    Most interestingly, at the very end of her book, Annie Jacobsen refers to Göbekli Tepe, describing it as a kind of never-give-up-all-hope inspiration.

    Here's how that section begins, at page 278. She acknowledges that the people who built Göbekli Tepe knew some kind of great catastrophe, either just before their time or during their lives. It all sounds very somber, but the point she makes is that no matter what happens to our current civilization, humans will always survive, and so will Planet Earth.

    ~~~
    Years pass. Hundreds of years. Thousands of years.
    The life-sustaining capacity of the terrestrial environment, greatly reduced at first, becomes revitalized and rejuvenated. Temperatures return to prewar conditions. New species develop and thrive.
    So much has been damaged, but planet Earth has a way of always recovering and repairing herself, at least so far. The soil rebounds, as does the quality of the water supply. The ultraviolet rays that sent human survivors underground have softened and become nurturing again.
    If human beings do survive, how will they begin anew? And will these new humans of the future become archaeologists? Will they ever know we were all once here?
    Ten thousand . . . twenty thousand . . .
    Twenty-four thousand years pass.
    Roughly twice as long as the approximate amount of time it took for humans to evolve from hunter-gatherers to today. The radiation poisoning from nuclear World War III has naturally decayed.
    Will future humans find any traces of us? Of our societies that we once built, advanced, and made thrive?
    ~~~

    Her answer is Yes, of course. She goes on to say that our own detailed history would become myth and legend, but that teams of intelligent, organized and capable humans would come together, as they always do, and rebuild.

    (
    What she doesn't say is that this kind of wipe-out-and-restart, no matter how it was caused, may have happened quite a number of times before.)

    Bill Ryan -
    One of the pillars at Gobekli Tepe contains the markings for "flood", and based upon the historical timeline I believe that they were predicting the comet strike that caused the Black Sea to flood most of the Levant about 7300 BC. But there were many floods and yes, many groups of humans that fell and later restarted anew.

    “All it takes is one nihilistic madman with a nuclear arsenal” – quote by Richard Garwin from the above interview

    Firstly, here’s a link to transcript. I found it easier to digest than the interview, which moves along at pace:.
    https://www.happyscribe.com/public/l...oswell-secrecy

    A case in point:
    “a nuclear armed, nuclear powered submarine is as dangerous to civilization as an asteroid. They are unstoppable. They are unlocatable. The former chief of the nuclear submarine forces, Admiral Michael Connor, said it's easier to find a grapefruit sized object in space than a submarine under the sea. So these things are like hell machines, and they're moving around throughout the oceans. Ours (ie USA), Russia's, China's, maybe, North Korea's, constantly. And we now know they're sneaking up to the east and west coast of the United States within a couple hundred miles”.

    According to Chat GPT, there are approximately 160 nuclear submarines in the world. UK and France have 4 each and the rest are owned by United States, Russia, China and India. Google reveals that 9 nuclear submarines have sunk and although there must be multi safety levels built into the craft, presumably they still post an environmental threat.
    Overall, what was brought home to me from this interview was that nuclear war today would be nothing like Hiroshima or Nagasaki, horrific though they were. Forget about evacuation, bug-out bag or getting to a place of safety, even if you could get to a spot miles underground. Spending 6 minutes running to a “safe place” would seem to be to waste the last 6 minutes of our lives.

    In the meantime I’m working my way through the transcript . . .
    Hi Miller, Just two things if i may, if these Nuclear subs are "Unlocatable" how do the yanks know they got as close to the USA east and West coasts of within a couple of hundred miles....?

    And this last sentence in paragraph 1,......."And we now know they're sneaking up to the east and west coast of the United States within a couple hundred miles”.
    When the author (dunno who that is) says,.........."And we now know they're sneaking up", ....any idea who "they're" are supposed to be...? Chinese, Russian, India, maybe all of the above lol.

    Anyway im not nit picking at you Miller, i like your stuff here, but my brain askes me so many questions that i need to share and hopefully get answers from you guys here.

    RRR
    Hi RRR

    No problem, although the quote about the nuclear submarine isn't mine. It was taken directly from the Transcript of the first video with Annie Jacobsen and Lex Fridman from 26:21.

    Interestingly, however, I just googled that quote with the prefix: "Who said . . . ." and the quote was actually made by Michael Crichton, author and scriptwriter of Jurassic Park during a speech at the National Press Club on January 25, 2005. It was described as a "hyperbolic" statement to stress the serious nature of nuclear deterrence and associated ongoing challenges. Annie Jacobsen then follows that statement with another from Admiral Michael Connor, "It's easier to find a grapefruit-sized object in space than a submarine under the sea" and continues with the rest of your question and then answers it more fully. Give it a listen Rob . . .

    As an aside "they" could also be the naval fleets of all the countries in the world as they're all on manoeuvres when they're not at war, aren't they, practicing for the main event (tongue in cheek). Talking of which, here's a cheeky tale:

    Many years ago in Cape Town, an article appeared in a Sunday paper about standard naval manoeuvres taking place just off the coast; unbeknown to the South African ship taking part, the submarine had broken down on its way from Simonstown but another submarine - thought to be Russian - took on the role with gusto, completed the exercise and then headed back out to sea, all without revealing who they were!
    "Is there an idea more radical in the history of the human race than turning your children over to total strangers whom you know nothing about, and having those strangers work on your child's mind, out of your sight, for a period of twelve years?" John Taylor Gatto

    Annie Jacobsen is asked this question at 37:40 in a third interview, not posted here. She explains that there's a system called SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System) which is very complex, and can identify where the subs were but not where they are in real time.

    SOSUS type systems, such as sound buoys, have been in use since the Vietnam war - but that only gives them a general idea. How they know that they are creeping in is because our subs shadow theirs and vice versa. When one of theirs exits the arctic heading south, we have one or two on its tail at all times. In fact we use these "exercises" to determine how good our silent running techniques are, and to determine if the unfriendlies have advanced any of their tech.

    I handled the traffic between ComNavSubPac and the Pacific Fleet of Subs for four years. I would put them and their skills ahead of the AirForce any day of the week. Once a pilot overflew China by accident - went 75 miles in country, and the ChiComs wound up to let loose on him. He was carrying nuclear weapons at the time. We almost lost it that day. The US is capable of anything, including sending a plane over, only to lose it, just to test China's response, or sending a ship right off N Korea just to plant fake intel on them. Lost the ship and the crew tortured, some killed, the rest maligned? No Problemo. We once sent a National Geographic type wooden sail craft right off the coast of China, setting depth charges to "chart the coral reefs or something" - almost lost it that day as well. But we found out how their radar worked on wooden craft. No problem that the scientists had no idea what was up. Nasty things go on all the time, and today is no exception.

    When one of ours exits Conn. or Virginia, they have one of theirs on ours. With nuclear power, they can stay roaming for more than a year, and with the new snorkel systems, stay underwater for long periods of time. Once they "paint' the side of the unfriendly, much like the Army ground troops paint their targets for missile strikes, satellites can take over the tracking. But the shadowing goes on.

    I think this also belongs on this thread, a very interesting 20 minute presentation by Paul Jay, a journalist and filmmaker who is currently working on a documentary titled How to Stop a Nuclear War based on Daniel Ellsberg’s book “The Doomsday Machine."

    There are some key things here that appear to have been overlooked by Annie Jacobsen, despite her clearly having interviewed a great many senior people directly connected with the American military and intelligence agencies.

    In the video below, which is only part of Paul Jay's presentation (so there's no introduction), 'Dan' is Daniel Ellsburg. The key takeaway from this is that the whole nuclear arms race that was initiated after WWII was a strategy by the American military arms manufacturers to continue to stay in business and profit greatly from it. I have no difficulty fully believing that this was the case.

    How to Stop a Nuclear War

    From the YouTube text:

    ~~~
    Militarism and financialization became crucial parts of the U.S. economy and politics since World War I. In 1934, Smedley Butler, a highly decorated American soldier, wrote a book titled "War is a Racket," which exposed the profit motives behind warfare.
    As Daniel Ellsberg pointed out, after World War II, the development of nuclear weapons and the Cold War narrative provided the foundation for an even greater expansion of the military-industrial-financial complex. Today, the militarist “racket” has led to an all-out nuclear arms race that threatens, not only our economy, but our very existence.
    ~~~

    The four ways to avert nuclear war that Paul Jay summarizes and explains are:
    1. Eliminate the US's "Launch on warning" doctrine.
    2. Phase out ICMBs.
    3. Negotiate a new ABM (Anti Ballistic Missile) Treaty.
    4. Start to think about the nuclear launch problems potentially posed by emerging AI.
    Here's Daniel Ellsburg's important book, now in the Avalon Library:

    (Smedley Butler's classic 1934 book War is a Racket is also here.)

    MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia does not violate international law, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday, commenting on the Pentagon's statement that Russia allegedly launched a satellite carrying a counterspace weapon.

    "I cannot comment on this in any way. Here, we act absolutely in accordance with international law, we do not violate anything," Peskov told reporters.
    On Tuesday, US Defense Department spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said that Russia launched last week a satellite carrying a counterspace weapon that is presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit. Ryder claimed that Russia deployed the satellite without communicating this fact to the United States. On Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov call the statement misinformation.
    Russia has repeatedly advocated bans on the deployment of any weapons in space, but its initiatives are rejected, Peskov said.

    Regarding silent submarines and SOSUS technologies there is actually quite a decent film that at least skirts around this very subject. A typical American driven action/drama where the US is the saviour from unstable irrational Russians, however for all that it is quite a decent and entertaining film if you don't get overanalytical.

    Called: The Last Generation - The Secret History of American Nuclear War

    There's also this very interesting interview that Ellsberg gave to Timothy Naftali, director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library back in 2008, a copy of which has been saved to our library as well >> https://www.nixonlibrary.gov/sites/d...2008-05-20.pdf

    Default Re: Nuclear War - Annie Jacobsen

    I think this is very relevant here, as much of Annie Jacobsen's new book (and her many interviews about it) is about how easily a nuclear war could start by accident, and how the various early warning systems attempt to work.

    On 5 January 2007, the BBC aired a documentary titled 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse. It's about how a major, scripted war game held by US and NATO called Able Archer alarmed the Soviets so much that they went on full nuclear launch alert, with pilots sitting ready in their cockpits and keys poised in bunkers to launch a full-on nuclear retaliation.

    The documentary is superb, including interviews with former deeply embedded Cold War spies who — arguably — may have been the ones who really saved the day. It details how a whole bunch of coincidental factors all came together to create a perfect storm of justified paranoia on behalf of the Soviet leaders at the time, which the west had been blissfully unaware of.

    (The documentary also features a fascinating interview with Stanislav Petrov, who just a couple of months before Able Archer single-handedly defied all Soviet military protocol and — correctly! — disregarded an apparently very real Soviet warning of a US missile launch. For his pains, he was dismissed from the Soviet military and only years later did his remarkable story come to light. Do see this wonderful Avalon thread: Two men who saved the world).

    Able Archer 1983: The Brink of Apocalypse

    Just click on the video link below. The documentary is right there.

    Here's an accompanying BBC article, published years later in 2018, itself well worth reading in full.
    The war game that could have ended the world

    A military exercise staged 35 years ago this week almost triggered World War Three. BBC Future reports on previously secret documents that reveal what happened.

    On 7 November 1983, around 100 senior military officers gathered at Nato headquarters in Brussels to ‘fight’ World War Three. The annual simulation, known as Able Archer, came at the end of a large-scale conventional exercise – Autumn Forge – involving tens of thousands of Nato troops across western Europe.

    Able Archer 83 was held at a time of heightened Cold War tension. Relations between Warsaw Pact and Nato-aligned nations were as bad as they had ever been. Earlier in the year, US President Ronald Reagan had branded the Soviet Union an “evil empire.” And, in September, Soviet pilots had shot down a Korean Airlines 747, killing all 269 people on board.

    Meanwhile, both sides of the Iron Curtain were in the process of deploying medium range nuclear weapons – including cruise missiles based at Greenham Common in southern England – capable of striking targets within five minutes of launch. The world was on a nuclear hair-trigger.

    According to the fictional scenario behind the Able Archer 83 war game, turmoil in the Middle East was putting a squeeze on Soviet oil supplies. Meanwhile, Yugoslavia – which wasn’t aligned to either side of the Cold War – decided to back the West. The Soviet leaders in the game feared this would lead to a cascade of other eastern European countries following suit, switching allegiance from the Warsaw Pact to Nato, and putting the entire communist system at risk.

    (... the excellent article continues)

    @Bill - "how easily a nuclear war could start by accident"

    Maybe we are now a step beyond that? - since the West is (repeatedly) attempting to start a nuclear war on purpose.

    I'm listening to it right now, and yes, it's sobering indeed. Not that many analysts (including those currently in the Pentagon) know as much about nuclear weaponry as Scott does.

    He's furious and disgusted, and at times sounded like someone about to jump off a bridge. It's pretty understandable given that he devoted a major part of his life to practical and workable nuclear disarmament, a great deal of which has now come undone — the US being almost entirely responsible. This fits on this thread because the very dangers of all this go hand in glove with all the warnings raised by Annie Jacobsen.

    He probably knew the end of his presidency was near, and he was very drunk one night, and he began to threaten or rather he just began to talk you know in this sort of extremely verbose drunken manner about how he could end the world or kill tens of millions of people with the push of a button.

    • The INSTANT New York Times bestseller & Instant Los Angeles Times bestseller
    “In Nuclear War: A Scenario, Annie Jacobsen gives us a vivid picture of what could happen if our nuclear guardians fail…Terrifying.”—Wall Street Journal

    There is only one scenario other than an asteroid strike that could end the world as we know it in a matter of hours: nuclear war. And one of the triggers for that war would be a nuclear missile inbound toward the United States.

    Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have.

    Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons, have been privy to the response plans, and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made. Nuclear War: A Scenario examines the handful of minutes after a nuclear missile launch. It is essential listening, and unlike any other book in its depth and urgency.
