    Most know my stance on the word: "believe" how it compares to: knowing for sure, experiencing things first hand, verifiable facts etc. etc. but I do understand the context when it is used in a certain way. So no worries everybody is free to believe what they want to believe anyway as long as they know it is just that: "a belief"

    * Not all beliefs are bad nor harmful nor "limited" ... having a "leap of faith" CAN be very helpful (and therapeutic) sometimes!

    This video correctly argues that censorship prohibits freedom of speech and free speech is tightly coupled with freedom of thought -- without one, you can't have the other.  

    There is, I think, one concept that is even more fundamental; the concept of the sovereign individual.  If you don't agree that a person is free to live his life as he sees fit, then you do not support freedom of thought for that individual.

    The 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence addresses this directly.  It states...
    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, ... 
    This is a very powerful principle of governance that frames everything the founding fathers wanted for the USA.  It says the individual is sovereign by his very existence (i.e. endowed by his Creator) and that the purpose of government is to protect his right of sovereignty i.e. to be able to think and speak what he wants.

    A Democrat Congressmen here in the US, does not believe that we are endowed by God with fundamental inalienable rights. Instead he argues that rights come from the government. The thing that terrifies me about what he says is how he framed the argument.  Most people will not understand what he is doing and will agree with him. 

    What he did was present a false argument that God would not prohibit women from voting or God would not make a man a slave.  This is something everyone would agree with. By framing the argument the way he did, it implies that it was the government that gave women the right to vote and it was government that freed slaves.  That in turn results in the logical conclusion that government gives people rights, not God.  When in fact the reality is that it was government that took away a woman's right to vote and it was government that made certain men slaves.  

    The basic concept of being endowed by God with fundamental inalienable rights is that all men are free and women can vote a priori .  That is what the starting point is and those rights are fundamental and granted by God upon birth.  It was his government that took it away and then later gave it back.
