In this image celebrating Hubble's 31st birthday, the giant red nebula (NGC 2014) and its smaller blue neighbor (NGC 2020) are part of a vast star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, located 163,000 light-years away. The image is nicknamed the "Cosmic Reef," because NGC 2014 resembles part of a coral reef floating in a vast sea of stars.

HUNDREDS SEE SHINY OBJECT

Flying Saucer Chased 86 Miles

RAVENNA, Ohio - "We were close, closer than I ever want to be again," said a deputy sheriff who chased an unidentified flying object from Ohio into Pennsylvania. Hundreds of persons in both states reported seeing the "brilliant and shiny" object early yesterday morning. Police Chief Gerald Buchert of Mantua, about eight miles north of Ravenna, said be took a picture of the object from his front yard but the Air Force told him not to release it. Buchert said it looked like "two table saucers put together."

Portage County Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur said he and his partner, W.L. "Barney" Neff, "were close" to the object in separate ears and chased it 86 miles (or an hour and a half, from near Ravenna to Conway, PA, near Pittsburgh. Spaur said he clocked it at speeds up to 103 miles per hour. From the ground Spaur said it looked like the head of a flashlight, about 40 feet wide. Spaur said the lines of the object were very distinct. "Somebody had control over it," he said. "It wasn't just floating around. It can maneuver." The deputy said the chase slowed down near Rochester, when the cars "got tangled up in a mess of bridges ... but when I came out from under the bridge it came down and waited for us, just as though it knew these two cars were following it. I know nobody's going to believe it but it's true."

Spaur said the only sound coming from the object waa a steady, faint humming, like an electric transformer. Near Conway, Spaur said the object began hovering and "was going for altitude, straight up." He said the object disappeared after twilight, while others went to a police station to telephone Air Force officials. The Federal Aviation Agency's air traffic control centers at Oberlin and Pittsburgh said they spotted no unknown objects on their radar.

Patrolman Wayne Houston of East Palestine said he spotted and began following the object at approximately 5:35 am. After being alerted a half hour earlier by a police radio broadcast, Houston followed it along Ohio H and Pennsylvania S southeast to Conway and estimated its speed at up to 100 miles an hour. "As near as I can describe it, it looked like a partially melted ice cream cone – a wedge - shaped affair with the pointy part of it being down." Houston said, adding: "It was very bright, very brightly illuminated. One solid light - not individual lights." Houston said that he and other patrolmen with whom he was in radio communication during the pursuit saw "what looked like an antenna sticking out on one aide of it when they got near Rochester."

I always look behind me so no one can come up behind me. And when I looked in this wooded area behind us, I saw this thing. At this time it was coming up . . . to about tree top level. I'd say about one hundred feet. it started moving toward us.... As it came over the trees, I looked at Barney and he was still watching the car . . and he didn't say nothing and the thing kept getting brighter and the area started to get light. .. . I told him to look over his shoulder, and he did.

He just stood there with his mouth open for a minute, as bright as it was, and he looked down. And I started looking down and I looked at my hands and my clothes weren't burning or anything, when it stopped right over on top of us. The only thing, the only sound in the whole area was a hum . . . like a transformer being loaded or an overloaded transformer when it changes.

I was petrified, and so I moved my right foot, and everything seemed to work all right. And evidently he made the same decision I did, to get something between me and it, or us and it, or whatever you would say. So we both went for the car, we got in the car and we sat there ... It was very bright; it'd make your eyes water.

We could see these planes coming in.... When they started talking about fighter planes, it was just as if that thing heard every word that was said; it went PSSSSSHHEW, straight up; and I mean when it went up, friend, it didn't play no games – it went straight up."
