A Pair of CMEs Heading to Earth - NASA's SDO Sees a Total Solar Eclipse From Space

A pair of CMEs from July 28th are anticipated to pass close to Earth on July 31 and August 1 and 2. While models for these transients indicated mostly close proximity flanking influences, it is probable these nearby transients could cause weak disturbances in the solar wind field all three days.

Constellation Scutum



Scutum over the famous Teapot pattern in the constellation Sagittarius, near the bright red star Antares in Scorpius

The constellation Scutum has an unusual history. The Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius named it Scutum Sobiescianum, meaning the shield of Sobieski, in 1683. He named it for Jan III Sobieski, a Polish king who led his armies to victory in the Battle of Vienna.





It is one of only two constellations named after real people, the other being Coma Berenices, named for an Egyptian queen. Scutum can be found in August near Vega and Altair, two thirds of the majestic Summer Triangle.

Massive COCONUTS Exoplanet Discovery: Giant Planet Just 35 Light Years From Earth

Astronomers have discovered thousands of exoplanets — planets beyond our solar system — but few have been directly imaged, because they are extremely difficult to see with existing telescopes. A University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy (IfA) graduate student, Zhoujian Zhang, has beaten the odds and discovered a directly imaged exoplanet, and it’s the closest one to Earth ever found, at a distance of only 35 light years.

Using the COol Companions ON Ultrawide orbiTS (COCONUTS) online survey, Zhang and a team of astronomers identified a planet about six times the mass of Jupiter. The team’s research, published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, led to the discovery of the low-temperature gas-giant planet orbiting a low-mass red dwarf star. They dubbed the new planetary system COCONUTS-2, and the new planet COCONUTS-2b.

“With a massive planet on a super-wide-separation orbit, and with a very cool central star, COCONUTS-2 represents a very different planetary system than our own solar system,” Zhang explained.

We have seen many cases of unidentified flying objects landing in forests, perhaps the most famous of these was the 1981 Carlos Diaz UFO case, which was one of the most amazing cases of UFO sightings in the history of UFOs. In the modern era, there have also been some observations of unidentified flying objects while landing in forests around the world. The most important of these was the landing of a UFO on Mount Kandel in the Black Forest, Waldkirch, Germany in 2013. In 2021 there were two cases of UFO landings over the Andes Santiago de Chile, and on a hill in Taxco Guerrero, Mexico.

Coronal Dimming, Long-Duration Solar Flare + CME - Mercury at Superior Solar Conjunction

Solar Update – August 1, 2021: A coronal dimming was observed in the vicinity of Region 2849, SDO/AIA 193 x-ray data recorded a long-duration B2.4 event. STEREO-A COR2 coronagraph imagery observed a CME beginning at about 31/1753 UTC. SOHO LASCO C2 C3 coronagraphs also captured the coronal mass ejection.

Comet NEOWISE & The Big Dipper – APOD Podcast





"It was just last July. If you could see the stars of the Big Dipper, you could find Comet NEOWISE in your evening sky. After sunset denizens of the north could look for the naked-eye comet below the bowl of that famous celestial kitchen utensil and above the northwestern horizon. The comet looked like a fuzzy 'star' with a tail, though probably not so long a tail as in this memorable skyview recorded from the Czech Republic on July 23th, 2020, near the comet's closest approach to planet Earth. Photographs of C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) often did show the comet's broad dust tail and fainter but separate bluish ion tail extending farther than the eye could follow. Skygazers around the world were delighted to witness Comet NEOWISE, our surprise visitor from the outer Solar System! Have a great day, everyone, and we'll see you in class!"
