Well, poor Mara is now blind (see this post), and so having left her at home where she was quite happy for a few hours, I went to climb this dramatic little peak on my own where I celebrated on the summit with a tiny chocolate cake. And this evening, I might just possibly make some popcorn and watch a movie.

Dear Friends, I'm just bumping this post of warmest thanks in case some of you who posted afterwards never saw it.

The mountains here don't quite look like that (no snow!), but as a faithful workout discipline I head for the local hills every 3 days. I can just about do that, leaving Mara home alone, with the door-to-door absence about four and a half hours. That's all working really well for us both.

From my high viewpoint in the quoted picture above, I took this photo looking towards the camera in the other direction:



Exactly in the center of the photo, there's a little hidden lake that I'd never known was there until my hike 5 days ago when I met this beautiful young fox:



I followed him for about 10 minutes, and he led me to the beautiful little new lake, a delightful surprise. I didn't have time to explore it, so in my hike tomorrow that'll be my destination.

All this is very trivial, but I'm really just sharing how I manage my activities. My hikes take me into this gorgeous natural environment for a few hours every 3 days, just enough to keep in shape physically and (importantly!) keep in shape mentally and emotionally — because otherwise sitting at my desk staring at increasingly discouraging and worrying news, mainly featuring western world leaders all losing their minds , would gradually take its own toll.

Mountain hiking isn't something that everyone can or would want to do, for all kinds of very good reasons. But balancing things out in whatever way you can really is healing — whether it's gardening, painting, knitting, or simply spending relaxing high quality time with high quality people.
