Thank you all, Dear Friends — My birthday is today (not yesterday!), and the plan is to celebrate it with my totally blind but amazingly enthusiastic dog Mara and my friends Pema, Noam and family, taking a picnic up to a high point in the nearby and very beautiful Puma Valley — as long as we can negotiate the spectacularly swollen waterfall* which guards the only way there.

* For anyone who's not yet seen it, do take a look at the rather dramatic one-minute video which I posted here yesterday. ("Holy moly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" wrote Casey Claar, quite appropriately too.) It's stopped raining now, so with a bit of luck we may together be able to find a safe way across. I do promise to report back with some fun photos and video.

As promised! Today, the raging swollen waterfall was all back to normal levels:

Mara and I went pretty high up on Quitahuayco, at the end of the Puma Valley:



And at the end, here I am with my friends (supergirl Pema is in the middle there), who most generously not only bought me lunch at the restaurant at the trailhead, but brought along a surprise home-made cake, complete with candles.

The last time I had a cake with candles must have been over 50 years ago! I had ENORMOUS difficulty blowing them all out, as they were the kind that light up again when you're not looking, and that had Pema in uncontrollable laughter watching my antics with the cake.



It was a terrific day, all ideal in a whole bunch of ways. And my warm and sincere thanks to absolutely everyone who posted such very inspired and kind thoughts here.

Always remember! It's all of you who make the forum the beautiful little community that it is — not me.

Happy birthday Bill. You don't really know me but I've been around since the early days with you and Kerry! I had dinner with you both when you were in Australia ... but that was a loooonnngg time ago now. You look really well! And happy. All the best for the coming year. It sure is a roller coaster ride we're all on.

Really nice pics Bill, and so glad Mara is making her way, there pretty remarkable aren't they. A few days ago my great aunt turned 97 , and today my very good buddy turns 94. He was a bridge builder and oh the stories. Looks like this is a time of longevity for anyone born during this month. Hope your along the same lines sir. Happy birthday and thanks for the pics.

You can see in this photo of myself with Mara that I shared, I'm wearing cheap $10 plastic mud boots ('wellingtons', as the Brits say ).



I normally wear much more high-tech lightweight hiking shoes (these ones, the best I've ever found), but I opted for the heavier and clumsier waterproof boots yesterday as when leaving home I couldn't be sure sure what the waterfall would be like. (If it's not too high, I can usually find a way to hop across the rocks and stay dry!)
