M43: Streams of Orion





Where do the dark streams of dust in the Orion Nebula originate? This part of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, M43, is the often imaged but rarely mentioned neighbor of the more famous M42. M42, seen in part to the upper right, includes many bright stars from the Trapezium star cluster. M43 is itself a star forming region that displays intricately-laced streams of dark dust -- although it is really composed mostly of glowing hydrogen gas. The entire Orion field is located about 1600 light years away. Opaque to visible light, the picturesque dark dust is created in the outer atmosphere of massive cool stars and expelled by strong outer winds of protons and electrons.

Paying for Services: Illicit Brothel Coins of Pompeii Show What’s on The Menu





In ancient Rome, brothels were somewhat of a staple, particularly in vacation cities like Pompeii and Herculaneum. These staples eventually grew to encourage their own form of coinage, called spintriae in the Medieval period. The prevalence of prostitution in Roman culture is highlighted through the wide circulation of these coins, and the plethora of imagery in the aforementioned sites in southern Italy.

One of the most prominent theories about the creation and purpose of the coins was to advertise the prices of sexual acts. Further, in passing a coin between two people—i.e., the buyer and the “seller”—one could maintain a level of privacy. This would have been particularly important to those of high status who did not want their late night dalliances known. It is believed by some scholars that “the sex act depicted on each coin corresponds to the price listed on the opposite face,” which has also been considered clever as it is “a system that would also have helped dissolve language barriers”.





Prostitution was far more of an acceptable “career choice” (it wasn’t necessarily a choice) in ancient Rome than many believe; the current stigma of prostitution has damaged the reputation of what many consider the oldest occupation in history. Roman historians Livy, whose History of Rome is comprehensive, and Tacitus, credited as one of the better surviving sources of Roman culture and war, both dictate that prostitutes often had positive reputations, and often came from good families.

Emperor Augustus encouraged the occupation, making it “neither illegal nor stigmatized in ancient Rome, and in fact it was not unusual for an independent-minded upper-class woman to become a courtesan; when Augustus decided to encourage reproduction in the upper classes by taxing unmarried adult patricians, many women registered as whores so as to avoid being forced to marry.”

NASA is a taking page out of the action flick “Armageddon” – by launching a spaceship to wallop an asteroid Didymos moon in a test to deflect a space rock threatening our planet. The space agency’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test, or DART, is set to lift off at 1:20 a.m. EST on Nov. 24 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Touchable holograms could soon be a reality. Researchers at the University of Glasgow have created hologram technology using air jets, called “aerohaptics,” that you can feel. Now that they’ve achieved touch, they are considering adding temperature control to the program so that the projected “objects” will feel cold or hot, like their real-world counterparts. They may even incorporate fragrances.


Mind-Blowing Holograms Are Replacing Circus Animals





The circus has been a source of entertainment for generations with clowns, extreme acrobatics, and controversial wild animals. But one German circus is finding new ways to maintain tradition while also saying goodbye to the animal acts.

Circus Roncalli is using giant holograms to keep elephants, horses, and even goldfish under the Big Top, without keeping circus animals captive. The 3D circus animals appear because of eleven laser projectors that beam imagery onto a thin screen circling the ring. They are visible to audience members sitting in any location around the performance. Viewers can even see an elephant raise its hind legs into the air to do a handstand, without using prodding devices like bullhooks or goads.

Something Large Just Smashed Into Jupiter

Poor old Jupiter. It's just hanging out there, being a gas giant, shepherding trojans, minding its own business, and boom. Smacked upside the head by a stray space rock.

What is unusual is that someone happens to be looking and filming at just the right time - and this month, that happened, with sky-watchers around the globe catching an explosion in the planet's upper atmosphere. On 13 September 2021, at 22:39 UT, amateur astronomers recorded the bright flash of what appeared to be a Jupiter impact - namely Harald Paleske from Germany, who was recording the shadow of Io as it passed in front of the planet, and José Luis Pereira from Brazil.




The white spot that appears on the left is the impact. The black spot on the right is the shadow of the satellite Io. The faint white spot on the right (out of the surface) is Io.

Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc) is a 1900 French silent film directed by Georges Méliès, based on the life of Joan of Arc. The film was believed lost until 1982, when a hand-colored print with the first scene missing was discovered by the collector René Charles.

In the village of Domrémy, the young Joan is visited by Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, who exhort her to fight for her country. Her father Jacques d'Arc, mother Isabelle Romée, and uncle beg her to stay at home, but she leaves them and travels to Vaucouleurs, where she meets with the governor, Captain Robert de Baudricourt. The dissipated Baudricourt initially scorns Joan's ideals, but her zeal eventually wins him over, and he gives her authority to lead French soldiers. Joan and her army lead a triumphal procession into Orléans, followed by a large crowd. Then, in Reims Cathedral, Charles VII is crowned King of France. An historical fact to this day, Joan of Arc is the youngest person ever named to lead a country's military.
