Voyager 1 & 2's Trejectory & Current Position In Space

In 1977, NASA's twin Voyager spacecraft embarked on an incredible journey to the outer planets and beyond. After delivering stunning images of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the probes sailed on to study the boundary of our heliosphere, the bubble that encompasses our sun, planets and solar wind. Voyager 1 crossed that frontier in August 2012, becoming the first human-made object in interstellar space, while Voyager 2 is expected to enter the space between the stars in the coming years. This live public talk at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, revisits highlights of the last 40 years and discuss what may lie ahead for the intrepid Voyagers.

Where Is The Edge Of Our Solar System?

Where does the solar system end? It all depends on the criteria you are using. Based on where the planets end, you could say it's Neptune and the Kuiper Belt. If you measure by edge of the sun's magnetic fields, the end is the heliosphere. If you judge by the stopping point of sun's gravitational influence, the solar system would end at the Oort Cloud.

'Black Widow' Pulsar Animation

This animation shows a black widow pulsar like J0952 together with its small stellar companion, as seen from within their orbital plane. Powerful radiation and the pulsar's "wind" — an outflow of high-energy particles — strongly heat the facing side of the companion, evaporating it over time.

The Most Metal-Poor Dwarf star-Forming Galaxy Found

Using the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), a group of astronomers has found that the star-forming galaxy (SFG) J0811+4730 is the most metal-poor dwarf SFG known to date. The finding is detailed in a paper published online on Sept. 1 on the arXiv pre-print repository.

Set your sights beyond the solar system and take a late summer road trip along the Milky Way.

Evening Planets
Early in the month, Jupiter appears low in the west right after sunset. Try to catch a quick view of Jupiter through a telescope before it dips below the horizon.

After the sky darkens, turn your attention to Saturn in the southwestern sky.
A telescope will provide a wonderful look at the planet’s signature feature, its rings.

Morning Planets
Venus shines brilliantly in the eastern sky before sunrise. By mid-month, Mercury and Mars appear between Venus and the horizon, but they could be difficult to spot in the
morning twilight.

Mercury disappears from view in late September, but Mars remains in the sky and moves closer to Venus as the month progresses.

Constellations and Deep-Sky Objects
Aquarius is one of the oldest constellations, recognized even by early civilizations. In ancient mythologies, Aquarius is the god of the waters. Look for the Water Jar, a group of stars shaped like a Y. A rich, compact cluster of stars can be seen in Aquarius. Known as M2, it contains about 150,000 stars located about 37,500 light-years away. Binoculars present it well, but a small telescope reveals much more detail in the cluster’s compact center.

Nearby lies the great constellation Capricornus. Known in mythology as the Water Goat, it represents a creature that fed and watered the infant Zeus, ruler of the Greek gods. Algedi is the brightest star in Capricornus. It’s visible in binoculars as an elongated star. This odd shape is due to a visual trick. From our distant vantage point, two unrelated stars appear to be close together.

Capricornus also hosts a dense cluster of stars, M30. A small telescope easily resolves individual stars in the cluster.

'Captain Kirk' Gives Command To Send Message To Voyager Probe

William Shatner, the actor who played Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, gave the command at NASA's Jet Propusion Laboratory on Sept. 5, 2017 to send a message written by Oliver Jenkins that states "We offer friendship across the stars. You are not alone." The message was sent in honor of the 40th anniversary of the launch of NASA's Voyager 1 probe.

Active Luminous Blue Variables In The Large Magellanic Cloud

Luminous Blue Variables signal a spectacular transition
phase near the end of massive stellar evolution and have
attracted attention since the beginnings of astronomical
observations, yet their progenitors and immediate fates
remain unclear. Their impressive, recurrent outburst
episodes, which produce major spectral and visual luminosity
variations, as well as the less frequent giant eruptions
that create circumstellar nebulae, have often been described
for examples in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, but a
definitive identification of the physical mechanisms
underlying these phenomena remains elusive. Even the
phenomenology is incompletely known, with new behaviors
recently being discovered, some of which will be shown here.
One difficulty is that the timescales of these events often
exceed the careers, or at least the attention spans, of
individual investigators. For instance, the end of a
three-decade outburst of R127 in the Large Magellanic Cloud
was announced in 2008, only to have it resume before the
paper appeared and continue to this day!

Another challenge is that the outbursts are sudden and
unpredictable. Thus, continuous, at least monthly monitoring
is essential in order not to miss something important. At
visual maximum, these objects become the brightest stars in
the LMC, exceeding 9th magnitude in the most extreme cases.
The total energy output changes little or not at all during
their outbursts, but the high-energy ultraviolet flux is
reprocessed progressively to longer wavelengths as the
temperature of the expanding atmosphere decreases and the
apparent spectral type becomes cooler. The outbursts
subsequently invert and then recur. Until recently, it was
assumed that the LBV phase would be followed by a Wolf–Rayet
stage with extreme, continuous ejection of material, but
recent evidence suggests that some LBVs may proceed directly
to final supernova explosions. Improved physical
understanding of the LBV phenomena is essential for a
complete view of the end states of massive stars.

Region 2673 just produced a major X2.2 solar flare at approximately 09:10 UTC (Sept 6). This is the first X-Class event to be detected since May 2015. The active region is still in a decent position for Earth directed eruptions. More updates will be provided should a coronal mass ejection (CME) be associated.

X-Class : A Guide To Solar Flares

Flares happen when the powerful magnetic fields in and around the sun reconnect. They're usually associated with active regions, often seen as sun spots, where the magnetic fields are strongest. Flares are classified according to their strength. The smallest ones are B-class, followed by C, M and X, the largest. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. So an X is 10 times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class, there is a finer scale from 1 to 9. C-class flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go higher than 9. The most powerful flare on record was in 2003, during the last solar maximum. It was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. They cut-out at X28. A powerful X-class flare like that can create long lasting radiation storms, which can harm satellites and even give airline passengers, flying near the poles, small radiation doses. X flares also have the potential to create global transmission problems and world-wide blackouts.
