    A steady rise in #US-trained nurses moving to #Canada highlights mounting unease within parts of the American healthcare workforce.

    Nurse migration to Canada surges under Trump's term

    A growing wave of American nurses, physicians, and other health care professionals is relocating to Canada, particularly to British Columbia, where more than 1,000 US-trained nurses have been approved to practice since April.

    Many cite Canada’s progressive political climate, welcoming reputation, and universal healthcare system as key attractions. For some, these features stand in sharp contrast to authoritarian tendencies under President Donald Trump, as well as substantial cuts to public health funding, insurance programs, and medical research in the United States.

    Frustration also intensified last year when the Trump administration proposed reclassifying nursing as a nonprofessional degree, a move that would have imposed strict federal limits on student loans available to nursing students.

    Canada streamlines recruitment

    Canadian officials have moved quickly to capitalize on this discontent. Ontario and British Columbia, the country’s two most populous provinces, have simplified licensing procedures for American nurses since President Trump returned to the White House.

    British Columbia also launched a $5 million advertising campaign aimed at recruiting nurses from California, Oregon, and Washington state.

    "With the chaos and uncertainty happening in the US, we are seizing the opportunity to attract the talent we need," said Josie Osborne, British Columbia’s health minister, in a statement announcing the campaign.

    The killing of Pretti

    On January 24, federal immigration officers clashed with protesters. During the confrontation, ICU nurse Alex Pretti was fatally shot while filming and appearing to shield a woman who had fallen. Video footage showed agents restraining Pretti, seizing his licensed concealed handgun, and then shooting him.

    The Trump administration described Pretti as a "domestic terrorist" who intended to kill federal agents. That characterization was disputed by eyewitness videos circulating on social media, sparking widespread outrage, including among nurses and professional organizations that cited the profession’s duty to protect the vulnerable.

    Staffing shortages on both sides of the border

    Both the United States and Canada face significant nursing shortages. Recent estimates from the Health Resources and Services Administration project that the US will be short roughly 270,000 registered nurses and at least 120,000 licensed practical nurses by 2028.

    In Canada, nursing vacancies nearly tripled between 2018 and 2023, reaching close to 42,000 positions, according to a report from the Montreal Economic Institute.

    Responding to reports of nurses relocating, the White House pointed to industry data showing an increase in US nurse licensing in 2025. Officials dismissed accounts of migration north as "anecdotes of individuals with severe cases of Trump derangement syndrome."

    "The American health care workforce is the finest in the world, and it continues to expand under President Trump," White House spokesperson Kush Desai said.

    "Employment opportunities in the American health care system remain robust, with career advancement and pay that far exceed that of other developed nations," Desai added.

    Licensing data shows sharp increase

    Precise figures on how many American nurses have moved to Canada since President Trump’s return to office remain unclear, as some provinces do not systematically publish such data.

    British Columbia, however, has reported a significant jump. Between April 2025, when its expedited licensing pathway took effect, and January, the province approved 1,028 US-trained nurses, according to the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives. By comparison, only 112 US applicants were approved in 2023 and 127 in 2024.

    Nursing organizations in Ontario and Alberta, along with the Canadian Nurses Association, also confirmed increased interest from American professionals.

    Angela Wignall, CEO of Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of British Columbia, said American nurses once moved north largely for personal reasons. More recently, however, she has encountered individuals expressing fears that the White House’s rhetoric could embolden violence and vigilantism, particularly against families with same-sex couples.

    "Some of them were living in fear of the administration, and they shared a sense of relief when crossing the border," Wignall said. "As a Canadian, it's heartbreaking. And also a joy to welcome them."

    Vancouver Island as a destination

    Vancouver Island, home to roughly 860,000 residents, has gained 64 US-trained nurses since April, including hires at Nanaimo Regional, according to Andrew Leyne, a spokesperson for the regional health authority.

    Among them is Susan Fleishman, a Canadian who moved to the United States as a child and spent 23 years working in American emergency rooms before returning to Canada in November.

    Fleishman said divisive rhetoric from President Trump had fueled anger and deepened polarization in American society.

    "It wasn't an easy move — that's for sure. But I think it's definitely worth it," she said. "I find there is a lot more kindness here. And I think that will keep me here."

    Brandy Frye, another veteran ER nurse, relocated to Vancouver Island last year after monitoring Canada’s political landscape, including Mark Carney’s rise to prime minister, a development widely interpreted as a rejection of Trump-style politics.

    Frye said her former California hospital had begun removing references to diversity and equity from official documents to align with the Trump administration’s priorities, a change she found troubling.

    "It felt like a step against everything I believe in," Frye said. "And I didn't feel like I belonged there anymore."

    Grassroots recruitment efforts

    For many American nurses now on Vancouver Island, the initial spark came from a viral tourism video.

    About a year ago, Tod Maffin, a social media creator and former CBC Radio host, organized a weekend event in Nanaimo aimed at offsetting the economic effects of President Trump’s tariffs. Roughly 350 Americans attended in April.

    "A lot of them were health care workers looking for an escape route," Maffin said. "They were there to help support our economy, but also to look into Canada."

    Seeing potential, Maffin converted the event website into a recruitment platform and created a Discord channel to assist Americans exploring relocation.

    He estimates the initiative helped approximately 35 health care workers move to Vancouver Island. Volunteers in more than 30 other Canadian communities have since replicated the model in hopes of attracting American nurses and doctors to their regions.

    A truly AWFUL situation; last week Border Patrol dropped a “nearly blind” Burmese refugee off in front of a random donut shop in Buffalo, five miles from his house.

    He was just found dead, having never made it home.

    ICE shoot pepper spray into moving car in busy traffic—hit U.S. citizen driving & her 3 kids.

    New bodycam footage clearly show agents lied claiming family was "impeding."

    "My eyes were burning, I had crying kids... How did I manage to drive?" mom said. "It's assault on minors."

    Video shows 2 agents drive up alongside the moving car—then pepper spray the 3 young girls ages 18, 15 & 11.

    ICE vehicle then turned on its police lights and sped away fleeing the scene

    The incident occurred while driving home from shopping at Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio.

    I'm not sure that nurse flight corresponds to turmoil, but I do notice a propaganda factory attached to it.

    American ones are the finest -- based on what? It's just jingoism.

    Robust or paid more -- just earmarks the economy as more expensive. Other places you could live on half as much and get twice the value.

    The shortage -- is that because the population is falling apart? Seeking a groundswell of the young to take care of the old, which is non-productive. Or, perhaps because even younger segments of society are half destroyed, requiring, something, in order to mentally or physically pretend to be halfway normal. I mean, if you look at the "general public" anywhere around here, you don't want to...something is generally wrong or unhealthy, observable from a distance, which I do not notice elsewhere.

    With respect to the tactics there is no protection from, note that a class action lawsuit against ICE from 2018 on juvenile to adult transfers is still in force, and today there are new ones:

    Domestic Terrorism, that this meaningless excuse cannot be used as grounds to...anything.

    Warrantless Arrests, meaning this is not federal territory and they cannot violate the Constitution.

    As people become aware of this, then, it will be easy to reach out and get your piece of the pie. Let some little incident happen, and plunder the department for millions. If you can get three million in damages -- because nursing care is so phenomenally expensive -- a few thousand of these and the government will be bled dry.

    This is something attorneys are sure to swarm, probably making it easier. Until the whole thing gets axed, this is a stopgap measure.

    Agents reportedly claimed the shop was open. It wasn’t.

    They did not notify his family. They did not notify his lawyer.

    Five days later, he was dead.

    This comes after their locations were released and the devices were promptly destroyed.

    📌 Data from the Deportation Data Project reveals that the Ecuadorian community in #NewYork was the most affected by the immigration crackdown promoted by Donald Trump's administration. In the first 10 months of the period, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 5,174 people in the city, of whom 1,224 were Ecuadorians, representing 24%.

    According to figures compiled by independent organizations, only 16% of the Ecuadorians detained had a previous criminal conviction. This data is raising alarms among community and human rights organizations.

    Deportations of Ecuadorians continue, while the situation in #Ecuador is marked by violence, economic crisis, and political tensions, according to human rights organizations.

    Yes. I posted this on 8 February:

    ~~~
    Last week I met an Ecuadorian man at my mechanic's workshop. Like me, he was waiting for a small thing to be done to his car.
    He was about 40, was neat and well-dressed, and spoke excellent English. He was very polite, and I asked him where he'd learned to speak it so well.
    He told me he'd been working in New York for 4 years, there with a 100% legal Green Card. But suddenly his Green Card had been canceled (which I didn't think was possible), and a few weeks ago he was deported back to Ecuador. He was very philosophical about it. There had been nothing he could do.
    Here is the strange crunch of a Sheriff who had been taking millions under a contract to do ICE detention for a few years, typically holding inmates up to about 45 days, until giving it the boot late last year when they were jacked up to process several dozen a day.
    This is a typical Republican Sheriff who agrees with it on the principle of catching violent offenders. But this has been blown off the scale, of course, by looser requirements about bringing someone in.
    While alienating this support base:
    Quote Johnson cited Iryna’s Law in his November letter to ICE, informing the agency that Alamance County would no longer hold immigrant detainees under the old contract. (State law requires the jail to temporarily hold people for whom ICE has issued a detainer request.) He wrote that the law’s provisions would “materially affect our ability to manage classification, housing, and supervision of detainees in our facility and will require us to prioritize bed space and resources for local and state inmates in order to remain in compliance with state law and court directives.”
    This came about because a Ukrainian refugee was violently murdered in front of a metro surveillance camera.
    Republicans blamed the Magistrate who had released the offender from a prior incident. He had a criminal history without having really hurt anyone yet. And so there were plenty of opportunities to deal with him when for instance he kept calling 911:
    Quote “Why don’t [Republicans] address a cop responding to an obvious mental health issue?” Morey asked. “Why don’t the cops do what [Republicans are] asking the magistrates to do?”
    The Magistrate had no guidelines for holding the guy.
    Usually, Republican districts actually have a higher crime rate.
    For the legislation that came out of it:
    Quote “This is such a knee-jerk reaction to a high-profile case,” a longtime judicial official told The Assembly. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity. “I hope they’re going to provide a tremendous amount of money to counties to build jails. This is going to fill up the jails. This is going to be another unfunded mandate.”
    According to the Idiot:
    Quote ...the “blood of this innocent woman” is “on the hands of the Democrats who refuse to put bad people in jail, including Former Disgraced Governor and ‘Wannabe Senator’ Roy Cooper.”
    The guy who did it said it was on "the material".
    But, we need to blame the Democrats, whatever happens, we need to blame them.
    Quote This claim collapses under scrutiny.
    Cooper released 3,500 nonviolent offenders in 2021 to settle a lawsuit over COVID-19 conditions in state prisons. But the settlement had nothing to do with the release of Decarlos Brown Jr., Zarutska’s alleged murderer, from the Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution in September 2020. Nor was Brown freed because of the executive order that Whatley cited, which established a task force to study racial disparities in the justice issues in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.
    He was released because he served the sentence.
    I would guess he was institutionalized, in the sense that he knew if he killed someone, an institution would take care of him.
    Then if you press the death penalty, what does that cost the taxpayers.
    Everything is already short-staffed, there aren't resources to go around rounding everyone up under a suspicion.
    No one even looked at the fact this guy probably had no opportunity and no support, and probably lived on the streets a lot. This is the environment we have created. The Federal response is not in touch, is a Gestapo syndrome.
    🚨BREAKING: DHS agents are now illegally arresting U.S. citizens at airports… and trafficking them across state lines.
    A 28-year-old U.S. citizen, Sunny Naqvi, was detained by DHS, for 43 hours, after landing at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
    She wasn’t charged with a crime, and she wasn’t accused of doing anything illegal…
    Agents reportedly detained her over what they called a “curious travel history.”
    Even though Sunny was born in Illinois…they still disappeared her.
    After being held for about 30 hours inside the airport, agents secretly moved Sunny to an ICE detention facility in Broadview, Illinois.
    While this was happening, federal agents repeatedly told her family she was NOT in custody, even though her phone location showed she was inside the facility.
    Then it gets worse.
    According to witnesses, agents asked for Sunny’s phone number so they could “look for her phone.”
    Minutes later, the phone was opened, her messages were read, and the device was shut off, cutting off the family’s ability to track her.
    After that, agents transported the U.S. citizen across state lines, to another detention facility in Dodge County, Wisconsin.
    And then she was eventually released early Saturday morning… in a random state, alone.
    Her phone was dead, and she had no transportation.
    So, a U.S. citizen detained by the federal government had to hitchhike to a hotel, just to be able to reunite with her family.
    And this is what people need to understand…
    When federal agents can detain U.S. citizens without charges… lie to families about their custody, search personal phones, and secretly transport people across state lines…
    That puts every single American in danger.
    Because they can do it to anyone.
    Blackstone has been active in the single-family home market, recently announcing plans to acquire significant portfolios, including a $6 billion deal for Home Partners of America and a $3.5 billion acquisition of Tricon Residential. These moves position Blackstone as one of the largest institutional landlords in the U.S. housing market.
    🚨 BREAKING: BlackRock just quietly filed to acquire $22 BILLION in single family homes across 14 states.
    That's ~47,000 homes that will NEVER be available for normal Americans to buy.
    Meanwhile, homeownership rates for Americans under 40 just hit an all-time LOW.
    You will own nothing.
    And they're not even hiding it anymore.
    Qasim Rashid, Esq.
    The United States: The land where Michigan Judge Gregory Ross awarded custody to a convicted child rapist named Christopher Mirasolo.
    Mirasolo raped and impregnated a 12-year-old child, who was then forced to carry to term. Some 8 years later, Ross awarded Mirasolo joint legal custody. This is the state of women and girls in the USA—where a man can rape and impregnate a child, then the law can force her to have the baby, and then a judge can force her to share joint custody with her rapist.
    The people defending this atrocity are the ones telling us we have to invade Iran to liberate its women and given them the same rights as American women. Incredible.
    I never thought I would have the 'draft' conversation with my 21 y.o. daughter who is 3 months away from graduating university as a RN.
    If any of you have children around the draft age category, my heart goes out to you.
    Copied from the Obituaries thread, where it was reported yesterday that 'Country' Joe McDonald has just died.
    Your daughter may never have heard this. Play it for her now.
