Rachel McAdams was beautiful in "About Time". A really uplifting love story where time travel comes in real handy. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2194499/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_6

She also did "The Time Traveler's Wife" in 2009.
I saw both of those movies and they are unabashedly emotional and both made me happy in tears at points.

I appreciate being reminded to watch The Time Traveler's Wife again soon.

It's in 4 parts on vimeo

"Blade Runner (1982)" is one of my favorite movies. It was supposedly set in 2019.

Here is a link to Ridley Scott's director's cut.

    "Brazil (1985)" is another favorite...unforgettable

"The Fall (2008)" is an imaginative fantasy.

I think my top ten has easily been covered in this thread, great suggestions all over the place.

These are more abstract than scifi I guess...

"The Nines" with Ryan Reynolds and Megan McCarthy
& "John Dies at the End"

Both such strange films that I don't think I can formulate any synopsis that won't take away from the experience.

If you want to talk strange films, it doesn't get much stranger than:

    The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

"The Nines" was definitely strange, very good too. I will look up "John Dies...."

    OK strange and worthwhile....

"Take Shelter (2011)" comes to mind

I don't think "Abre los ojos (1997)" (English Open Your Eyes) has been listed

There is the Tom Cruise remake "Vanilla Sky (2001)". Both have Penelope Cruz.

AND a really weird "after life" film Enter the Void (very dark)

Not categorizable sort of existential film "SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK with Charlie Kaufman

I really enjoyed "Frequently asked questions about Time Travel" -- it's a low budget made for TV movie, but I found it thoroughly enjoyable, while a bit goofy.

This thread gets better every time I come back! I just watched "Green Beautiful". I loved it.

These were two of my favorites when I was a kid:

The Dark Crystal--It's Tolkienish, and it has Jim Henson puppets--a wonderful mix!

and Labyrinth--more puppets and music by David Bowie!

Then there's Pan's Labyrinth (not Jim Henson) but awesome.

Sorry if these aren't adult enough for the thread. I still like them.
I could not watch Pan's Labyrinth before because it felt terrible ...maybe can now?

    "Willow (1988)" fits here.

I don't really recall Willow, but I do recall the "feelings" and associations I got from it. Perhaps I'll have to dig that out again. I was young when I watched that originally.

And I'll second The Dark Crystal, weird but really cool. I was also young when I first watched that, I found it completely fascinating. Jim Henson's best IMHO.

Pan's Labyrinth was pretty dark. But it depends...if the fantasy part was "real" than the ending is okay. If she was dreaming it all, then it is all terribly sad. The effects are amazing though. In a creative, artistic way, no big explosions!

I feel the same way about Willow! How strange. I know I saw it, and yet I couldn't tell you what happened in it, and that's not like me. But I know I liked it. I'm going to have to go back to this one too.

A British wartime aviator who cheats death must argue for his life before a celestial court.

    Angel- A

The heavenly creature he just saved is Angela... and now it's her turn to save him (get his game together).. Luc Besson (Nikita, Leon) manages to deliver a delightful black-and-white Paris.

I always wanted to locate "the Kingdom". It ended up being OK and it is a classic of strange relationships.

Quote The Kingdom (Danish title: Riget) is an eight-episode Danish television mini-series, created by Lars von Trier in 1994, and co-directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred.

The series is set in the neurosurgical ward of Copenhagen's Rigshospitalet, the city and country's main hospital, nicknamed "Riget". "Riget" means "the realm" or "the kingdom" and leads one to think of "dřdsriget", the realm of the dead. The show follows a number of characters, both staff and patients, as they encounter bizarre phenomena, both human and supernatural. The show is notable for its wry humor, its muted sepia colour scheme, and the appearance of a chorus of dishwashers with Down Syndrome who discuss in intimate detail the strange occurrences in the hospital.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Kin..._miniseries%29

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947)"

Quote In early 1900s England, a young widow, Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney), moves to the seaside village of Whitecliff and into Gull Cottage with her daughter Anna (Natalie Wood) and her maid Martha (Edna Best), despite the fierce disapproval of her mother- and sister-in-law. She rents the house despite discovering that the house is haunted. On the first night, she is visited by the ghostly apparition of the former owner, a roguish but harmless sea captain named Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison), who reluctantly promises to make himself known only to her http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ghost_and_Mrs._Muir

The Questor Tapes is a 1974 television movie about an android (portrayed by Robert Foxworth) with incomplete memory tapes who is searching for his creator and his purpose. Conceived by and executive produced by Gene Roddenberry, the script is credited to Roddenberry and fellow Star Trek alumnus Gene L. Coon.

Destiny (Der mude Tod) (The Weary Death) (Between Two Worlds) (1921): Directed by Fritiz Lang.
A beautifully spooky Gothic silent movie about death. It is sort of an anthology with three different stories of love and death told by the grim reaper.

    "Up There (2012)"
Martin (deceased) works a dead-end job, welcoming the newly departed into the afterlife. Moving 'Up There' is all he thinks about. After life mismatched Buddies in a remote seaside town populated by cocky teenagers, sinister old women and Liz.

It is based on Zam Salim's award winning short film 'Laid Off'
