Lots of Lively Poised to Erupt | Space Weather News | 05.22.2022

Our Sun has been busy, but Earth has remained outside the crosshairs for most of the activity. There are quite a few active regions on the Earth-facing disk, including a X-flare player, but with the exception of a few radio blackouts, these regions have not caused us any lasting effects. In fact, no solar storms have been directly launched towards Earth over the past couple of weeks, which has left aurora photographers feeling a bit left out.

An algae battery has been developed that can power a microprocessor.
reliable biological photovoltaic cell using algae
Quote he system, comparable in size to an AA battery, contains a type of non-toxic algae called Synechocystis that naturally harvests energy from the sun through photosynthesis. The tiny electrical current this generates then interacts with an aluminium electrode and is used to power a microprocessor.

The system is made of common, inexpensive and largely recyclable materials. This means it could easily be replicated hundreds of thousands of times to power large numbers of small devices as part of the Internet of Things. The researchers say it is likely to be most useful in off-grid situations or remote locations, where small amounts of power can be very beneficial.

“The growing Internet of Things needs an increasing amount of power, and we think this will have to come from systems that can generate energy, rather than simply store it like batteries,” said Professor Christopher Howe in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Biochemistry, joint senior author of the paper.

He added: “Our photosynthetic device doesn’t run down the way a battery does because it’s continually using light as the energy source.”

In the experiment, the device was used to power an Arm Cortex M0+, which is a microprocessor used widely in Internet of Things devices. It operated in a domestic environment and semi-outdoor conditions under natural light and associated temperature fluctuations, and after six months of continuous power production the results were submitted for publication.

Rock & Roll Secrets with Jim Berkenstadt || Richard Syrett's Strange Planet

Music enthusiast Richard devotes a whole show to rock & roll. There was a lot I didn't know in this interview, including the story of former Beatle Jimmie Nicol, who I never heard of.

Quote Richard welcomes the Rock and Roll Detective to discuss his career researching, consulting and writing about the history of Rock music and Rock legends. Guest Jim Berkenstadt has spent a lifetime researching, writing, and consulting in pop music history. His books on the unreleased recordings of The Beatles ("Black Market Beatles") and the making of Nirvana’s seminal album Nevermind are critically acclaimed. Berkenstadt has served as a consultant to The Beatles (Apple Corps Ltd.), George Harrison and the Harrison family, The Traveling Wilburys, the band Garbage, and many international record labels.

Biden: NASA to Welcome Japanese Astronaut Aboard Gateway

Lights-On Nobody-Home Sock Puppet President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met in Tokyo Monday where they announced progress on collaboration for human and robotic lunar missions. They confirmed their commitment to include a Japanese astronaut aboard the lunar Gateway outpost and their shared ambition to see a future Japanese astronaut land on the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program.

"In recent years, the alliance between Japan and the United States has grown stronger, deeper, and more capable as we work together to take on new challenges - just as important as the opportunities - of a rapidly changing world," said President Biden's cue card.

    UFO History w/Charles Lear

AudioBlog: A UFO Captured by Children in Japan?

    The Kera Boys

Capturing a UFO in a photo or video is the goal of many UFO enthusiasts, but wouldn’t it be great to physically capture a UFO and examine it? From Japan comes the story of a group of young boys who claimed to have done just that. According to them, it was a small hat-shaped object that eventually managed to escape from them, but not before they were able to make some detailed drawings of it. The story made international news and is still discussed today. Japanese researcher, Otakupapa, wrote a well-researched six-part series about the case titled, “Amazing Japanese Boys Who Captured a Small UFO in 1972,” and published on his site, otakupapa.net. Was it a hoax? The debate has not died down ...

Blue-green Algae Has Powered a Computer For Six Months

Scientists Create Algae Computer Powered by Photosynthesis

    Pond scum battery

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have managed to run a computer for six months, using algae as a power source.

Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, a type of blue-green algae which gives oxygen through photosynthesis when exposed to sunlight, was sealed in a small container, roughly the size of an AA battery, made of aluminum and clear plastic. The study has been published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.

Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, was inside the unit, which was then left on a windowsill. The algae photosynthesized, generating a tiny current of electricity that powered an ARM Cortex-M0+ chip.

Christopher Howe of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues argue that similar photoynthetic power generators might be the source of power for a wide spectrum of small devices in the future, without the need for the rare and unsustainable materials used in batteries today.
