Gulf of Mexico 'dead zone' is the size of Connecticut

    By Melodi Smith, CNN

(CNN) -- The Gulf of Mexico has a "dead zone" the size of the state of Connecticut.

Scientists from the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found an area of 5,052 square miles of "low oxygen water" or hypoxia in their annual survey.

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is caused by nutrients that wash into the Gulf's waters, which in turn boost the growth of algae blooms that suck up the oxygen.

These nutrients come from "human activities, such as agriculture and wastewater" according to NOAA and the U.S. Geological Survey. The nutrients end up in the Mississippi River which deposits them into the Gulf.

Scientists first discovered a dead zone in these waters in 1972. The patch varies in size from year to year.

This year's dead zone was right in line with predictions and is smaller than the five-year average of 5,550 square miles. The survey was taken from July 27 to August 2.

The Gulf of Mexico dead zone is the world's second largest, according to Nancy Rabalais with the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium.

"The number of Dead Zones throughout the world has been increasing in the last several decades and currently totals over 550," Rabalais said of the growing problem.

Within the dead zone marine life struggles to find enough oxygen to survive.

Fish can migrate to other areas with more oxygen rich water, but it's a different story for some of the other sea life.

Crabs, mussels and other crustaceans on the ocean floor can't get out of the danger zone. The lack of oxygen causes them to die.

That amounts to an expensive hit for America's fishing industry.

NOAA estimates the annual cost of algae blooms to U.S. seafood and tourism industries at $82 million or more.

Can oxygen pump breathe life into ocean 'dead zone?'

tesla, not surprised the dead zone is even bigger, that is just what they are telling & want us to know. would like to mention regarding the oxygen depletion in the air quality is poor on this gulf coast for the people. majority of people that live here r having respiratory problems, coughing, sinusitis, just name it. & the humidity is beyond the definition of humid! even the people that come for vacation or holiday notice that they are coughing & nasal drip etc. have lived on this coast for 14 yrs & the air quality change is incredible, it is more than just red tide in the air! btw would not even think of eating any seafood(what is left of it) out of these waters or should be said "pool of poison". our beach waters r heavily polluted with bacteria & media has said caution should be taken regarding swimming in the gulf. the regression of the quality of life on mother earth is beyond heart breaking. btw glad u r back on forum, always enjoyed ur threads be well & blessings to you & all of Project Avalon ! namaste.

With so much salt already in the water, but, with the ice melting in the northern regions, perhaps it can be balanced out with baking soda/bicarbonate, like when cleaning a pool, but not with a bleach shock. Perhaps the ph in the sea creatures are key to how to re-balance it? Any ecologist here with some chemical backround for "NORMAL oceanic componets of sea water for the reef areas?

So... Algae now "sucks up oxygen?" at such a rate that it causes entire areas of the sea to become "Dead Zones" ?

well that's sure as hell new to me, what magical kind of Algae is this? Does it photosynthesize differently than every single other green plant on the planet?

Yes, I agree that algae decomposition can remove some 02 from the water,,, but how much 02 is produced from the photosynthesis, the logic isn't meshing for me.. I'm searching around but I see no data behind this assertion.

is this where the assumption of 02 loss comes from? that is an interesting experiment but its naive to assume something this simple applies directly with no change to the substance that covers 2/3 of the PLANET.

Now the real question is this, Is this a logical fallacy, or just strait lies?

So they just admitted this whole article is basically a scare tactic and that the dead zone is actually smaller than predicted?????

remind me again how hte algae is causing this?

    what about this:
Remains of organisms found within sediment layers near the mouth of the Mississippi River indicate four hypoxic events before the advent of artificial fertilizer.

(that would be before oil spills also)

I'm just a little skeptical here.... please correct me if I'm somehow off base.

CNN has been really bad lately for late reporting and erroneous reporting.
They have to be publicly accused of lying and it has to be obvious before they retract.

This situation w/ the Gulf is very sad.
It was weird how some of the same people who invested in BP right before the well exploded also invested in Waste management Inc., who profited tremendously as a result of the botched cleanup process.

we live in a supremely effed up world and daily i feel worse for the animals and less for the people, although we do have responsibility to help our species even if it seems like a failed effort or doomed...

Well there's a funny thing going on right now, its actually been going on for all time; Change.

Change can be scary, especially when you don't understand it.

I think this is the only thing going on right now, we just need to be a bit less egotistical about it (while still being cautious not to overly impact our environment).

We humans love to polarize, I think it's why we are here; that doesn't mean it's accurate.

Look at Fukushima for an excellent example of what polarization causes... bad information, fear, lack of understanding... that's all that has displaced thousands of people.. no real reason.. no health threat... and we have wide spread suffering for a propaganda piece.

"These nutrients come from "human activities, such as agriculture and wastewater" according to NOAA and the U.S. Geological Survey."

Uh-huh. Blame it on "human activities" to pander to the "humans causing eco-disaster guilt complex." How about the billions of gallons of BP Oil that pumped into the Gulf unabated for eternity? Corporate Media always takes up for Corporate Energy. Just like the whole 'global footprint' horse crap blaming people's SUVs for mega-corporations' mega-polution. Screw CNN and their eternal lying and screw BP, Fukushima, "Natural" Gas Frackers, the MORONS who decided Mercury light bulbs were a good idea, and all the other greed-heads who are destroying NATURE, our LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS. And T Boone Pickens can kiss my ass while they're at it.

Massive red tide bloom washing off Florida's Gulf of Mexico coast

    By Letitia Stein

TAMPA Fla. (Reuters) - The largest red tide bloom seen in Florida in nearly a decade has killed thousands of fish in the Gulf of Mexico and may pose a greater health threat if it washes ashore as expected in the next two weeks, researchers said on Thursday.

The patchy bloom stretches from the curve of the Panhandle to the central Tampa Bay region. It measures approximately 80 miles (130 km) long by 50 miles (80 km) wide.

Red tide occurs when naturally occurring algae bloom out of control, producing toxins deadly to fish and other marine life. The odorless chemicals can trigger respiratory distress in people, such as coughing and wheezing.

"It could have large impacts if it were to move inshore," said Brandon Basino, a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). "It has been killing a lot of marine species, especially fish, as it waits offshore."

The agency has received reports of thousands of dead fish, including snapper, grouper, flounder, crabs, bull sharks, eel and octopus. This is the largest bloom seen since 2006.

The phenomenon has existed for centuries, but such a large bloom is being closely monitored in Florida because it could impact beach tourism and commercial fishing.

A smaller red tide bloom, closer to shore, contributed last year to a record number of deaths among Florida manatees, an endangered sea mammal.

"I have seen analogies that equate red tide with a forest fire," said Kellie Dixon, manager of the ocean technology program at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida. "There is an ecosystem reset."

Researchers at that laboratory recently helped deploy two underwater robots, nicknamed Waldo and Bass, to collect data on the slow-moving red tide, which could linger for months or be rapidly dispersed by a storm.

To map the bloom and try to predict its movement, state wildlife officials also organized this week a three-day boating expedition, sending researchers to test water samples across 2,000 square miles (5,180 sq km).

The team found evidence of red tide at the bottom of the ocean, where it is expected to be swept by currents and carried to land, potentially affecting beaches north and south of Tampa.

"It looks like it's coming in," said Alina Corcoran, an FWC research scientist on the expedition, adding that the bloom would not arrive at once. "All of southwest Florida is not doomed. This is normal. It happens all the time."
