W5: The Soul Nebula by José Jiménez (Astromet)



Stars are forming in the Soul of the Queen of Aethopia. More specifically, a large star forming region called the Soul Nebula can be found in the direction of the constellation Cassiopeia, whom Greek mythology credits as the vain wife of a King who long ago ruled lands surrounding the upper Nile river. Also known as Westerhout 5 (W5), the Soul Nebula houses several open clusters of stars, ridges and pillars darkened by cosmic dust, and huge evacuated bubbles formed by the winds of young massive stars. Located about 6,500 light years away, the Soul Nebula spans about 100 light years and is usually imaged next to its celestial neighbor the Heart Nebula (IC 1805). The featured image is a composite of exposures made in different colors: red as emitted by hydrogen gas, yellow as emitted by sulfur, and blue as emitted by oxygen.

What excites the Heart Nebula? First, the large emission nebula dubbed IC 1805 looks, in whole, like a human heart. Its shape perhaps fitting of the Valentine's Day, this heart glows brightly in red light emitted by its most prominent element: excited hydrogen. The red glow and the larger shape are all created by a small group of stars near the nebula's center. In the heart of the Heart Nebula are young stars from the open star cluster Melotte 15 that are eroding away several picturesque dust pillars with their energetic light and winds. The open cluster of stars contains a few bright stars nearly 50 times the mass of our Sun, many dim stars only a fraction of the mass of our Sun, and an absent microquasar that was expelled millions of years ago. The Heart Nebula is located about 7,500 light years away toward the constellation of the mythological Queen of Aethiopia (Cassiopeia).

This Week in Volcano News: Merapi Erupts, Alaska Volcano Update

A major eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano just occurred, causing pyroclastic flows to descend more than 2 miles from its summit. Meanwhile, in Alaska, the alert level was raised to orange at both the Tanaga & Takawangha volcanoes, suggesting that an eruption might be imminent. Also, in El Salvador, the San Miguel volcano erupted once again this week, ending a nearly 3 month long period with no eruptions occurring from its edifice. And in Hawaii, the Kilauea volcano seemingly stopped erupting, but it appears to only be an eruptive pause. Researchers Reveal What Happens When Your Phone Is Spying on You





Research confirms that detecting and removing smartphone spyware applications is challenging

A team of computer scientists from New York and San Diego has found that smartphone spyware applications, which enable individuals to monitor each other, are not only difficult to identify and detect but are also prone to inadvertently exposing the sensitive personal data they gather.

Although advertised as tools for supervising minors and employees using company-owned devices, spyware apps are often exploited by abusers to secretly monitor a spouse or partner. These applications demand minimal technical knowledge from the perpetrators, provide comprehensive installation guidance, and merely require temporary access to the target’s device. Once installed, they discreetly document the victim’s device usage—including text messages, emails, images, and phone calls—enabling abusers to remotely access this information via a web portal.





Spyware has become an increasingly serious problem. In one recent study from Norton Labs, the number of devices with spyware apps in the United States increased by 63% between September 2020 and May 2021. A similar report from Avast in the United Kingdom recorded a stunning 93% increase in the use of spyware apps over a similar period.

If you want to know if your device has been infected by one of these apps, you should check your privacy dashboard and the listing of all apps in settings, the research team says ...

Saturn is back in the morning sky. Try using the thin waning crescent moon before sunrise on the mornings of March 18 and 19, 2023, to find the ringed planet. Saturn is deep in the morning twilight, but it’s as bright as some of our sky’s brightest stars, shining at +0.9 magnitude.

In the evenings throughout March, red Mars moves nearly overhead after sunset. It lies near the Hyades and Pleiades star clusters in Taurus the Bull. Mars will be about as bright as the reddish star nearby, Aldebaran, the Eye of the Bull.

Yes I know right? How DOES an 18th century sailing battleship work???

Its anchors are larger than some boats, and the process of moving them was very difficult taking up to hundreds of sailors who turn epically long bars driving a rope that isn't even attached to the anchor rope, because that's too big. So the proxy rope, driven by the sailor's pullies, then pulls the anchor's rope.

The video explains this and that it took hours.

My solution would be to never lower them and just cruise around looking cool. Get the small rowing boats to ferry supplies from the coast, and stand on that front bit that sticks out, wearing a tricorne, with cocktails, surrounded by beautiful people with 80's swimwear looking cool and having a good time.

Sea ships and navy seems to be the paradigm for space. But if they don't look like saucers, or wedding cakes, then they look like planes. Where are the space SHIPS? If you work hard enough with the game Kerbal Space Program you can get a ship looking thing into space and cruise around. It's a pirate ship so it can terrorize Kerbals base jumping on Kerbal's second moon Minmus.




That's a shot of the space pirate ship, but that is a fake spaceship I made from a computer game. We probably need to look at a real spaceship...: The Starship Enterprise! It's real because it's been on TV.

The clan dubbed the 'real life Addams family' claim they hear a little girl crying and smell rotten eggs in their 'haunted home'.

Jon Paul Kennedy, 33, and his partner, Kymmi Jeffery, 38, say they have experienced the mysterious happenings in their spooky home since they moved to their new house in September 2022.The couple are putting up cameras to capture the spooky ongoings and say their daughters - Snow, 10, and Pebble, six - are just as intrigued.

The family, who travel in a hearse called Morticia, hope to set up a museum for their artefacts, which include two cursed dolls, Mimi and Esther, pieces of jewellery, and a dybbuk box.

To see the feathered serpent descend the Mayan pyramid requires exquisite timing. You must visit El Castillo -- in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula -- near an equinox. Then, during the late afternoon if the sky is clear, the pyramid's own shadows create triangles that merge into the famous illusion of a slithering viper. Also known as the Temple of Kukulkan, the impressive step-pyramid stands 30 meters tall and 55 meters wide at the base.

Built up as a series of square terraces by the pre-Columbian civilization between the 9th and 12th century, the structure can be used as a calendar and is noted for astronomical alignments. The featured composite image was captured in 2019 with Jupiter and Saturn straddling the diagonal central band of our Milky Way galaxy. March 20th marks another equinox -- not only at Temple of Kukulcán, but all over planet Earth.

Pentagon Officials Suggest Alien Mothership Could Send Mini Probes to Earth

New research paper, in draft form, comes from the Pentagon's All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office





Pentagon officials said in a draft document last week that aliens could be visiting our solar system and releasing smaller probes like missions conducted by NASA when studying other planets.

A draft research report authored by Sean Kirkpatrick, the director of the Pentagon’s All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) and Abraham Loeb, chairman of Harvard University’s astronomy department was released on March 7 and focuses on the physical constraints of unidentified aerial phenomena.

The AARO was established in July 2022 and is responsible for tracking objects in the sky, underwater and in space – or possibly an object that has the ability to move from one domain to the next.

"...An artificial interstellar object could potentially be a parent craft that releases many small probes during its close passage to Earth, an operational construct not too dissimilar from NASA missions," the report read. "These ‘dandelion seeds’ could be separated from the parent craft by the tidal gravitational force of the Sun or by a maneuvering capability."

On October 19, 2017, astronomers detected an unusual interstellar object that was later named ‘Oumuamua, or scout in Hawaiian. The object was cigar-shaped, appeared flat, and was propelled away from the Sun without showing a cometary tail, leading scientists to believe it was artificial.

"With proper design, these tiny probes would reach the Earth or other solar system planets for exploration, as the parent craft passes by within a fraction of the Earth-Sun separation — just like ‘Oumuamua’ did," the authors wrote. "Astronomers would not be able to notice the spray of mini probes because they do not reflect enough sunlight for existing survey telescopes to notice them."
