One question comes to my mind is:

Are we going to get past 2017 anyways Doh!

do we believe that we already have the means to stop it, I do!
    What is happening in 2017?

No I dont believe we have the means to stop it at this point. Maybe when it comes closer to the date we will, but lets hope they've been working on stopping it. This is a civilaztion killer and headed our way. Can you even image when it would look like flying past us in such a close distance? It'll be a world event the day it passes us for those that can view it....and lets hope thats what it does....fly past us.

Stargate SG-1 predicted/revealed this scenario/prediction in episode 5x17 'Fail Safe'

Quote An amateur astronomer discovers a rogue asteroid on a collision course with Earth. SG-1 and a couple of engineers repair the cargoship that crashed on Revanna and head for earth. Just before they reach the asteroid, there is a problem with one of the engines. They start heading for the asteroid, but manage to stop at the last moment. Teal'c and O'Neill place a naqahdah enhanced nuclear weapon. Carter discovers that the core of the asteroid is composed of naqahdah, so exploding the nuke would destroy Earth. They manage to use the ship's hyperspace engines to transfer the asteroid to the other side of earth.

...Then, the world will see “at least five years or more of extraordinary peace” before the asteroid.
That could be Apophis, which really is a risk, and is scheduled for a very close fly-by in 2029 (and a similar close fly-by when it returns in 2036). It's been watched very intently for several years.

The risk of impact in 2029 has been calculated at 2.7%, which in astronomical terms is a little too high for comfort, given that it's nearly half a kilometer wide and weighs 67 million tons, traveling at 28,000 mph. An impact would create an 880 megaton explosion, even if it hit the ocean.

The issue is complicated because it's possible that if the fly-by in 2029 happens in just a certain way, then the Earth's gravitational field would alter its orbit very slightly so that it really would hit in 2036. (By then, though, we'd have to assume there'd be ways to deflect it from direct impact. Watch this space. )

I always wondered where Elon Musk's mad dash to Mars came from... maybe he's tracking this and decided todo something about it?

I mean, the time lines line up well, Musk imagines have will be large scale unmanned Mars missions by 2024, at that place we could have a semblance of multiplanitary species by 2036.

Tom Horn's take on Apophis. And today the FOX NEWS Headline is
Quote NASA launches mission to intercept ‘God of Chaos’ asteroid before it scratches Earth's orbit
Could NASA be doing a coverup with a news headline to explain why they are sending a spacecraft?

I've read in multiple places that Billy Meiers folks have been worried about Apophis hitting earth in 2029 since the seventies.
