    The Sky This Week

Saturday, June 3: Full moon near Antares (all night)

When the nearly full moon clears rooftops towards the southeast in the late evening on Saturday, June 3, it will be shining several finger-widths to the lower left of Scorpius' brightest star, Antares. As the hours pass the moon's easterly orbital motion will carry it farther from reddish Antares and the diurnal motion of the sky will lift the moon higher than the star.

Saturday, June 3: Venus at greatest eastern elongation (after sunset)

On Saturday, June 3 and the following evening, Venus will officially be at its maximum separation of 45 degrees east of the sun for its current lengthy apparition.

Sunday, June 4: Full Strawberry Moon (at 11:42 p.m. EDT)

    https://www.space.com/16149-night-sky.html

The moon will officially reach its full phase at 03:42 GMT on Sunday, June 3, which converts to 11:42 p.m. EDT and 8:42 p.m. PDT on Saturday night. The June full moon, colloquially known as the Strawberry Moon, Mead Moon, Rose Moon, Birthing Moon, or Hot Moon, always shines in or near the stars of Sagittarius, the Archer.

The indigenous Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes region call this moon Ode'miin Giizis, the Strawberry Moon. For the Cree Nation it's Opiniyawiwipisim, the Egg Laying Moon (referring to the activities of wild water-fowl). The Mohawks call it Ohiarí:Ha, the Fruits are Small Moon. The Cherokee call it Tihaluhiyi, the Green Corn Moon, when crops are growing.

What if a Worst-Case Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) Hit Earth?

You’ve heard of a “perfect storm", but what about a "perfect solar storm"? A new study just published in the research journal Space Weather considers what might happen if a worst-case coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth. Spoiler alert: You might need a backup generator.

Unique Albino Panda Spotted in China

The world's first and only albino panda finally lumbered past a motion-sensitive field camera in the mountains of China earlier this year – the first time it's been spotted since 2019. Thankfully, the unique creature seems to be growing up happy and healthy in the Wolong National Nature Reserve, a protected region in the Sichuan province that is home to roughly 150 giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

But only this one is known to be white.

The albino panda's sex hasn't yet been determined, but researchers say it is almost the size of an adult now and shows signs of sexual maturity.

Even though it's the black sheep of the panda community, it seems to fit in just fine. In footage from February, recently aired by China's state broadcaster, the all-white panda was shown interacting with a mother panda and her roughly two-year-old cub as they nestled in the hollow of a tree.

Would You Lie in Bed for 2 Months for Human Space Exploration? These 12 People Will

    It won’t exactly be restful

If you want to experience the less glamorous side of space travel, try laying in bed for two months straight. Yes, seriously — a trip to space has very similar effects on your body to being bedridden.

Weakened bones, loss of muscle mass, and changes in blood flow are common when someone spends a prolonged period of time lying down. Such is the same when an astronaut lives in zero gravity. That’s why researchers use bed rest tests on Earth to better understand how spending time in space affects astronauts. Most recently, the European Space Agency announced a new experiment where 12 people will lie horizontally for 60 days. But they won’t exactly be resting. Participants will complete frequent exercise tests and be constantly monitored by experts.

The commitment to staying in bed means that participants will literally never get up, even to go to the bathroom or bathe. Their heads will be slightly reclined at a six-degree angle to mimic the lack of gravity that astronauts constantly experience off Earth.

But to counteract the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, participants will try cycling while lying down to get their blood flowing. The ESA notes that this will be the first bed rest test in Europe where researchers will determine if cycling can help counteract the negative effects of zero gravity.

Some will cycle while being spun around in a centrifuge to create artificial gravity. If spinning while cycling has a greater impact on preserving physiological health, then astronauts might use a similar setup on space missions in the future.

Meet the Scientist (sort of) Spending a Year on Mars

    Inside Mars Dune Alpha

Living on Mars wasn't exactly a childhood dream for Canadian biologist Kelly Haston, though she'll soon spend a year preparing for just that.

"We are just going to pretend that we're there," the 52-year-old told AFP, summing up her participation in an exercise simulating a long stay on the Red Planet.

At the end of June, she will be one of the four volunteers stepping into a Houston, Texas, Martian habitat (called Mars Dune Alpha) that will be their home for the next 12 months.

"It still sometimes seems a bit unreal to me," she laughs.

For NASA, which has carefully selected the participants, these long-term experiments make it possible to evaluate the behavior of a crew in an isolated and confined environment, ahead of a real mission in future.

Participants will face equipment failures and water limitations, the space agency has warned—as well as some "surprises," according to Haston.

Their communications with the outside world will suffer from the delays that exist between Earth and Mars—up to 20 minutes one-way, depending on the planets' positions—and 40 minutes two ways.

What worries the Canadian most is how she will manage being away from family. She'll only be able to keep in regular touch through email, and only rarely via videos, but never live. She'll miss being outside and getting to see mountains and the sea.

To cope, she plans to draw on her past experiences, such as a research expedition in Africa where she studied the genetic characteristics of frogs around Lake Victoria. She spent several months sleeping in cars and tents, without reliable cell phone coverage.

The crew will have to don their suits to do "spacewalks"—"probably one of the things that I'm looking forward to the most," says Haston, a registered member of the Mohawk Nation.

"I'm very excited about this, but I'm also realistic for what the challenge is."

I'm just listening to this now, Bluegreen. Interesting.
You know the technology already exists, right? According to Donald Marshall, they are already cloning ancient Egyptians.

I don't know whether that's true but I do know that they have been cloning people for decades already and their technology is so far advanced from anything that we ordinary people know that it's mind-boggling.

Watch: Ghost Filmed in Argentine Butcher Shop?

Bienvenidos a ALTOMISTERIO con MARCO BUSTAMANTE, el canal número 1 en Argentina en investigación del Fenómeno OVNI Extraterrestre, ciencia, tecnología, investigación espacial y cambio climático.

A puzzling piece of footage circulating online shows what appears to be a ghost exiting the back room of a butcher shop moments before a knife inexplicably falls from a table. The peculiar video was reportedly captured by a security camera in the city of Chaco and subsequently found its way onto TikTok. In the footage, which has gone viral on social media in Argentina, a dark figure can be seen quickly exiting the room as a butcher shop employee walks past a long metal table covered in meat. Suddenly, a knife falls from the floor as if it has been pushed by an unseen force, leaving a second employee baffled.

When the workers later looked at the security footage, they were surprised to see the mysterious stranger exiting the back room prior to when the knife tumbled from the table. Upon closer examination of the video, they were all the more bewildered when they noticed that the eerie figure appears to be transparent as only their upper body is visible in the video while the table can be clearly seen where their legs should be.

Mars in Colour as Never Seen Before

Exactly 20 years ago, on 2 June 2003, the Mars Express spacecraft, the first European mission to explore another planet in the Solar System, launched on a Soyuz launch vehicle from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. A Fregat upper stage delivered the mission on a transfer orbit to Mars, which the spacecraft reached on 25 December of the same year. The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), developed at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and operated by the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, is one of seven experiments on board.

The mission was originally only supposed to last one martian year (approximately two Earth years), but the success of the instruments, which continue to work flawlessly, has prompted the European Space Agency (ESA) to extend the mission again and again, most recently until the end of 2026. On 19 October 2023, Mars Express will have orbited Mars 25,000 times in its elliptical orbit. To mark the 20th anniversary of the launch, a celebration will take place today, 2 June, at ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt at the end of a scientific and technical symposium.

To acquire its usual surface images, the HRSC normally photographs Mars from an altitude of approximately 300 kilometres, at roughly the point in its elliptical orbit at which the Mars Express spacecraft is closest to the planet. The resulting views of the martian surface have a spatial resolution of up to 12.5 meters per pixel and cover areas approximately 50 kilometres wide. Thanks to its four colour channels (red, green, blue, infrared) and five panchromatic nadir, stereo and photometric channels, the stereo camera can visualise Mars in three dimensions and also in colour.

Yet the spectacle was just beginning. In a breathtaking display, the lights converged to form a distinct triangular pattern. As if choreographed by an unseen hand, they held this formation briefly before they gradually faded, their luminescence merging with the dark canvas of the night sky.

No sooner had the first triangle of lights disappeared than a second set began its ascent. Following the same vertical trajectory as the first, this group of lights echoed its predecessors in a captivating dance. They too coalesced into a triangle formation, leaving onlookers spellbound at this twice-performed aerial spectacle.
