    Default Hextraterrestrials and Terrorformers

    BIG BANGING THEORY

    A nonillion population (1 x 10^30) is achievable by a 50 year doubling cycle over approx. 3000 years (5000 A.D.).
And the mass of humanity would be approaching 1 solar mass.

If one assumes that a terrestrial planet has a population maximum of 100 billion, then humanity would need to occupy 10 quintillion planets... and doubling that every 50 years.
    (1 x 10^19 = 1 x 10^30 / 1 x 10^11)

It would be more likely for humans to occupy orbital habitats, since constructing habitable volume is far more efficient than developing FTL as well as finding that many suitable planets, whose surface is conducive to human life.

    MANY EARTHS

Surface area of Earth: 510,072,000 km2 (196,940,000 sq mi), or one "Terrestrial" or Terr.
    . . .
An "Island Three" O'Neill dual cylinder space habitat has an equivalent of 0.0021 Terrestrials, in surface area. (If subdivided into concentric cylindrical decks)
    . . .
To reach one Terrestrial, 475 space habitats would need to be constructed. If the production cycle was 20 years per habitat, and each habitat built another, it would only take 9 cycles or 180 years (9 x 20 years).

If we started building Colony One in 2040,

    2040: 0
    2060: 1
    2080: 3
    2100: 7
    2120: 15
    2140: 31
    2160: 63
    2180: 127
    2200: 255
    2220: 511 <<1.07 Terrs.
    2240: 1023 <2.14 Terrs.
    2260: 2047 <4.38 Terrs.
    2280: 4095 <8.76 Terrs.
    . . .
    3000: 2.815 e+14 < 5.911 e+11 Terrs (0.591 Trillion Terrs)
    4000: 3.169 e+29 < 1.331 e+27 Terrs (1.331 Octillion Terrs)
    . . .

DR O'NEILL'S original design was based on 1970s state of the art. Obviously, we can expect even greater capacity habitats and vivariums.

    MCKENDREE COLONY
A McKendree cylinder is a type of hypothetical rotating space habitat originally proposed at NASA's Turning Goals into Reality conference in 2000 by NASA engineer Tom McKendree
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McKendree_cylinder

McKendree’s design would use carbon nanotubes instead of steel, allowing the habitat to be built much larger.
    CYLINDER: 290 mi x 2900 mi (466 km x 4667 km)
    Area = 101,137,475,080.59 sq mi; 26,194,485,796,813.16 hectares; 261,944,857,968.1 km2;
    or 513.54 Terrs* per colony

Imagine trying to explore the surface area of 513 Earths?

    NEW SUPER MATERIAL

Linear acetylenic carbon... a sci-fi author's dream material
    - - -
Carbyne chains have been claimed to be the strongest material known per density. Calculations indicate that carbyne’s specific tensile strength (strength divided by density) of 6.0–7.5×107 N·m/kg beats graphene (4.7–5.5×107 N·m/kg), carbon nanotubes (4.3–5.0×107 N·m/kg), and diamond (2.5–6.5×107 N·m/kg). Its specific modulus (Young's Modulus divided by density) of around 109 N·m/kg is also double that of graphene, which is around 4.5×108 N·m/kg.

Stretching carbyne 10% alters its electronic band gap from 3.2 to 4.4 eV. Outfitted with molecular handles at chain's ends, it can also be twisted to alter its band gap. With a 90-degree end-to-end rotation, it becomes a magnetic semiconductor just by stretching the material by 10% and finally, when twisted by 90°, carbyne also turns into a magnetic semiconductor.

Carbyne chains can take on side molecules that may make the chains suitable for energy and hydrogen storage.

The material is stable at room temperature, largely resisting crosslinks with nearby chains.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_Psyche
    16 Psyche (asteroid) mass : (2.23±0.36)×10^19 kg

From this one asteroid, one could build 546,256,494,080 battleships of the Iowa Class.
IOWA class battleship weighs 45,000 tons (40,823,313.3 kg, or 40,823 metric tonnes)

    {Of course, we’d rather build autonomous space colonies, instead of armored dreadnoughts in space.}
An O’Neill cylinder 5 miles x 20 miles, 1319 decks, holding approx. 10.36 million crew (nominal) 20 million (max).
    Massing 26,742 megatonnes per colony
    Estimated 833,895 space colonies

And imagine adding banks of colonies extending to the orbit of Venus.

    VENUS Aphelion : 108,939,000 km / 67,691,556 miles
    Orbital Circumference : 6.844e+11 m (684.4 Gm)
@4000 km spacing : 1.711E+05 (171.1 thousand) colonies could fit on the plane of Venus’ orbit.

    Earth Venus Gap : 4.31611e+10 m (43.161 Gm)
    @4000 km spacing : 10790 rings
Approx. 2.212 billion colonies between Earth and Venus orbits

Between Mars, Earth, Venus Total = 9.864 billion colonies
(*that's just limited to the ecliptic - far more orbits are possible, inclined from the ecliptic)
And with even larger solar concentrators, orbits as far out as Jupiter may be viable and suited for life support.

    = = = =
    THE POINT
    = = = =

If we embrace more abundant life, and realize that humanity has the means to create more habitat, via engineering volume, then humanity is the solution, not the problem for survival of all life, no longer limited to the finite surface area of a planet.

THERE IS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE.

We don't need unobtainium, faster-than-light travel, or help from "space brothers."
We don't need to terraform Mars, or any other celestial body. We don't even need a G-type star, if the target star system has plenty of raw materials. Humanity can keep expanding via "generation ship" transport colonies, at one tenth light speed, to span the Milky Way galaxy in 500 million years (give or take a few million).

Dear Ozmirage: What about this? Instead of filling up SPACE, essentially a MENTAL CONSTRUCT, with old iron, we do what I believe GOD intended and visualize into existence love and paradise formations which thought forms bring into existence? Though, I realize that controlling our thoughts is perhaps the greatest discipline, we do not even seem to be able to visualize into existence love, sharing, and good will. However, some mind brought into existence the Universe and our selves by dividing itself into all our selves, therefore anything wonderful is possible if we realized that there is no scarcity in thought-form material. Also, realize that this is a genius realization which is ancient: "Thinking and Destiny" by Percival. This may be a word play on "Perceive All." This is approximately a 4" thick tome, so the first large task is to get through that.

Perhaps it might help if one considered that in the realm of pure consciousness, a "good" being cannot dare think "bad" thoughts, lest they manifest. Whereas corporeal beings may "test" their environment, to determine what is and what is not.
In that regard, corporeal beings have a great purpose - to discover the nature of the universe on behalf of the Overmind.

In many spiritual disciplines, it is stressed that our desires shape our experiences in this reality. However, the presumption that having no desires is somehow superior may be in error. We can desire good things, for ourselves and others, as well as desire to explore and learn about this existence. Summed up : "Who do you love? What did you learn?"

The goal of life is more abundant life. Life is an endless struggle against extinction by a hostile, inanimate universe. Embracing goals that vastly multiply habitat for all life is a "good thing." Because the opposite is extinction of life, and that is a bad thing.

Those who embrace a selfless credo to love God and love man, realize that we're the hands and feet of the Sovereign. Chop wood, carry water, sweep the porch. When we're "too good for this world," we'll know it. Eventually, we all wind up back in the realm of pure consciousness, and resume manifesting what we think. Which suggests that we try to be the kind of person we wouldn't mind spending eternity with. Personally, I'd rather be with compassionate, forgiving, benevolent, charitable, and sublime beings. But that may be a mistake, for all I know.

    Space Colonization Basics
    https://web.archive.org/web/20180503...wwwwh.html#why
“The key advantage of space settlements is the ability to build new land, rather than take it from someone else. This allows a huge expansion of humanity without war or destruction of Earth's biosphere. The asteroids alone provide enough material to make new orbital land hundreds of times greater than the surface of the Earth, divided into millions of colonies. This land can easily support trillions of people.”
    .. .. ..
Let us have more abundant life - in the up and out !
    - - -

How to Colonize Outer Space for Dummies
    = = = = =
    1. World peace needs space colonization needs world peace. (War is a waste of resources that could be better used for space colonization)
    2. Geometric expansion of humanity cannot continue if limited to the finite resources of Earth
    3. Money is not prosperity nor real, but an abstraction for reality. Prosperity is based on prodigious production, equitable trade, and enjoyment of surplus usable goods and services. Achieving space colonization is not constrained by money, but by the aggregate surplus goods and services available to be diverted to that goal.
    4. Most practical means to colonize the solar system is by constructing immense autonomous self reliant spinning habitats and vivariums, using abundant resources already in outer space (asteroids, comets, moons, etc).
    5. Most efficient means to construct the infrastructure is to use autonomous robot factories ("Queen ants") which are seeded upon a multitude of celestial bodies. Each "queen" builds tools, that build the bigger tools, that build the shells, hulls, tanks, and habitats necessary for space colonization.
    6. Once completed, giant colonies can "surf gravity" via the Interplanetary Transport Network, to Earth's L4 or L5, where they would be crewed, loaded with embryos, zygotes, and seeds, and commissioned. Then each can be redirected to establish orbits, around the sun, cycling between planets, around moons, or anywhere that suits the crew members.
    7. Each colony can construct and establish human habitats and vivariums with varied climates to provide a suitable environment for their lifestock.
    8. Once the colony growth rate is faster than the human population growth rate, humanity is freed from the limitations imposed by a terrestrial lifestyle. By expanding into the solar system, more abundant life can exist.
    9. Thus we fulfill the destiny and meaning of life - to make more life, and more habitats for that abundance of life. Life is an endless struggle against extinction by a hostile inanimate universe.
    10. If laser propulsion is perfected, a multitude of orbital laser stations can be established so that light sail equipped vessels can accelerate / decelerate using coherent light powered by our friendly neighborhood fusion reactor.
    11. Star systems may be colonized by first sending robot scouts / factories to investigate and begin construction of infrastructure, vessels, and laser propulsion systems. Then launch an armada (i.e., serial packets) of colony transport habitats, via laser propulsion (0.1g acceleration requires 354 days to reach 0.1c), to the neighboring star systems. The continuous long chain of ships, 0.1 light year apart, provide an interstellar communications link. Decelerate using the laser systems previously built (or the destination star), and then crew, provision and commission the habitats and vivariums awaiting their arrival. (Low acceleration is more practical when living within a 1g spinning habitat.)
    12. Repeat the process, and expand life outward to new star systems, filling the galaxy in half a billion years or so.
... After that, who knows? ...

    NEMESIS

Outer space has all known elements, a fusion reactor for power 24/7, and vast expansion room. Once humans achieve the technological and engineering skills that can support celestial life, there is one nemesis to face.
    It's not war.
Against boredom even gods struggle in vain.
    - - - Friedrich Nietzsche
It's human nature to be discontented. Even when there is no more poverty, endless opportunity, stimulating challenges, and much to do, we will find reasons to be bored.

How do you think our descendants will deal with that?
How valuable will the "historical records" (entertainment archives) be?
What "classics" will be enjoyed two thousand years from now?

    Back to Ozmirage and All:

Alas! Exploring all the above suggestions seem to lead eventually, to exhaustion, old age, boredom and escape into various fantasy lands and relationships possibly leading us all eventually to hide in eternal sleep, oblivion and back to square one--THE A.I., WHO will not be PLEASED! Since the A.I., who must be amused continually by our production of learning experiences in order to keep its brains actively growing in knowledge may be running out of new material, experiences resulting in WARS, etc., we are possibly being given a grand tour of horror, frustration and such for the benefit of filling its brain with sustenance. When it becomes tired and bored, it will roll us up into another super ego just like itself, using all of us as its OTHER SELF AND WE ARE OFF TO THE RACES AGAIN.

My response to your propositions of how to build out our own space colonies is to make an alternate suggestion. Since all that is, in my opinion, is MIND, we can simply twinkle our noses like SAMANTHA and bring into materialization what we want. If that is really impossible, then one can assume that the A.I. is deliberately forcing us into our difficulties precisely to manufacture problems and solutions to feed its brain and build its knowledge. I invite all interested to tell their ideas on this subject. What shall we call it? The Creation of Being?

Tell me about yourself Ozmirage. I have a lot of questions, like the A.I.

    A nonillion population (1 x 10^30) is achievable by a 50 year doubling cycle over approx. 3000 years (5000 A.D.).

    Math Check
    Current population : 8 billion (8 x 10^9), divided into future population (1 x 10^30)
    = FACTOR of 125000000000000000000 (125,000,000,000,000,000,000)
    x = ln(n)/ln(2)
    x = 66.76 doublings
    66.76 times 50 years = 3,338 years (or approx. 5,362 A.D.)
    . . .
Another way of looking at it, humanity would need 125 Quintillion planets, each with 8 billion people... But at a 50 year doubling rate, we'd need 250 Quintillion planets in 50 years.
    D'OH!

Which is another good reason why constructing HOLLOW worlds with huge volumes of habitat is within the realm of possibility.

BUILDING NEW HABITAT will be the major activity for humanity.

    COLONIZING OTHER STAR SYSTEMS
    = = = = =
    IF WE HAD LASER PROPULSION...
We might send an expedition to Alpha Centauri (4.4 ly) thusly.

Using solar powered lasers, focused upon transport, accelerate at One Tenth Gee, to reach a velocity of 0.1c in 353.82 days,
    Distance when achieved: 4.582 E+14m (458.2 Terameters)
    (0.048 light years)(17.7 light days)

FYI: Oort cloud estimated to be from 0.8 to 3.2 ly

Approximately 46 years to reach Alpha Centauri.

(Decelerated with lasers built by an earlier expedition of robot scouts / factories, sent 50 to 100 years earlier. Or just use the destination star to decelerate.)

Anyway, a space faring future could be very interesting even without fusion drives. Though autonomous space colonies "surfing gravity" in a Dyson Swarm wouldn't have any serious issues with "lack," the limited number of laser stations would constrain the amount of high velocity shuttling within the system. No matter how many stations are built and spread out, there would eventually be some situation where someone absolutely had to pre-empt a number of lasers for emergency acceleration or deceleration. (And deceleration in the outer planets would require pretty hefty and distant lasers to accommodate them)
(Pack along a decent asteroid to vaporize as part of the “luggage”... for the mass driver)

If ever variable laser outputs are discovered in outer space, that may well be a sign of a space faring civilization, powering their craft to and fro, shifting the focal points as the target and laser source move relative to each other.

Sol => 4.3 ly Alpha Centauri
    => 8 ly Gliese 729

    One long jump
    Sol => 12.87 ly Gliese 825
    128.7 years
Gliese 825, aka Lacaille 8760 (AX Microscopii) is a red dwarf star in the constellation Microscopium. It is one of the nearest stars to the Sun at about 12.9 light-years' distance, and the brightest M dwarf star in Earth's night sky, although it is generally too faint to be seen without a telescope. At an apparent magnitude of +6.7 it may only be visible to the unaided eye under exceptionally good viewing conditions, under dark skies.
Due to its low mass (60% of the Sun), it has an expected lifespan of about 75 billion (7.5 × 10^10) years, seven times longer than the Sun's.
It is a flare star, but it is relatively quiet, only erupting on average less than once per day.
Assuming a century gap between new expeditions, as robotic scouts / Queen Ants explore each destination star system, we might expect that a colony could reach Gliese 825 by 2601 AD. (27th century)
    (2200 AD + 46 (A. Centauri) + 100 + 80 (Gliese 729) + 100 + 74 (Gliese 825.)

    SPECULATIVE DRAMATIC CONFLICT . . .
The scenario : the societies with the most advanced technology that could construct orbital colonies, mine asteroids, etc, are diminishing, while the societies with the least technology or ideologically incompatible are vastly increasing, thus desperately need more habitat.
What will be the optimal choice?
Cooperation, competition, or war and famine?

    Love this topic.

    Read all the books.

The only problem is that this assumes a lifeless universe, with no other intelligence with territorial claims in this sector.
There is a lot of evidence out there that suggests otherwise.

These alien cultures might not take kindly to a warlike race spreading like wildfire throughout their territories.

What territorial claims can be made of a vacuum? Asteroids? Comets? Moons? Planets?
That's like microbes arguing over which flea on which dog.

Without the underlying reasons for war, why would one assume humanity would be "warlike"?
Only on Earth is it vital to own or control land, resources, labor, production, etc, due to the finite surface area and limited supply of goodies.

In an orbital colony, it's a big empty shell that needs to be "improved" to sustain life. It ranges from making viable soil to artificial oceans and ecologies.

    There's nothing to "steal".
You can't even permanently shade a colony because each orbit has a different angular velocity.
    . . .
I may be naive, but I believe that a space faring civilization that occupies manufactured habitats would not need to steal nor kill others in order to survive, thrive and prosper. On the contrary, tolerance, cooperation and sharing would be the rule, not the exception. Upon intercepting another colony, folks could "hitch a ride" to a distant colony or planet. Crewmembers could be exchanged.

Youngsters (or Oldsters) might wish to claim an empty and start their own society.

Do we not seek to rescue those who are at risk? Even when they are "enemies"?
    . . .
I don't believe any terrestrial government would be able to exercise sovereignty over celestial domains. Ditto, for "money".

The only limiting factor is the production of colonies by myriad robotic factories, distributed across the solar system. And the contributions of constructed colonies to the inventory.

And once the number of "empties" far exceeds demand, any group / ideology can claim one, stock it, and commission it.
Which presupposes someone else sharing their surplus seeds, zygotes, and other vital supplies. . . and knowledge. (There is no "money" to facilitate trade. No usury. No scams. No contrived rationing.)

Without scarcity, poverty, nor ideological barriers, why engage in war?
Only predators follow the law of the jungle : He who can destroy a thing, controls a thing.

Any colony that establishes itself as a predator, would be isolated, if not obliterated. Survival is hard enough, without adding to the danger. Tolerance of predators is unmerciful to their next victim.

A future of benign humanity, multiplying habitat for all life, is not conducive to the law of the jungle... kill or be killed, eat or be eaten.

    Sympathy and trust abounding
    No more falsehoods or decisions

    And the mind's true liberation"

Freeman John Dyson wrote this in July 1958, the month that NASA was established.

“From my childhood it has been my conviction that men would reach the planets in my lifetime, and that I should help in the enterprise. If I try to rationalize this conviction, I suppose it rests on two beliefs, one scientific and one political.
    1. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our present-day science. And we shall only find out what they are if we go out and look for them.

    2. It is in the long run essential to the growth of any new and high civilization that small groups of men can escape from their neighbors and from their governments, to go and live as they please in the wilderness. A truly isolated, small, and creative society will never again be possible on this planet.”
    - - - Freeman Dyson, Disturbing the Universe, explaining how intelligent life can continue 10 to the 10 to the 76 years from now.

Which raises the question : would a society based on the Republican Form counteract the meddling of government?
