Where are all of these meteors coming from? In terms of direction on the sky, the pointed answer is the constellation of Gemini. That is why the major meteor shower in December is known as the Geminids -- because shower meteors all appear to come from a radiant toward Gemini. Three dimensionally, however, sand-sized debris expelled from the unusual asteroid 3200 Phaethon follows a well-defined orbit about our Sun, and the part of the orbit that approaches Earth is superposed in front of the constellation of Gemini. Therefore, when Earth crosses this orbit, the radiant point of falling debris appears in Gemini.

Whilst out at sea, an unusual object was seen in the sky and was monitored by naval officers. Sometime later, there was a commotion on board when crewmen reported seeing an unfamiliar gentleman dressed in overalls who warned them that there would be an explosion from their engine, before vanishing. On inspection, the mystery visitor was correct. A significant fuel leak was detected which if not located would have resulted in one of the worst explosions in naval history.

Are Zebras White With Black Stripes or Black With White Stripes?





Zebras are iconic for their distinctive coats, but have you ever wondered whether zebras are white with black stripes or black with white stripes?

The stunning black-and-white coloration of the zebra's hide stands out in stark contrast with the dry, brown-and-green, treeless grasslands and savannah woodlands of their home territories of East and southern Africa, according to the African Wildlife Foundation. 

These stripes are unique to each individual. There are three zebra species living today — the plains zebra (Equus quagga), the mountain zebra (E. zebra) and the Grevy's zebra (E. grevyi) — and each species has a different striping pattern. For some, the darker portions of their hide are black, whereas others have browner coloring, and some have stripes only on their bodies but not on their legs.

Although zebras have black skin, different developmental processes determine their fur color, just like a light-skinned person can have dark hair, said Tim Caro, a behavioral and evolutionary ecologist/conservation biologist at the University of California, Davis. In fact, zebras actually have more light-colored hair than dark — their bellies are usually light — so it may seem that zebras are white with black stripes.

But that's not the case.

The production of melanin from melanocytes is "prevented during the development of a white hair, but not of a black hair," Caro told Live Science in an email. In other words, for zebras, the animals' default state is to produce black hair, making them black with white stripes.

Something Weird Is Happening on the Dark Side of the Moon

When we look at the Moon, we only see its one side. The other lunar hemisphere, known as the far side, or the dark side of the Moon, is always hidden from us.

In 1969, the Apollo 10 astronauts heard something unusual on the far side of the Moon. Apollo 10 lost contact with the mission control and started receiving a mysterious radio signal. This signal could not be from the Earth because Apollo was on the far side of the Moon, and no one on the planet could see or contact them. The astronauts heard the spooky sounds for about an hour until they emerged to the side of the Moon facing the Earth. However, the astronauts did not report this to the mission control because they thought they would be grounded on mental health issues.

For more than four decades, people believed that the mission went according to the plan. There was nothing weird about it. Then, finally, the incident came to light when the recorded transcripts were declassified. Now the question that everyone wanted an answer to was: What was there on the Moon's far side? Was someone really trying to contact the astronauts? What was the source of the unusual sounds?

There have been many sightings of unidentified flying objects, which were covered up in the past or were interpreted as natural phenomena, which led to the loss of a lot of evidence after the fact that. But when the same unidentified flying object is sighted again after about 50 years, it needs an explanation. The same very unusual unidentified flying object that appeared in Hillsdale, Michigan, in 1966, reappears nearly 50 years later, in Tengiz, Kazakhstan.

Space Agencies Offer Volunteers 11 Thousand Euros to Carry Out a Study



Research on the Incidence of Microgravity in Sleep

NASA and the German space agency Envihab Aerospace Medicine Research Center are looking for volunteers who will be paid 11 thousand euros to sleep. The goal is to study the consequences of microgravity environments during sleep cycles. Study participants must spend 59 days in a bed with 6 degrees of incline.

The requirements to participate are: being a man or woman between 24 and 55 years old, not having illnesses or being a smoker; between 1.53 and 1.90 meters tall, and speak German.

Want a Side Gig? People in China Will Pay You to Prove a Property is Not Haunted

Haunted properties are so difficult to sell in China that people are earning money staying at the place for a night.

It can be almost impossible to sell a property in Asia after it was home to an ‘unnatural death’, but, thankfully, a group of intrepid freelancers in China will make sure the place is not haunted — for a price. In China, a small industry of “haunted house testers” has developed who are hired by property agents, owners or potential buyers. They are typically paid one yuan per minute, and make about 1,440 yuan (US$220) for a 24-hour stay.

One haunted house tester, a retired soldier surnamed Zhang, said he knew of over a dozen other people who were taking on the job.

“Some of my friends say it is an easy job; sleep for one night and get the money. They asked me for help to get into the gig, but most of them were afraid. My friends quit after their first time,” said Mr Zhang.
