Here's the most marvelous, heart-wrenching, and inspiring true-story film, Rabbit-Proof Fence.
This is the extraordinary story of three young Aborigine girls, aged 14, 10 and 8, who escaped from their forced indoctrination school, 1,500 miles (2400 km) from their home — and followed a fence, at the time by far the longest in the world, across the desert, that led them all the way back to their village where they arrived nine weeks later. This really happened, in 1931.

It's a staggering story, and particularly interesting is the character played by Kenneth Branagh: A. O. Neville, a local public servant, the "Chief Protector of Aborigines" in Western Australia. (This was his real title.)

Branagh expertly portrays Neville as a good man, who means no harm, but is simply a product of his Colonial era. His depiction is poignant and (for me) deeply thought-provoking. He was an educated and cultured man, dedicated to serving the community. Anyone now would brand him as a clear-cut racist... but he himself did not know that.

Yep, great film and an amazing sound track.

All of the music was done by Peter Gabriel and the soundtrack album is called Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit Proof Fence. There's a great mini-film (only 6 minutes) where Peter talks about the recording process here:

I recently enjoyed these two movies on Amazon Prime.

    Shana: The Wolf's Music
A coming-of-age story about Shana, a gifted violinist who befriends a wolf that guides her through her spiritual journey as she reconnects with her ancestors and makes peace with her mother's death. Filmed with the People of the Creeks, the Lower Nicola Indian Band near Merritt, BC. A moving, magical, and yet authentic inter-cultural motion picture.

    Brothers of the Wind
In a world where it takes courage to fly, a young boy nurtures a baby eagle into adulthood. Searching for their place in the world, they bond over their desire to be free. [Note: The scenery is stunning!]

Two of the most beautiful movies I have seen in recent years are:

    The Scent of Green Papaya
Directed by Anh Hung Tran. With Nu Yên-Khê Tran, Man San Lu, Thi Loc Truong, Anh Hoa Nguyen. A Vietnamese servant girl, Mui, observes lives within two different Saigon families: the first, a woman textile seller with three boys and a frequently absent husband; the second, a handsome young pianist with his fiancée.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring is a 2003 South Korean film directed by Kim Ki-duk about a Buddhist monastery that floats on a lake in a pristine forest. The story is about the life of a Buddhist monk as he passes through the seasons of his life, from childhood to old age

I haven't seen either movie in over ten years so can't recall the nuance and subtleties but they stand out in my memory as having much beauty and depth of feeling.

This film fits the thread title to a tee. Currently on Netflix in Canada. So powerful and sorely needed!

I just saw this film from 2013 tonight. It's worth a watch if you like Schroedinger's cat and enjoy thinking along with the very clever plot. Made for only $50,000 it proves you dont need a huge budget to make a clever sci fi film. Also amazing is that all the dialogue is improvised by the ensemble cast
there are plenty of explanations of the film on youtube if you get confused

    Lion (2016)

    The trailer:

This is the staggering, dramatized true story of a young Indian boy who falls asleep on a long-distance train and finds himself only able to get off 1000 miles from home — and the little kid has absolutely no idea where home is.

So he's treated as an orphan, and is eventually adopted by an Australian family, where he grows up to be a young man. But he's haunted by the need to find his original Indian roots.

In the end, against all apparent odds, he succeeds — by poring over Google Earth for months on end, till he eventually spots a feature he clearly recognizes from his childhood memory. He returns to the small village of his birth.... and, 25 years later, is reunited with his unbelieving, tearful, elderly mother.

Like the marvelous, inspiring Rabbit-Proof Fence (which I shared a few posts ago here), the end of the film shows actual, real-world photos, having the effect of stunning one into full understanding that this all really, really happened.

I highly recommend The Sense of Wonder a French movie with English subtitles. It's free on Amazon Prime.

Following is a review that I totally agree with:

I almost did not watch this movie because of subtitles since it is a French film. I am delighted that I did look at it. This movie, The Sense of Wonder, in essence fills the senses. Seeing. Hearing. Touching. Tasting. Smelling. In simple, quiet beauty it gives a glimpse of what life should be. Could be if lived in truth, honesty, justice, respect, quietness of spirit, appreciation. All these are summed up in Love, with a capital L. The Creator of all these senses and attributes, beauty and wonder is God. "God IS love." I hope I can find a copy of this movie to buy for my own. Thank you Amazon Prime for making it available.

Not sure if this movie is thought provoking (probably not inspiring) but is germane to present situation - maybe some fear porn. I'd watch it just to see how it all ends.

'Four years into quarantine the virus has changed and so have we...

In the terrifying thriller SONGBIRD, the COVID-23 virus has mutated and the world is in its fourth year of lockdown. Infected Americans are ripped from their homes and forced into quarantine camps known as Q-Zones, from which there is no escape, as a few brave souls fight back against the forces of oppression. Amid this dystopian landscape, a fearless courier, Nico (KJ Apa), who’s immune to the deadly pathogen, finds hope and love with Sara (Sofia Carson), though her lockdown prohibits them from physical contact. When Sara is believed to have become infected, Nico races desperately across the barren streets of Los Angeles in search of the only thing that can save her from imprisonment ... or worse.

The first feature film to be made during COVID-19 in Los Angeles, and about the pandemic itself, SONGBIRD also stars Bradley Whitford and Demi Moore as a wealthy couple who may hold the key to Nico’s mission; Alexandra Daddario as a singer enmeshed in a messy and forbidden affair; Paul Walter Hauser as a disabled veteran whose best friend – a drone named Max – is his eyes and ears to a world that has left him behind; Craig Robinson as Nico’s boss; and Peter Stormare as the corrupt head of the city’s “sanitation” department, which seizes those infected and transports them to the Q-Zone.

    Genre: Sci-Fi Thriller
Cast: KJ Apa, Sofia Carson, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario, with Paul Walter Hauser and Demi Moore
Writers: Adam Mason & Simon Boyes
    Director: Adam Mason
Producers: Michael Bay, Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, Jeanette Volturno, Adam Goodman, Andrew Sugerman, Eben Davidson
    Release: Coming Soon'

I really enjoyed The Ride, a movie on Amazon Prime. It is based on the true story of a BMX champion who overcame an abusive childhood through the love and life lessons of his interracial foster family.

    Dark Waters

Inspired by the true story of Robert Bilott, an attorney who took on the DuPont company in an environmental suit exposing a decades-long history of chemical pollution in drinking water.

During the film references are made to The Manhatten Project where certain discoveries were made, not the first time I've seen reference to TMP in connection with fluoride - may have been connected with the decision to flouridate America's water.

I have this movie on my "to see list" - the subject matter, actor (Gabriel Bryne) and music (Leonard Cohen) is a big draw.

'Inspired by the work of Leonard Cohen, and set to some of his most beloved music, DEATH OF A LADIES' MAN tells the story of Samuel O'Shea (GABRIEL BYRNE), a carousing college professor whose life takes a series of unimaginable turns, and all the old stories are given a new twist, when he begins to have surreal hallucinations and learns he may not be long for this world.

In the thought-provoking category I'd recommend Apichatpong Weerasethakul films. I particularly like:

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (Thai: ลุงบุญมีระลึกชาติ; RTGS: Lung Bunmi Raluek Chat)

Tropical Malady (RTGS: Satpralat; lit. "monster"):

'Thousands of years ago in ancient Tibet, there existed a vast kingdom known as Zhang Zhung, whose religion Bön has continued throughout history. Today at Menri Monastery in Northern India and Triten Norbutse in Kathmandu Nepal, young monks and nuns carry on the Bön teachings and lineage, not only in the lands of the Himalayas, but also to countries around the world, where Western students now embrace Bön methods and practices for finding compassion and joy, amidst the technological and often chaotic world. The documentary brings to life the evolving manifestations of this ancient religion in France, Poland, Mexico, India, and the United States.'

Mr. Nobody is a tale about choice. Nemo, a nine year old boy, has been thrust into a position where he must make an impossible decision - to choose between his mother and father. In the seconds preceding the rest of his life he wonders where each choice will take him. The forces of the universe working to bring about total chaos are counteracted by this boy's overactive imagination.
