“The delightful Dark Doodad Nebula drifts through southern skies, a tantalizing target for binoculars toward the small constellation Musca, The Fly! The dusty cosmic cloud is seen against rich starfields just south of the Coalsack Nebula and the Southern Cross! Stretching for about 3 degrees across the center of this telephoto field of view, the Dark Doodad is punctuated near its southern tip (upper right) by yellowish globular star cluster NGC 4372! Of course, NGC 4372 roams the halo of our Milky Way Galaxy, a background object some 20,000 light-years away and only by chance along our line-of-sight to the Dark Doodad! The Doodad is around 700 light-years distant and over 30 light-years long!

The nebula was catalogued by Aage Sandqvist, astronomer at Stockholm Observatory, in 1977, but its better known alliterative moniker was first coined by astro-imager and writer Dennis di Cicco in 1986 while observing Comet Halley from the Australian outback! The late astronomer Steven Coe gave it the name Sandqvist 149, because he believed it should be named after the astronomer who found it, though even he acknowledged that the popular term prevails! When archaeologists assembled the pieces of an ancient stone artifact discovered in a cave in Germany, it was pretty clear what they’d found. Known as the Hohle Fels phallus, this prehistoric tool dates back 28,000 years and has come to be known popularly as the world’s oldest dildo.

The reconstruction of the so-called dildo by archaeologists from the University of Tübingen was finally announced at a press conference in 2005 after 14 stone fragments were excavated at the Hohle Fels cave in southern Germany. The resulting artifact measured an adequate 20 centimeters (8 in) long and 3 cm (1.2 in) wide.

Described as being smooth and “hard as, well, a rock” in the Huffington Post, this life-sized representation of a phallus was probably used as a sex toy during the Ice Age. “It's highly polished; it's clearly recognizable," the University's Professor Conard said to the BBC.
