"Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), alleging that APHIS has violated FOIA by routinely failing to respond to requests for records related to genetically engineered (GE) crops, unlawfully delaying its responses, and withholding public disclosure of information."
    .......
“APHIS has a track record of irresponsible and inadequate regulation of GE crops. In the absence of thorough government oversight, public access to information about these crops becomes all the more critical,” said Cristina Stella, staff attorney for Center for Food Safety. “This lawsuit is necessary to stop APHIS from continuing to ignore its duty to provide the public with information that affects farmers, communities, and the environment.”
    .......
The following examples of APHIS’s failure to comply with FOIA illustrate the potential for damage:

New crops evading regulation: APHIS failed to respond to a FOIA request related to GE sorghum, a crop that has completely evaded review and regulation. GE developers are increasingly avoiding regulation by engineering GE crops without inserting transgenes from APHIS’s “plant pest” list. USDA has declared these types of GE crops beyond its authority to regulate, so they receive no federal oversight before potential commercialization. This loophole makes public disclosure of all information related to the unregulated GE crop, like GE sorghum, all the more crucial.

Crops escaping field trials: GE crops that escape the confines of field trials, called “unauthorized releases,” are of particular concern because these GE plants can live in the wild and cross with native plants, or contaminate related conventional or organic crops. Timely public disclosure of information related to releases from field trials is essential for mitigation of these potential harms. CFS has filed several FOIA requests regarding field trials to which APHIS failed to provide timely responses, jeopardizing local farmers and environments.

In 2004, CFS filed a FOIA request related to field trials of GE “Roundup Ready” creeping bentgrass. APHIS delayed its response for over four years; meanwhile, the state of Oregon is still trying to find and destroy escaped feral populations of the GE bentgrass. CFS made another FOIA request regarding GE bentgrass in 2010, to which APHIS took over 5 years to respond.

CFS has made three requests regarding GE wheat field trials since 2002 and APHIS has failed to provide a timely respond each time. In the first instance, CFS had to file a lawsuit to compel APHIS to respond. To date, APHIS has failed to make any response to date to CFS’s most recent request. GE wheat contaminated an Oregon wheat field in 2013, causing millions of dollars of lost revenue for wheat growers in the subsequent years as sensitive foreign markets temporally shut down.

This is the fourth time CFS has had to sue APHIS to compel compliance with FOIA, and is the most extensive challenge to APHIS’s pattern of unreasonable delays to date.

Material below is from the linked article, which speaks of drinking dandelion root tea (a side note is that I am surprised at the many typos in this article, as though it has been translated from another language into English):

Scientists have found that the root of the dandelion plant appears to be “better” than chemotherapy, which “kills” all the cells, and dandelion root only kills cells affected by cancer.

"In addition it has diuretic properties, stimulates the secretion of the bile, cleanses the liver, helps with allergies and reduces cholesterol. It contains very important vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin C, iron, calcium, potassium, folic acid and magnesium. It contains up to 53% of the required daily intake of vitamin K and about 110% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A."

"At the University of Windsor in Canada a research was conducted at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and the results can give hope to cancer patients. It is found out that dandelion root ‘kills ‘the cancer cells without negative effects on the healthy ones. ... A study has shown that dandelion tea acts on the affected cancer cells in a way that they disintegrate...

The article states that one John di Carlo, 72-year-old, ...underwent intensive and “aggressive” chemotherapy treatments during 3 years of his life before the doctors sent him home to spend the last days of life with his loved ones. ...he proposed to drink tea from dandelion root as last hope. After only four months, according to Natural News, this man has experienced cancer remission (partial or complete regression of the disease)!

Be-too-big, thank you for your thanks. Here is some more good news,

    http://naturalsociety.com/monsanto-k...hrough-europe/

First Scotland and Germany booted GMOs from their countries, citing fear of GMO crops contaminating their food supplies and concern over putting their food and beverage industries in jeopardy. Now, Greece and Latvia are telling Monsanto exactly what they can do with their genetically modified crops. The tide is turning. A tipping point just became evident through the actions of two additional European countries who have had enough of the Biotech strong arm.

Latvia and Greece have opted out of GMOs, as are Germany and Scotland, as part of the new allowances indicated in legislation that recently passed for EU countries.

The geographical opt-outs specifically target Monsanto’s MON810 GM Maize, which countries may choose to grow or refuse in the next several months. This is currently the only genetically modified crop allowed to be grown within the EU at present – but only when countries give specific permission.

As Sustainable Pulse explains, “while the European Commission is responsible for approvals, requests to be excluded also have to be submitted to the company making the application i.e. Monsanto for MON810.

If additional member states deny Monsanto, we can be assured that the biotech company will try to find other ways to force their GM crops on the world (e.g. the Trans Pacific Trade partnership) but as we collectively say NO, upholding bans, and demanding labeling, we will rid this planet of the plague that is genetically modified food.

McCormick to Officially Go Organic, GMO-Free Soon
According to this article from the website Food Dive, the company has announced that a huge majority of its spices and herbs will be organic and non-GMO by the year 2016.
In total, about 80% of its products will meet the new standard. New labels will also adorn the familiar McCormick packages, with over 70% expected to sport new “non-GMO” labels according to the article.

(Of course, I remember decades ago that MOLD was a problem in spices, and I do not know if this problem has been or is concurrently being addressed.)

California EPA To Label Monsanto’s Roundup As A Cancer Causing Chemical

It was announced this week that the California Environmental Protection Agency is planning to label Monsanto’s RoundUp herbicide as a cancer-causing chemical. This is just the most recent warning that has been leveled against the chemical by environmental and health groups around the world. In the past year, government agencies have finally caught up with activists who have been protesting against Monsanto and their dangerous products for years.

In a statement released earlier this year, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that glyphosate, the main ingredient in RoundUp, is “probably carcinogenic.”

This week, the EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment in California released a “notice of intent” to label the product as a carcinogen. Meanwhile, the issue is up for discussion for California residents, who have until October 5th to speak their mind on the measure. Due to a law passed in the state in 1986 called Proposition 65, the state is required to publish a list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer birth defects or reproductive problems. Now that glyphosate is now on that list officially worldwide, the state is required to add it to the list.

MEALWORMS CONVERT SYTROFOAM TO USEABLE SOIL

    http://www.computernerds.co.uk/blog/...o-usable-soil/

New research could have staggering implications for plastic waste pollution: An international team of researchers found that the Darkling Beetle larvae, the mealworm, can subsist on a diet of Styrofoam and other forms of polystyrene.

In an ongoing worm study, Stanford engineers collaborated with researchers at the University of China and found that microorganisms in the guts of the common mealworm biodegrade Styrofoam. The process produces carbon dioxide and a usable waste that appears to be safe for crop use.

In the lab, 100 mealworms ate between 34 and 39 milligrams – the weight of small pill – of Styrofoam per day. The worms converted the plastic into carbon dioxide, and within 24 hours excreted the rest as biodegradable fragments that look like rabbit droppings. Styrofoam has long been considered non-biodegradable, and the new results have been described as shocking.

“Our findings have opened a new door to solve the global plastic pollution problem,” Wei-Min Wu, co-author of the two companion studies on the subject and a senior research engineer at Stanford University, said in a statement.

Wu said the mealworms, despite being fed a steady diet of plastic, were as healthy as those on a normal diet and that their waste appeared to be safe to use as soil for crops.

The latest findings build on earlier research with waxworms, the larvae of Indian mealmoths, whose own internal microorganisms can biodegrade polyethylene, a plastic used in filmy trash bags.

The research is “the first to provide detailed evidence of bacterial degradation of plastic in an animal’s gut.” Further work is needed to reveal how bacteria within the mealworms carry out this feat, which could potentially provide new opportunities for the safe management of plastic waste.

The two papers were published this month in Environmental Science and Technology.

“There’s a possibility of really important research coming out of bizarre places,” said Craig Criddle, a professor of civil and environmental engineering who supervises Wu and others at Stanford. “Sometimes, science surprises us. This is a shock.”

Researchers plan to study whether microorganisms within mealworms and other insects can biodegrade plastics such polypropylene (used in textile products and automotive components), microbeads (used as exfoliants), and bioplastics (derived from renewable biomass sources such as corn or biogas methane).

The long-term goal is to isolate the bioenzymes used by the microorganisms to break down the plastics, which could result in new methods of reducing plastic waste that are already in the environment, and to create new types of bio-plastics that won’t accumulate on land or at sea.

Every year, Americans throw away 2.5 billion plastic foam cups, representing just a fraction of the 33 million tons of plastic discarded. Less than 10 percent gets recycled, and the remainder has led to water contamination and animal poisoning.

    "People grow for one another."

A community farm, where people band together to help feed one another - this extends into communities where people band together to help solve their problems.

Each of the 12 farmers on this co-operative farm is responsible for two to three vegetables at the farm; they care for their specific crops from start to finish. But when it comes time to harvest, everyone shares what they've produced. That's what's the farmers in the co-op appreciate most — everyone puts in the effort, but everyone shares the rewards as well. It's about working together and counting on each other at a time when there isn't much else you can always count on.
