Saturday, Sept. 23: September Equinox (at 2:50 a.m. EDT)

On Saturday, September 23 at 2:50 a.m. EDT or 06:50 GMT, the sun's apparent motion along the ecliptic will carry it across the celestial equator traveling southward, marking the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the beginning of autumn there. On the equinoxes in March and September, day and night are of equal length and the sun rises due east and sets due west.

Archaeologists Discover World's Oldest Wooden Structure

    Pre-dates Homo Sapiens

Half a million years ago, earlier than was previously thought possible, humans were building structures made of wood, according to new research by a team from the University of Liverpool and Aberystwyth University.

The research, published in the journal Nature, reports on the excavation of well-preserved wood at the archaeological site of Kalambo Falls, Zambia, dating back at least 476,000 years and predating the evolution of our own species, Homo sapiens.

Expert analysis of stone tool cut-marks on the wood show that these early humans shaped and joined two large logs to make a structure, probably the foundation of a platform or part of a dwelling.

This is the earliest evidence from anywhere in the world of the deliberate crafting of logs to fit together. Until now, evidence for the human use of wood was limited to its use for making fire, digging sticks and spears.

Wood is rarely found in such ancient sites as it usually rots and disappears, but at Kalambo Falls permanently high water levels preserved the wood.

This discovery challenges the prevailing view that Stone Age humans were nomadic. At Kalambo Falls these humans not only had a perennial source of water, but the forest around them provided enough food to enable them to settle and make structures.

Professor Larry Barham, from the University of Liverpool's Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, who leads the 'Deep Roots of Humanity' research project said: "This find has changed how I think about our early ancestors. Forget the label 'Stone Age,' look at what these people were doing: they made something new, and large, from wood. They used their intelligence, imagination, and skills to create something they'd never seen before, something that had never previously existed."

"It is unthinkable that hominins would not use wood, given its widespread nature," Shadreck Chirikure, a professor of archaeological science at the University of Oxford said. The new study shows that "humans and hominins used resources that were available to them." Chirikure suggested that the very early date of the notched logs "calls for a rethink" of how human cultural and biological evolution is understood.

    Earlier this year:

The Oldest Wooden Well in the World is 7,250 Years Old

This "wooden box" is one of the oldest wooden "structures" in the world and was once a well. It was found in the Czech Republic, where the first farmers in Europe built some wells with some oak wood. They earned the title of the oldest preserved wooden well construction in the world.

One of the first oak structures has been accurately dated thanks to the annual rings preserved in the wood.

The unique discovery was made by archaeologists last year in Ostrov in the Pardubice region, where seven wells from different prehistoric periods were found during excavations during the construction of the D35 road. In particular, "in the case of the well found in Chrudim, the results show that the trees used to build the well were felled between 5256-5255 B.C., and the corner posts of a tree boot felled in the fall or winter of 5259 B.C. or early winter of 5258 B.C.," said Michal Rybníček of the Department of Wood Science at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology at Mendel University in Brno. (In Cyprus, people were already building wells 10,500 years ago).

"It is remarkable that the first farmers, who had only tools made of stone, bone, horn or wood, were able to work felled tree trunks with absolute precision," he added.

    Neruda Crater

MESSENGER, a spacecraft that visited Mercury, took this image of the Neruda Crater, named for Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Pablo Neruda was born Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto on July 12, 1904. He began writing poems at the age of 13, and later became a poet-diplomat and politician who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. The space imagery in his poems inspired scientists to name a crater on Mercury in his honor. Neruda Crater is 70 miles (112 km) across.

The poet passed away September 23, 1973.

Quote Today the department launched a website on the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office to provide the public with information concerning AARO and its efforts to understand and resolve unidentified anomalous phenomena.

This website will provide information, including photos and videos, on resolved UAP cases as they are declassified and approved for public release.  The website's other content includes reporting trends and a frequently asked questions section as well as links to official reports, transcripts, press releases, and other resources that the public may find useful, such as applicable statutes and aircraft, balloon and satellite tracking sites.

This fall, consistent with Section 1673 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023, AARO will launch a secure reporting tool on the website to enable current and former U.S. government employees, service members, or contractors with direct knowledge of U.S. government programs or activities to contact AARO directly to make a report.

The department is committed to transparency with the American people on AARO's work on UAP.  This website will serve as a one-stop shop for all publicly available information related to AARO and UAP, and AARO will regularly update the website with its most recent activities and findings as new information is cleared for public release.

In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa by Ada Limón

Arching under the night sky inky

    with black expansiveness, we point

to the planets we know, we

pin quick wishes on stars. From earth,

we read the sky as if it is an unerring book

of the universe, expert and evident.

Still, there are mysteries below our sky:

the whale song, the songbird singing

its call in the bough of a wind-shaken tree.

We are creatures of constant awe,

curious at beauty, at leaf and blossom,

at grief and pleasure, sun and shadow.

And it is not darkness that unites us,

not the cold distance of space, but

the offering of water, each drop of rain,

each rivulet, each pulse, each vein.

O second moon, we, too, are made

of water, of vast and beckoning seas.

We, too, are made of wonders, of great

and ordinary loves, of small invisible worlds,

of a need to call out through the dark.

Massive Sun Outburst Smacks NASA Spacecraft

If it had hit Earth, this coronal mass ejection could have caused continent-scale blackouts, scientists say

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe was built to withstand the ravages of the environment near our sun—and with good reason.

The car-size spacecraft has now flown through a giant solar outburst of charged particles called a coronal mass ejection (CME). If that CME had it hit Earth instead, it may have caused vast, continent-wide blackouts, scientists say. Some of those searing particles whipped through space at about three million miles per hour.

The encounter occurred on the far side of the sun, relative to Earth. It began on September 5, 2022, and lasted nearly two full days, scientists detail in a new paper published in the Astrophysical Journal. At the time, the Parker Solar Probe was a mere 5.7 million miles from the sun’s surface. Researchers typically have to study the sun’s outbursts from our planet, which treks an average of 93 million miles away.

The CME in question was the sort of event that scientists would prefer not to be able to study from Earth; they want such large outbursts to stay far from our planet. That’s because CMEs, which send bubbles of charged particles shooting out through the solar system, can cause geomagnetic storms near Earth that interfere with key aspects of our lives—such as the GPS satellites we use to navigate or the power grids that run our homes and offices.

The most powerful geomagnetic storm on record, called the Carrington Event, occurred in 1859, when humans had far less infrastructure that was vulnerable to such storms. Still, the Carrington Event had impressive impacts on the telegraph network and even lit some equipment on fire.

Had the September 2022 CME headed toward Earth, it could have caused a geomagnetic storm of about the same magnitude as the Carrington Event, said a Parker Solar Probe scientist in a recent Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory press release. Today if such a storm were to hit with no warning, it could cause blackouts spanning entire continents.

Fear of such a large, Earth-directed event was part of the inspiration for the Parker Solar Probe mission. NASA hoped the mission would shed light on enduring mysteries of the sun’s activity, such as how charged particles in the solar wind that constantly flows off the sun reach such high speeds and why the sun’s atmosphere—the corona—is so incredibly hot, much hotter than the star’s surface. By better understanding how the sun works, the theory goes, scientists should be better able to predict massive outbursts, giving Earthlings time to prepare for the storms.

Close Encounter With a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection)

On Sept. 5, 2022, NASA's Parker Solar Probe was about to make its 13th close approach to the Sun when a coronal mass ejection (CME) -- a powerful explosion of magnetic fields and plasma -- erupted right in front of it. The Sun is depicted off to the left in the video. In all, Parker spent roughly two days observing the CME, becoming the first spacecraft ever to fly through a powerful solar explosion near the Sun. The information collected provides researchers with an unparalleled view into these stellar events.

More triangles of various sizes. In his interview with Bill Ryan Charles said many tr3b triangle craft could interlock to be operated as one craft, which he said is why we always see triangle craft of vastly different sizes.

The OSIRIS-REx Capsule Has Landed - First Asteroid Samples Returned to Earth

The OSIRIS-REx mission has just completed NASA’s first sample-return mission from the near-Earth asteroid, Bennu. The samples arrived at the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) near Salt Lake City, where a team of engineers arrived by helicopter to retrieve the sample capsule. The samples will be curated by NASA’s Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate (ARES) and Japan’s Extraterrestrial Sample Curation Center (ESCuC). Analysis of the rocks and dust obtained from Bennu is expected to provide new insight into the formation and evolution of the Solar System.

Dr. James B. Garvin, the Chief Scientist at NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center, expressed excitement about the successful return of the samples and the mission in general:

“I’m over the asteroid!” he said. “It’s a masterpiece of engineering we have here. Just think about this. In fifty years, we’ve gone from bringing things on the Moon back with crews to all-robotic sample return for science that’s … literally beyond words. It’s sublime. So we cannot wait to see what we’re going to learn.”

NASA Director Bill Nelson delivered his congratulations to the OSIRIS-REx team for their efforts:

“You did it. You designed it, you built it, and you carried out a first mission to collect a sample from an asteroid. And after a two-year journey, it has touched down at the Utah Desert. It brought something extraordinary: the largest asteroid sample ever received on Earth. It’s going to help scientists investigate planet formation. It’s going to improve our understanding of asteroids that could possibly impact the Earth, and it will deepen our understanding of the origin of our Solar System and its formation. This mission proves that NASA does big things. Things that inspire us, things that unite us, things that show that nothing is beyond reach.”
