    3I/ATLAS Basics

    3I/ATLAS sweeps past Mars

    ◘ Origin:
The "I" in its name stands for "interstellar," meaning it came from another star system.

    ◘ Discovery:
The ATLAS survey in Chile first detected it in July 2025.

    ◘ Name:
It is the third interstellar object found, hence the "3". The name "ATLAS" comes from the survey that discovered it.

    ◘ Speed:
It is the fastest object ever detected in our solar system.

    ◘ Size:
Initial estimates suggest it could be larger than previously thought, possibly up to 20 km across. Some observations estimate the nucleus could be as small as 440 meters across, though it could be much larger.

    ◘ Behavior:
It started forming a coma (a fuzzy cloud of gas and dust) at a distance from the sun that is much farther out than typical comets.

    ◘ Trajectory:
It is on a hyperbolic trajectory, meaning it will not orbit our sun but will travel through the solar system and then exit back into interstellar space.

    ◘ Threat:
Scientists have determined that it is not on a collision course with Earth.

Cops Pull Over Suspect With Hand Drawn License Plate

Art class meets the open road.

California Highway Patrol officers in Merced were taken aback during a recent traffic stop when they noticed a license plate that looked straight out of a sketchbook.

Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the California plate was a hand-drawn imitation, rather than an official DMV-issued tag, the CHP said Friday on Facebook.

“We’ll give this driver points for creativity,” the department wrote.

The driver explained to officers that they had lost the original license plate and resorted to creating a makeshift version. While the creativity was noted, the homemade plate was not legally acceptable.

“If your plates are lost or stolen, you can easily get replacements through the DMV instead of breaking out the art supplies,” the post added.

Astrophotographer Uroš Fink captured Comet Lemmon positioned above a lonesome tree in Slovenia. Comet Lemmon has reached its closest approach to our Sun and is now approaching Earth - although it is not passing close enough to be a danger. It is expected to brighten and may become visible to the unaided eye over the next few weeks.

    The Night Sky

Tuesday, Oct. 21 — New Moon

The moon will pass the sun at new moon on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 8:25 a.m. EDT (5:25 a.m. PDT, or 1225 GMT). At that time, our natural satellite will be 3.8 degrees south of the sun in Virgo. While new, the moon is traveling between Earth and the sun. Since sunlight can only illuminate the far side of the moon, and the moon is in the same region of the sky as the sun, it is usually completely hidden from view from anywhere on Earth for about a day.

Friday, Oct. 24 — Young Moon Near Antares (after sunset)

    https://www.space.com/16149-night-sky.html

As the sky darkens after sunset on Friday, Oct. 24, the waxing crescent moon will be positioned a thumb's width below (or 2 degrees to the celestial southwest of) the star that marks the heart of the Scorpion, bright reddish Antares. The pair will make a lovely sight in binoculars (orange circle) as they sink in the southwestern sky. Sharp eyes might catch Mercury and Mars off to their right.

Saturday, Oct. 25 — The Dolphin Swims the Southern Sky (all night)

During mid-evening in late October, the small constellation of Delphinus is positioned high in the southern sky. Look for its five 4th magnitude stars shining just to the lower left (or celestial southeast) of the line connecting the very bright stars Deneb and Altair.

According to Greek legend, Poseidon, god of the seas, was assisted in a matter of the heart by a friendly dolphin, so he rewarded it with a place of honor in the heavens. Delphinus' brightest two stars are bluish Sualocin, at the top of its head, and whitish Rotanev, at the nape of its neck. Those funny appellations are actually the name of 19th-century astronomer Nicolaus Venator spelled backwards.

In 1951, naval aviation was on the brink of collapse. Carrier pilots were dying every week, and landing a jet on a moving ship was almost suicidal. Then came Captain Dennis Cambell of the Royal Navy, a man with no engineering degree but one revolutionary idea — a quick sketch that would change everything.

BG, thanks. This man is a model of intrinsic leadership, against odds of heavy institutional backlash.

He stood his ground, was given a chance to prove his idea of an angled landing deck, and the results were on his side.

Bluegreen’s post should be viewed apolitically. Every serious warrior I’ve read, has empathy for opposing or theoretically enemy fighting folks. They know that the conflicts are the works of governments, and the fighters are just doing their jobs.

'Near Stationary' Tropical Storm Melissa is Moving Slower Than a Person Walking

    — and it may bring deadly flash floods to the Caribbean

Tropical Storm Melissa is moving at a snail's pace but will intensify rapidly as it feeds off near-record-warm water temperatures in the Caribbean Sea, forecasters say.

After circling the central Caribbean Sea and remaining 'near stationary' this week, Tropical Storm Melissa is now about 160 miles (260 kilometers) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, and drifting southeastward at 1 mph (1.6 km/h).

The storm's bafflingly slow advance, which is projected to stay below an average person's walking speed at around 2 mph (3.2 km/h) over the weekend, could be dire for several Caribbean islands, experts warn.

Tropical Storm Melissa will continue to lumber along a path somewhere between Jamaica and Haiti, with forecasters predicting a slow movement toward the northeast and north in the coming hours, and a westward drift from late October onward.

Melissa is the 13th named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. It's unclear exactly what has been stalling it, but a combination of strong upper-level winds and other dampening conditions across weather systems could be responsible. For instance, the lack of a cold front — a wedge of cold air that pushes warmer air up and causes it to release its energy, creating bad weather — might partially explain Melissa's crawling speed.

    Autumn Constellations

Auriga the Charioteer and Bright Capella

Auriga the Charioteer is a popular constellation for Northern Hemisphere observers in autumn, because its flashing star advertises its presence. Capella, the brightest star in Auriga, flashes red, blue and green when it’s close to the horizon and seen through a thick layer of Earth’s atmosphere. Close to Capella are a pair of stars known as The Kids, baby goats that the Charioteer carries. And Auriga houses three star clusters, easy targets to hunt down with binoculars.

Auriga is a far-northern constellation. It’s close enough to the North Star that people in the northern U.S. and Canada – and similar latitudes – see it as circumpolar. In other words, they can see all or part of the constellation on any night of the year.

But some times of the year are definitely better than others. If you want to see the entirety of Auriga, start looking for the constellation and flickering Capella in Northern Hemisphere autumn. Soon you’ll be familiar with its gems and ready to go deeper by the time it moves higher and into better viewing position by winter.

If you’re unsure whether you’ve identified Capella, you can always look nearby for a small triangle of stars. This triangle is an asterism, or a smaller named configuration of stars. While Capella is known as the Goat Star, this little triangle asterism represents The Kids.

Auriga’s brightest star, Alpha Aurigae, is a twinkling beauty named Capella. It’s a golden star, somewhat similar to our sun. In fact, if you could get some distance away from our solar system – light-years away – you might see our Sun much as we see this striking star. Capella is located at one corner of the constellation Auriga, marking the Charioteer’s left shoulder.

Quiet Saturday evening in, watching The Commitments, stopped to catch my breath and dry some tears. 27 minutes left, of 1:52:40.

So much joy of life portrayed, and so much quirky mind-messing like the twin younger sisters who pop up now and then. Very much like the charming Australian twin women who have been posted here.

The music is kind of, I would say, heavenly. It just sounds so nice, and I hope actual Heaven sounds as good. Might take eons, but if they don’t have it by then, then I will blast us some Commitments.

    Happy Saturday night, all.
