STEREO is a solar observation mission. Two nearly identical spacecraft were launched in 2006 into orbits around the Sun that cause them to respectively pull farther ahead of and fall gradually behind the Earth. This enables stereoscopic imaging of the Sun and solar phenomena, such as coronal mass ejections But every now and then the cameras pick up somethings that shouldn't be there and this is one of them times. Mystery of Galaxy's Missing Dark Matter Deepens






In a case of The More We Learn, The Less We Know, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope uncovered an unprecedented oddball galaxy that looked like it didn't have much dark matter. Some thought the finding was hard to believe and looked for a simpler explanation. Dark matter – as far as we know – is the invisible glue that makes up the bulk of the universe's matter. All galaxies appear to be dominated by it; in fact, galaxies are thought to form inside immense halos of dark matter.



So, finding a galaxy (named NGC 1052-DF2, referred to simply as "DF2") lacking the invisible stuff is an extraordinary claim that challenges conventional wisdom. It would have the potential to upset theories of galaxy formation and evolution.

"For almost every galaxy we look at, we say that we can't see most of the mass because it's dark matter," a NASA astronomer explained. "What you see is only the tip of the iceberg with Hubble. But in this case, what you see is what you get. Hubble really shows the entire thing. That's it. It's not just the tip of the iceberg, it's the whole iceberg."

I was looking up at the sky and there was this flashing light like a plane, like a blinking light from a plane, and it blinked, and it appeared ... now in the sky, it was a wide distance, like if you put your arms up, that's a big distance. It looked like it went in that direction, and then popped up almost instantly over on the other side, and I was like, Uhhh ... OK ... That's kind of crazy ... and all of a sudden, right when I said that, it blinked four times and ... went straight up into outer space. I swear to god. It vanished. And I was like ... No. Way."

In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at why billionaires won't save us from climate change. Specifically, I look at how the elite philanthropy of Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk function as more of a billionaire preservation of wealth and self than as an act of altruism.

Elite philanthropy from Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos in particular seem to solidify their political and social power even more. Bill Gates and his foundation have steered the realm of global health for quite some time (especially during the pandemic) and it seems as if he is using his billionaire wealth to do the same for climate action.

Jeff Bezos' $10 billion Earth Fund seems to be functioning in a similar way while also whitewashing the destructive nature of Amazon, aka how Jeff Bezos made his money. Elon Musk is also jumping on the billionaire philanthropy train with a carbon capture prize that is measly compared to his massive wealth.

At the end of the day billionaires and billionaire money are not solutions to climate change and the climate crisis, we are."
