SpaceX launched a high-altitude Starship prototype rocket and successfully landed it for the first time on Wednesday, overcoming a key challenge in Elon Musk’s whirlwind quest to build a fully reusable Mars rocket. Musk has said the SN15 rocket contained “hundreds of design improvements” over past high-altitude prototypes, which were all destroyed during explosive landing attempts.

Study Calls on US to Change How It Buys Space Technology, Reduce Congestion in Low Orbits

WASHINGTON — The Center for the Study of the Presidency & Congress released a new report May 4 calling on the US government to accelerate the procurement of commercial space technologies and manage growing congestion in low-Earth orbit.

CSPC is a nonpartisan think tank led by former members of Congress Mike Rogers, of Michigan; and Glenn Nye, of Virginia. In a 2019 report the group called out DoD for not opening up opportunities for emerging commercial space companies, and was especially critical of the national security space launch program. Many of the same points were made in the 2021 report.

“If the Space Force does not address the underlying issue of acquisition reform, America will lose its competitive edge in space. The commercial space sector has radically reshaped the way countries and companies access space, yet the old model of block-buys, multi-year contracts, and nearly bespoke vehicles remains,” said the CSPC study.

How Maxwell’s Demon Continues to Startle Scientists


The universe bets on disorder. Imagine, for example, dropping a thimbleful of red dye into a swimming pool. All of those dye molecules are going to slowly spread throughout the water. Physicists quantify this tendency to spread by counting the number of possible ways the dye molecules can be arranged. There’s one possible state where the molecules are crowded into the thimble. There’s another where, say, the molecules settle in a tidy clump at the pool’s bottom. But there are uncountable billions of permutations where the molecules spread out in different ways throughout the water. If the universe chooses from all the possible states at random, you can bet that it’s going to end up with one of the vast set of disordered possibilities.

Seen in this way, the inexorable rise in entropy, or disorder, as quantified by the second law of thermodynamics, takes on an almost mathematical certainty. So of course physicists are constantly trying to break it.

One almost did. A thought experiment devised by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell in 1867 stumped scientists for 115 years. And even after a solution was found, physicists have continued to use “Maxwell’s demon” to push the laws of the universe to their limits ...

Multiple water rescues were required across Homewood, Alabama this afternoon in Birmingham. Cars were floating and residents had to be rescued along Shades Creek at Rue Maison at the Crescent Apartments. Numerous roads were flooded in the area with a landslide and mid flow along HWY-31 in Vestavia. Patton Creek also eclipsed it's banks in the area.

LYRID Meteor Shower 2021 - Lyriden Sternschnuppen

Der Meteorschauer der Lyriden erreicht am 22. April seinen Höhepunkt. Unter optimalen Bedingungen sind dann etwa 18 Sternschnuppen pro Stunde zu sehen. Dieses Jahr stört aber das Licht des hellen Mondes die Beobachtung. An meinem Standort im Landkreis Oldenburg störte zudem die starke Bewölkung. Aber es klarte zwischendurch zum Glück immer mal wieder soweit auf, dass ich wenigstens ein paar Meteore sehen konnte. Außerdem zeigte sich ein Halo um den Mond. Dieser ensteht, wenn das Licht des Mondes auf Eiskristalle trifft.
