I've been told that "black seed" is actually black cumin seed, black cumin being a special type of cumin. Because they're good for both blood sugar and circulation, that covers a number of ailments and conditions. Various middle Eastern people have told me they cure just about everything, but that would be an exaggeration -- unless black cumin is only one of a group of seeds.

These black seeds (nigella sativa) sound similar to chia seeds (salvia hispanica).

I get chia seeds from Hidalgo Foods for about $10 per pound.

From what I can gather from a quick search, black seeds are about three times more expensive, but have an interesting flavor suitable for use as a spice, whereas the cheaper chia seeds are rather mild and bland tasting, suitable only for use as nutrition.
$10/pound for Nigella sativa at the company in my first link: http://blackseedherbalessence.com/ca...e8e986c18561d8

(Or, $8/pound if you buy in 5 pounds bulk.)

I know chia seeds are also healthy, but in the world of herbs, even different subspecies of the same species, or varieties of subspecies can have vastly different chemistry. A great example of that is cannabis sativa, than can have a range from near zero percent to around 25 percent of the cannabinoid THC.

Here the Nigella sativa Wikipedia page, which is pretty good - and lists a few of the various names including "black cumin" and "black onion seed" - and this plant is neither onion (Allium spp.) nor cumin (Cuminum cyminum.)

As Dennis said, the spice called cumin that's used in curries (Cuminum cyminum) is not related to black cumin (Nigella sativa, as Paul noted above).

Here's what Richter's seed catalog has to say about black cumin (Nigella sativa)
    --------------------
    Cumin, Black
    Nigella sativa
(Fennel flower, Russian caraway, Black caraway). Commonly featured in Indian dahls and equally at home in Russian rye bread. Aromatic black seeds resemble fennel in aroma and taste something like peppery nutmeg. Seeds can be ground and used with near abandon like black pepper. Its legendary healing powers are summed up in the Arab proverb, 'In the black seed is the medicine for every disease except death.'
    -------------------

If you want to grow some of your own, it's grown as an annual, and is easy to start from seed. A packet of seeds is $1.85 from Richter's.

Phenomenal post. I just bought herbs and spices yesterday to plant today (though rain clouds have other ideas). I'll absolutely add these to the garden.

The 'sativa' name threw me off. Though I've heard that variety has medicinal effects. (Sorta joking, sorta not)

Hi Marianne, Do you know if the plants are edible? Or is it just the seeds.

Hi Swan, I don't know about using the plant (herb) of nigella sativa. I assume the plant itself is not used, since I've never noticed any mention of it.
If I find anything on that, I'll post it and send you a link.

Me too! I'm going to plant some.

There is a very small, US company called "Horizon Herbs" that I have been buying a few things from over the past couple of years. Nice folks, and if you are looking for a small company to support, this would be a great choice.

Nigella sativa at Horizon Herbs: ($2.95 for 200 seeds) http://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=2299

    Dennis
p.s. Yeah, what's with the "______ sativa" anyway? So, I was curious and looked it up. Wikipedia says
Quote Sativa, Latin botanical adjective meaning cultivated, used to designate seed-grown domestic crops such as, for example:
Sativa ends in -a, because it is the feminine form of the adjective, but masculine (-us) and neuter (-um) endings are used to agree with the gender of the nouns they modify, for example, Crocus sativusSaffron (masculine) and Pisum sativumPea (neuter).
I note also there is an "award winning" porn actress named Sativa Rose, and that also made me wonder... just exactly what does a female porn actress have to do to win an award, "go all the way?"

So many things I wonder about!

    :~)

Exactly . That's how I could call out the sizes in mm.

I was just alerting those who glanced more quickly that the two seeds were not as different in size as a quick glance might suggest.
Here's the seeds side by side closer to scale:

Thanks for sharing Dennis!! I like the fact that it's a natural antihistamine so I ran out and bought some black seed oil in a gel cap this morning. I dropped some off to my Dad who like me has had food allergies for years.

From what I've read online some people claim to see results within days. I'll report if we experience any changes.

Thank you Dennis, I am going to recommend this to a good friend who has suffered severely from a type of skin condition for 20yrs now. Doctors, specialists and herbalists have never been able to help him. Itchy sore dry flaky skin all over his body, mostly his head and face. It drives him crazy.

Also have your friend read and take heed of the advice in the The Gut (Root) of Most Disease...Not What You Think thread (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/show...hat-you-think-) as many seemingly surface problems are surface manifestations of internal problems. Your description - especially the length of time - makes me think autoimmune response or allergy. From what I have read about wheat this past year, I think wheat alone could be the precursor to many autoimmune diseases. I'm still struggling in these areas too, so I am no posterchild of someone who figured it all out and cured himself.

Ive heard somewhere that wheat gluten causes the proteins to degrade / age faster in the brain...Dennis would you be able to share some of your wheat information sources that you've researched? Its crazy that our society's diet revolves around wheat and dairy...these are 2 of which ive heard gives the body its many problems.

    Hi Twelvestrand,

The best articles I have seen were posted here by other Avalonians:

Wheat: 200 Clinically Confirmed Reasons Not To Eat It: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/200...-not-eat-wheat

and in that article, a link to another article, the Dark Side of Wheat: http://www.greenmedinfo.com/page/dar...rance-sayer-ji

    Dennis

p.s. The "dairy" issue is a debate here, and you can find a number of bright, articulate, and healthy Avalon members who are proponents of (high-quality, usually raw) dairy. Others (including me, and John Robbins) believe that cow's milk is the perfect food for a calf (not a human), and even calves don't drink it their whole lives. So there, I just threw some gasoline on that fire. :~)

Just read a few articles on planting black seed. They dont endure frosts so I would have to start them inside. One article said that they dont transplant well when another artilce says yes, to start them in peat pots.. I dont like peat pots so I'll just try them in 2 inch cells. I would think it would take a heck of a lot of plants to get a pound of seed.

Anyone find any advice about or instructions for making tinctures and using it in tincture form? I was thinking that giving them a simple crush and then tincturing might be of benefit for something. Making an oil is rather difficult.

Nigella sativa, also known as black cumin, black seed, kalonji and haba al-barakah (Arabic name) has been proven with countless peer reviews to effectively treat cancer. More than cancer, Nigella Sativa seeds have been proven to be a treatment for more than 100 diseases.
There have been more than 450 peer reviews in the past 40 years for a wide range of diseases, such as diabetes, MS, Alzheimer’s disease, hepatitis C and more. Originally, Nigella sativa was used to treat migraines and allergies, but recent discoveries have shown that this little black seed is effective in destroying cancer cells.

Dr. Gary Null stated -- “every time you take black cumin you are stimulating your immune system to fight on your behalf and increase natural killer cells.” Thus, referring to its ability to improve the immune system, and help treat even the most impossible invaders like cancer and HIV, successfully.

Researchers at Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson showed that Nigella sativa could cause cell death when used against pancreatic tumor cells. The results showed an 80 percent success rate. This study on pancreatic tumor cells was only the beginning to many future studies on the effect of Nigella sativa against cancer.

Chronic administration of Nigella sativa changes pro and anti-inflammatory proteins. Also it may act as a balancing factor on lymphocytes.
Black Cumin stimulates the production of bone marrow and cells of the immune system. It increases the production of interferon, protects normal cells from the damaging effects of harmful invaders, helps destroy tumor cells and increases the number of antibody producing B cells within us.

According to Hwyda Arafat, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Surgery at College of Thomas Jefferson University, “Nigella sativa helps treat a broad array of diseases, including some immune and inflammatory disorders. Previous studies also have shown anticancer activity in prostate and colon cancers, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.”

The studies showed potential positive results with prostate and colon cancers. Breast cancer has also been studied in separate research showing the ability to eradicate cancer cells and provide excellent health for many women worldwide.

The results showed a significant reduction in total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein in patients taking 2 and 3g of black seed per day.

Further documentation from survivors showed testimonies from people who cured their cancers using Nigella sativa for a wide array of cancers, which include brain, bone and stomach cancer.

There are well over 40 health conditions that may be benefited from the use of the herb, including over 20 distinct pharmacological actions it expresses such as:

    •Analgesic (Pain-Killing)
    •Anti-Bacterial
    •Anti-Inflammatory
    •Anti-Ulcer
    •Anti-Cholinergic
    •Anti-Fungal
    •Ant-Hypertensive
    •Antioxidant
    •Antispasmodic
    •Antiviral
    •Bronchodilator
    •Gluconeogenesis Inhibitor (Anti-Diabetic)
    •Hepatoprotective (Liver Protecting)
    •Hypotensive
    •Insulin Sensitizing
    •Interferon Inducer
    •Leukotriene Antagonist
    •Renoprotective (Kidney Protecting)
    •Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Inhibitor

A woman in Yemen, suffering of stage 3 cancer -- longed for natural treatment. She was advised to take Black Cumin seeds with honey three times a day, in addition to garlic and honey.

After three months, her cancer completely disappeared. The woman continued consumption of these nutrient foods even after illness had diminished.

And not only has Black Cumin demonstrated to help improve a variety of Cancer situations like hers, but researchers at the Cancer Immuno-Biology Laboratory in South Carolina also found -- Black Cumin helps stimulate the activity of neutrophil granulocytes -- the most abundant type of white blood cell in the body.

These neutrophils target cancer cells before they multiply, and help eliminate them before they can develop into harmful tumors.
Nigella sativa has many benefits. It contains strong anti-hypertensive, anti-Inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, and anti-histamine properties. It also strengthens the immune system. Additional benefits are that it promotes lactation and is anti-parasitic.

THE ‘DEADLIEST’ FORM OF CANCER -- DESTROYED BY BLACK CUMIN

Nigella Sativa has been a well-documented beneficial supplement for many forms of cancer, including pancreatic cancer.

Right now, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in America, because the survival rate after five years of conventional cancer treatment is sadly, only 4 percent.

A study conducted at Kimmel Cancer Center, at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia -- revealed that Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin) DESTROYED pancreatic cancer cells -- with an incredible 80 percent cancer tumor cell death! It also showed to stop the gene transcription process so cancer cells can’t replicate!

The magic ingredient in Nigella Sativa appears to be thymoquinone. Researchers believe thymoquinone holds promise as a preventative strategy both for patients who have already gone through surgery and chemotherapy, as well as a promising preventative measure -- especially for those genetically prone

Why does treating cancer have to be so difficult? There are over 400 different protocols for cancer and some are extremely expensive. Not only is Nigella sativa simple to use, it is also inexpensive. In fact, Nigella sativa is one of the most inexpensive protocols currently on the market.
The “OIL” - is the most effective form to consume Black Cumin because the oil is more concentrated than whole seeds unpressed, and is more readily assimilated.

Also, because of it’s potent, absorbable concentration -- only 1 teaspoon is needed per dose.

Most health experts and natural physicians recommend taking 1 teaspoon of the oil two times per day for therapeutic effects, on an empty stomach/before meals and bedtime. Or once per day, for a healthy maintenance dose or as a preventative measure.

Black Cumin can have sedative effects for some though, and because the oils have bile-expelling characteristics, in my opinion, it is best taken in the evening -- unless utilizing 2x per day for therapeutic benefits.

You can take the oil on its own, mixed in water or juice (*great with raw honey), or can be added to warm tea -- like herbal chai, etc.

Mix with honey and/or garlic for a great tonic for effective immunity-boosting during cold and flu season.

In that case a hand-made soap based on black cumin seed could also be interesting. I made some a couple of years ago and got good feedback from people with allergies as they reacted well to them (I used the oil). If you like I could look up a recipe (if your friend likes crafty crafty), if not you can get them quite readily on hand-made stuff sites like Etsy or even Ebay (uk).
