I know I'm stretching the intention of this thread by posting this 2 min 44 sec video here, but I feel sure the audience here, members and non members, are the right audience to see it.

Iota first posted it here in the video memes thread last year. I don't think many people saw it. When I saw it, it hit me like a 2X4 and I'm sure others will be similarly impressed. It deserves a massive audience.

If the number 144,000 doesn't mean much to you, there are religious fraternities who make a very big deal out it, and have high expectations about it. In very basic simple terms, it's seen as the number of cherry picked god's people.

The Dalai Lama has apologised after he faced allegations of inappropriate behaviour after kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to “suck his tongue” at a public event in India.

The interaction, which took place in late February at the Dalai Lama’s temple in Dharamshala, was attended by about 100 young students who had just graduated from the Indian M3M Foundation.

The Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the holiest figure in Tibetan Buddhism and has lived in exile in India since 1959, when Tibet was annexed by China.

In a video that has gone viral, one of the young male students approached a microphone at the event and asked the Dalai Lama: “Can I hug you?”

The Dalai Lama, 87, told the boy to come up to the platform where he was seated. Motioning to his cheek, he is heard saying “first here”, after which the child kissed him and gave him a hug.

The Dalai Lama kept hold of the boy, saying “I think here also” and then planted a kiss on his lips. “And suck my tongue,” the Dalai Lama then said, sticking out his tongue, forehead to forehead with the student. The boy quickly stuck out his own tongue and went to move away while the Dalai Lama laughed and pulled the boy in for another hug, as the audience laughed.

The spiritual leader then spoke to the boy, advising him to look to those who create “peace and happiness” and not to follow “human beings who always kill other people”, before giving him a final hug.

As the video spread across the internet it was condemned by many, who called it “inappropriate”, “scandalous” and “disgusting”. The controversy prompted an apology from the office of the Dalai Lama, who said his behaviour had been “innocent and playful”.

It said in a statement: “His holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.

“His holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”

The Dalai Lama has faced previous controversies. In 2019 he caused an outcry after suggesting that if the Dalai Lama returned as a woman “she should be more attractive”, for which his office apologised

In the rush to cast stones from a narrow cultural perspective is it worth taking a moment to pause and reflect on the cultural differences that are all too often misinterpreted?

I don't know, maybe he is just a sick individual like all the catholic priests that we've heard about. I never met one (priest) that tried to do anything to me other than accept the doctrine as the one true path. That doesn't mean all the stories are bullsh1t, they're all too easy to believe. As to the Dalai Lama apologising, I think you will find that was the press office kowtowing to the cancel culture brigade. It should all be very familiar to us by now.

Please see this post and at least think upon it. Yes it looks bad - from our perspective. Personally I'm on the same page as this post.

We all know power corrupts, that is something the world could probably agree upon. Sometimes this place reflects social media a little bit too closely for my personal comfort.

I think that in this case Dalai Lama is so far removed from normal people that he doesn't understand why this would be offensive. Sometimes when people are do-gooders it's hard for them to conceive bad because it's far removed from their thoughts and actions. Like when people move from a nice area to a rougher one and leave the doors unlocked.

If he was a creepy dude he wouldn't be doing this in front of tons of people with cameras and giggling. He was being silly. He meant no harm. That being said there needs to be someone in his 'crew' who is a little more aware of these things.

That being said, cultures being different doesn't mean any particular culture or practice gets a 'get out of jail free' card.

I lost my beautiful far infrared sauna as a result of a fire last year and researched saunas to replace it. I discovered Josh Trent’s Sauna Space website and ended up ordering his special near infrared lights. Unfortunately, my house hasn’t been reconstructed, so I’ve only been able to use the single bulb unit (no sauna yet, alas), which I really really like.

For anyone interested in saunas and/or the effects of light on our bodies, this interview with Josh Trent is for you. The title, “Light As Medicine: Treating Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) For Depression/Anxiety,” doesn’t do it justice--it’s about much more than SAD. I’ve always been captivated and enthralled by good magic and magicians. Jugglers too.

If I may be permitted to digress, I had an English professor, James Reinhart, who was a world class juggler. Toured Europe and other countries in the 1960s or so. He did an act while in class at the end of the semester for us. Wow.

I came across a video of him in England I believe on youtube. I was trying to find him. Finally did when I looked for videos of WC Fields, the American depression era actor. ( He too was a great juggler.)

The post-9/11 War on Terror may have caused at least 4.5 million deaths in around half a dozen countries, according to a report published Monday by the preeminent academic institution studying the costs, casualties, and consequences of a war in which U.S. bombs and bullets are still killing and wounding people in multiple nations.

The new report from the Costs of War Project at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs shows “how death outlives war” by examining people killed indirectly by the War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen.

I internally debated starting a new thread - "The Covid Profiteers" - but a quick search for titles with Covid in them revealed there are an astonishing 184 threads on PA already concerning that odd occurence in human history. I figured enough was enough.

So, not worthy of a thread, a report from The Guardian in the UK entitled "The billionaires have won" reveals...

A pub landlord company owned by billionaire Tory donors has been accused of pushing pubs into bankruptcy after demanding tenants pay full rent owed from the months during the Covid lockdowns.

The Wellington Pub Company, owned by David and Simon Reuben, offered its estimated 850 tenants a Covid discount on condition that they extended their leases for five years.

To take on Wellington, about 250 tenants formed a pressure group led by Nick Holden and Kate Ahrens of the Geese and Fountain pub in Croxton Kerrial near Grantham in Lincolnshire. These tenants refused the company’s deal, and arbitrators have now ruled that many of them will have to pay rent in full.

I am in the smoky, smoggy metropolitan New Jersey area. Yesterday, a friend who watches the news a lot and is an alarmist (which was especially annoying when COVID broke out) told me I had to stay in my home for the next few days because of the horrible air coming from the Canadian fires. I rolled my eyes, but noticed that it was getting particularly smoggy outside. This morning I could barely see the "mountains" (500 feet high) that were two miles away and texted with a friend in Montreal which is much closer to the fires. We both thought it was uncanny BUT decided that this was like just another day in Los Angeles when they are hit by smog.

A few hours later, I look out the window and could no longer see the "mountains." I live in a high rise on a hill and have quite a panoramic vista, and buildings half a mile away are barely visible. Tried to take a picture to show the dirty brown color everything is, but it came out looking grey, like we are in dense fog. At 1 PM in the afternoon there is less light than we usually get at sunset and even with my windows closed, my apartment smells like there were cigarette smokers here, or maybe like someone had been smoking meats here.

My alarmist friend just texted me that breathing the air out side is like smoking six packs of cigarettes a day.

I have to wonder if I have any neighbors are worried about the ten days of darkness.
