritual and religious practices which would
help to improve and intensify the lives of hundreds of thousands, if not
    millions, of people.
And, Watts treated these unfamiliar and sometimes extremely unfamiliar
religious traditions, paths, & practices in a very readable and accessible
    writing style.----

"Welcome to Way of Thinking! Alan Watts on the topic of death and the ego.
Drawing on the insights of Zen Buddhism, he believed that the attachment to the life and circumstances were the root causes of much suffering in the world. Through his wise words, we learn how embracing the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death can help us let go of our anxieties, ideals and find true liberation and freedom.
Discover how the knowledge of death can help us lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life."

    Alan...The Zen...of purpose..
    Found in runs...

Being away from home for a while
    turning from station to station
in my dorm room, finding Alan Watts,
    a fellow traveler
    talking western zen...
And though recognizably insightful and entertaining enough, stimulating enough...
Probably not my best kind of zen, but that was okay...
I wouldn't be finding a warriors memory in the Englishman..

And Alan...finding and losing himself in the same sentences...
Does he ever listen to himself?

So much work to do as an artist
So much time does it take..
Friends asking me out into the
Strange streets of a town.... way too small
    Boring, except for my friends.
Westwood was just a station stop, down the street from
    this university..

I found the deepest meditations running down Wilshire,
    in the early morning...
hitting the center grass strips of San Vicente,
anticipating running into the very early morning fog

There it was easier to contemplate, while running..
    Alan was there too

It wasn't until I was so tired one night, listening to Alan Watts that I heard his strange breath rhythm
and I smelled a room full of smoke..
    He was a chain smoker...

I knew then that was likely the last time I'd hear him, almost live...likely only a week or month or two from the date of his recordings...
He left his body not but 2 years
from first hearing him on the radio...

Cool. He left all of this for us....and himself...

And not a half of a century away like it is now....
    It's the same and different
    And that's okay too..

I get up to check the drip in the kitchen
the one that keeps the pipes from freezing.....in...
    the early morning cold.... testing...teasing...
    the properties of water.

Leaving my room I smell chocolate
    That's right....
The bit I left on the fireplace a couple of days ago
    It's a smell I like..

Thanks for updating it all Onawah!

"Truly the best thing you can do for yourself, to feel good that is, is to do good onto others. be it small or big, a nudge in the direction of positivity is a positive self reflection. happiness is the secret to life... there's no doubt about that. one thing i can do today is amplify goodness of greater people, and act as an invisible conduit. and that feels good. 'The world is a system of interrelated components, none of which can survive without each other. Just as in the case of bees and flowers, you will never find bees around in place where there aren't flowers, and you will never find flowers around in a place where there aren't bees. What that tells us secretly, is that although bees and flowers look different from each other, they're inseparable. To use an important Taoist expression: they arise mutually.' – Alan Watts "

(I'm not listening to this series in order, but randomly according to my intuition as to which one will speak to me most clearly at the time. But listening to them in order is probably a good idea too...This particular episode has been helpful to me in consideration of the issues raised in in this thread: https://projectavalon.net/forum4/sho...t-s-for-sure--)

"In ‘On Being God,’ Alan shares on therapy, religion, mystical experiences, & Jesus, before playing the hilarious and light-shedding role of a clinical patient who realizes they’re God.

'To know that you are God is another way of saying that you feel completely with this universe, you feel profoundly rooted in it and connected with it, you feel that the whole energy which expresses itself in the galaxies, is intimate. It is not something to which you are a stranger, but it is that with which you are intimately bound up, that in your seeing, your hearing, your talking, your thinking, your moving, you express that which it is that moves the sun and other stars.' – Alan Watts"

"Sifting down behind the cultural myth of man as separate, Alan explores how we are all actually Earth, the Universe, and the Big Bang.

In this episode of Being in the Way, Alan takes us on a journey from childhood to adulthood, highlighting how we are trained into separation from a young age, and forced to focus on the never-arriving “future,” rather than being present in the moment. Through this lens, he further spelunks the “hoax of man” and offers insight into how this sense of ego identity creates tension and frustration.

This series is brought to you by the Alan Watts Organization and Ram Dass’ Love Serve Remember Foundation. Visit Alanwatts.org for full talks from Alan Watts.

    In this episode Alan discusses:

How from childhood onward we are constantly preparing for something in the future, rather than being present for life
The culture’s division of work and play, and the confused idea that money can buy you pleasure
Growing up in society, identity, defining a person, and being a “genuine fake”
How the sense of ego creates tension, separation, alienation, and frustration
The inseparable connection of the polarity of self and other
The dawn of creation and how we are not actually separate from the Big Bang
The 19th-century myth that man is a fluke in an unintelligent, automatic universe

'Your actual self—what is finally and fundamentally you—is not a separate and lonely part of the world, but the real you is the world itself, everything that there is, expressing itself as this particular organism here and now.' – Alan Watts "
