Now southern BC is all flooded ...

Entire city of Merrit )along with a few other small towns) is evacuated - completely flooded. Most major highways in and around the lower mainland are closed, flooded, or destroyed ... Massive rainfall hit the entire northwest, including into washington, and east into the interior of BC.

Transportation of goods from the coast (where everything comes from) will be down for several days, as roads need major repairs.

Not giant rockfall this time (see here and here on the previous page), but a giant avalanche. Large avalanches are common in the Himalayas, but they're not often caught on camera except (sometimes) by climbers on the mountain.

This one occurred yesterday in the remote Mustang region of Nepal. It blew downslope with so much force that it soared over the front ranges to the valleys below, forcing people in nearby villages to flee. In Kobang village, at least 11 people were injured, not by the avalanche itself, but by falls that they took as they made their escape. Teachers and children in a local school rushed from their classrooms as the snow tsunami barreled toward them.

What struck me is these very rustic peoples living in primitive, wilderness countries where life probably hasn't changed much in hundreds of years, all have modern mobile phones. I think that's fascinating.

A bit of a follow-up on the massive flooding in BC.

There's no rail access into or out of Vancouver and no highway access either. Vancouver is a port city and pretty much all imported goods into western Canada goes through Vancouver.

I went to pick up a few groceries yesterday, and everyone was panic buying - no dairy, no eggs, no bread, no cheese, etc. all the shelves empty. The other grocery store was the same deal. On the bright side though, there was still toilet paper - people probably still had a stockpile of that from COVID panic buying.

One woman is confirmed dead in landslide near Lillooet, BC, and many are still missing, but presumed dead.

Another 1,100 homes evacuated from Sumas Prairie near Abbotsford. Pumping station flooded and might fail causing more flooding.

The fires we had this summer were a precursor to all the land and mudslides across the province. Headlines everywhere pushing the climate change agenda.

Here the BBC immediately uses the tragedy to promote the agenda: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59324764 (Edit: they totally reworked the article and changed the title since posting - I guess they got called out on it)

Canadian air force is being called in to help with evacuations and support supply lines.

There's a lot of agricultural land in the lower mainland - food supplies will be affected.

‘A Major Catastrophe’: BC Storm Could Leave Lasting Impact
By Jeff Sandes November 17, 2021 Updated: November 17, 2021
SURREY, British Columbia—While torrential rain has stopped throughout British Columbia’s Lower Mainland, fallout from the storm threatens to leave a lasting impact on much of the province.

Mudslides continue to block major highways, and with extensive damage in some of the main arteries connecting the area to the rest of the country, there is no clear estimate as to when road access in many areas may be restored. Many communities are left isolated, and travellers and commercial truck drivers are stranded throughout B.C.

Floodwaters cover Highway 1 in Abbotsford, B.C., on Nov. 16, 2021. (The Canadian Press/Jonathan Hayward)
RCMP recovered the body of a woman from a landslide near Lillooet, some 160 km northeast of Vancouver, on Nov. 16, while a search continues for others who are missing.

“This is a major catastrophe, not only for this region in terms of the displacement of thousands of people and the impacts on people, property, and animals, but also the fact that this is one of the major bread baskets of the country,” says David Leis, a vice president with the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, who is a resident of Abbotsford, a city near the U.S. border about 70 km southeast of Vancouver.

“We have major infrastructure failure. This also means that Canada’s largest port, the Port of Vancouver, is highly limited in its activity, and that is a disaster for the whole country, particularly given the current supply chain challenges.”

As of Nov. 17, main road and rail services to and from the port remained cut off. The port, which handles $1 out of every $3 of Canada’s trade in goods outside of the continent, is crucial for Canada’s supply chains, already in stress as part of a wider global pandemic-led disruption of supply links.

    Isolation and Evacuations

On Nov. 16, Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun issued an urgent evacuation order for all residents of Sumas Prairie, an area south of the city, as a key pumping station fighting water levels in the region was on the brink of becoming inoperable with rising waters.

The low-lying area is home to major farming and agricultural operations.

“I know it’s hard for farmers to leave their livestock, but people’s lives are more important to me than livestock and chickens. We’ll deal with the rest come morning,” Braun said at a news conference.

Further north in the central interior, the residents of Merritt, with a population of 7,000 people, were evacuated on Nov. 15 because of flooding from the Coldwater River and from the collapse of the city’s sewage treatment plant. Locals were forced to travel to Kamloops, Kelowna, and Salmon Arm for safety, with officials saying the evacuation may last at least one week or more.

In Hope, about 122 km east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley, which became isolated from the rest of the province due to road damage, rescue crews earlier in the week airlifted to safety 275 people caught between two separate slides on Highway 7 west of the community.

Lorne Marchildon was on his way home from Osoyoos to Cloverdale, some 45 kilometres southeast of Vancouver, on Nov. 14 and has been stranded in Hope ever since.

“Tonight will be my fourth night sleeping in my truck,” Marchildon said in an interview on Nov. 17, adding that he didn’t want to go to the shelters for stranded travellers so that there’s more room for others who need it.

“At the beginning, there was a lot of hope that they’re going to fix it, they’re going to get us through. But now, there’s no one in the streets anymore. People are just waiting now because they’re exhausted.”

Marchildon says he was in the area when the mudslides hit Highway 7 between Hope and Aggasiz on Nov. 14.

“I saw the disaster. I saw the people running around screaming for their kids in the dark. It was just terrible.”

Elsewhere in the province, stores with empty shelves are a common sight as panic buying and supply chain route disruptions deplete fresh food supplies. Segments of oil and gas pipelines were also shut off temporarily due to flooding and debris flows.

The province declared a state of emergency on Nov. 17, with Premier John Horgan saying it will give the province more options to respond to the natural disaster.

Bill Blair, the federal minister of emergency preparedness, said on Nov. 17 that the Canadian Forces will deploy air support personnel to assist with evacuation efforts, support supply chain routes, and protect residents against floods and landslides.

‘Uncertainty Creates a Lot of Stress’

Ray Nickel, a board member with the BC Chicken Marketing Board, says his organization is following the developments closely.

“From what we understand, our farm families are safe, so that’s obviously our number one concern,” Nickel said in an interview. “And then, corresponding with that, obviously, we’re very concerned about our animals and the safety and welfare of those. You can imagine, the uncertainty creates a lot of stress, especially when you’re threatened like this.”

Search and rescue personnel help flood evacuees disembark from a helicopter in Agassiz, B.C., on Nov. 15, 2021. (The Canadian Press/Jonathan Hayward)
The BC Milk Marketing Board issued a statement to its producers on Nov. 16 saying that farms in many areas in the Fraser Valley, the Interior, and Northern B.C. will not have their milk picked up until further notice. The board asked the producers to dispose of their milk responsibly into their manure pit.

This exacerbates a milk shortage throughout the province where grocery stores outside of Greater Vancouver have already run out of dairy supplies because shipments were stalled from the highway closures.

Dave Earle, CEO of the BC Truckers Association, encouraged residents to remain calm and trust the industry to get food and supplies to them.

“What’s really important for everybody to realize is the goods will get there. It just may take a little longer, they may cost a little more, but the goods will get there,” Earle in an interview with CFJC Today in Kamloops.

Rob Fleming, B.C.’s minister of transportation and infrastructure, said his department is focused on getting the roads repaired and supply chain routes cleared.

“We fully recognize how important it is now in British Columbia to reopen the road connections from the Lower Mainland to the Interior to get supply chains moving again,” Fleming said on Nov. 16.

I live just south of Vancouver Island, I can see it out my window. The straights of Juan De Fuca is our only separation. We have had unusually heavy rain here but there has been nothing at all like you guys are experiencing. One year it's fires the next it's a monsoon. The rain has stopped here for a couple days. We went literally all summer with no rain, to rain almost every day, that is very unusual.

Thank god you have toilet paper. I don't mean to make light of your situation with essential needs, isn't it amazing how much we rely on things coming from overseas.

Haha! No worries. My mother and I are all good, we stocked up over the last year or so, and we can live without dairy products and eggs for a while (I was getting local eggs, but I need to find a new source - there's lots around here but I imagine they're selling out at this time). I do feel sorry though for people who didn't, or don't have the luxury of ability, to keep a months worth of goods on hand. They're going to be feeling the effects from this the most.

Catastrophic Floods in British Colombia Shown in Aerial Footage

"Agricultural Disaster" in British Columbia, Canada

A powerful storm dumped a month’s worth of rain in two days across parts of the Pacific Northwest in the U.S. and Canada. B.C. Agriculture Minister Lana Popham said hundreds of farms homes, roads, and bridges have been affected provincewide. Nearly in tears, she described the widespread flooding as an 'agricultural disaster'.

Some footage of the flooding in the Abbotsford / Sumas are from helicopters views and from people trapped on the Coquihalla highway. One of the most amazing parts of this flooding, was the breadth of land that was affected - imagine an area the size of some US states being entirely inundated. BC has now declared a state of emergency, all the store shelves where I am are even far more empty than when I last went to check. I managed to get THE last bag a cat food from the two main grocery stores for my newly acquired cat. People are still hording like assholes, the one grocery store got a small shipment of dairy and apparently one woman took almost all the milk for herself - 13 gallon jugs. Like WTH is wrong with some people?

I'm guessing the RV park had fire insurance but not flood insurance ...

'At least one person has died and 41 are injured after Indonesia's Semeru volcano on Java island erupted on Saturday, spewing out huge clouds of smoke and ash.

Videos shared by emergency officials showed residents running as towering plumes of smoke and ash blanketed nearby villages in East Java province.

Authorities are setting up evacuation tents, the country's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB) said, but evacuations have been hampered by thick smoke.

Semeru Volcano Eruption Update; Explosive Eruptions Occurs, Tall Ash Plume

    Dec 4, 2021

    GeologyHub

The Semeru volcano in Indonesia just produced its largest volcanic eruption since record keeping began. This sent a plume of ash, sending a plume of ash 15,000 meters or 49,000 feet into the atmosphere. This ash subsequently rained down on the island of Java, leading to near blackout conditions as the day seemingly turned to night. What had just occurred was a large "pelean" style eruption caused by the collapse of the lava dome at Semeru. So, what will happen next? What evacuations should be ordered? This video will answer these two questions and discuss the ongoing eruption. BC does have a few hot spots that regularly can reach into the high 30's and low 40's - Ashcroft, Kamloops, Osoyoos, Oliver, Kelowna, Lytton are some of them, but those were the places hardest hit in this heat wave. A school in Osoyoos registered 51C at one point, but its an "unofficial" temp.
You're basically saying it can be as hot as the Arabian peninsula in summer, while being as cold as the arctic circle in winter. Jeez, that's a strange and quite extreme contrast to live with. I think I'm rather glad of our Atlantic gulf stream that keeps the UK mild year round. This is probably one of the few places on earth where it can be identical weather of 12C and raining on January 1st and July 1st respectively. We can get snow and ice and the occasional summer heatwave, sure, but it's rarely extreme and such spells don't last long.

    ...
Woke up to -40(c/f) this morning, with a windchill factor of -48c (-54.5f) ... glad I got my shoveling all done yesterday when it was a nice balmy -28c. So that's an 80c (176F) swing in temps from the 40c+ we had last summer.

30,000 Evacuated, Hundreds of Homes Burned in Fast-Moving Colorado Wildfires
    Jack Phillips
    Dec 31, 2021
    https://www.ntd.com/30000-evacuated-...ign=2021-10-20

"Tens of thousands of people were evacuated and hundreds of homes were destroyed as wildfires spread near Denver, Colorado.

The fires are moving in Boulder County, located north of Denver, prompting Gov. Jared Polis to declare an emergency.

Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle said there could be more injuries and deaths than reported due to the speed and intensity of the fire, known as the Marshall Fire.

“This is the kind of fire we can’t fight head-on,” Pelle told The Associated Press. “We actually had deputy sheriffs and firefighters in areas that had to pull out because they just got overrun.”

Within hours, the blaze had swept an estimated 1,600 acres and destroyed more than 500 homes, Pelle told reporters at a news briefing.

“We know that approximately 370 homes in the Sagamore subdivision … have been lost. There’s a potential of 210 homes lost in Old Town Superior,” Pelle said at a news conference Thursday.“Due to the magnitude and intensity of this fire, and its presence in such a heavily populated area, we would not be surprised if there are injuries or fatalities,” he continued.

Evacuation orders were first issued for all residents in the town of Superior, Colorado, with a population of about 13,000, and a short time later for the adjacent municipality of Louisville, home to more than 18,000 residents, the Boulder County emergency management office said on Twitter. The swiftly spreading prairie grass fire was believed to have been ignited by sparks from power lines and transformers toppled by high winds on Colorado’s drought-parched Front Range, according to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.

Overnight, authorities lifted all evacuation orders and pre-evacuation warnings for residents outside of Boulder County, including residents in Broomfield and Westminster due to cooler temperatures and potential snow.

“It will be very chilly as we ring in the new year tonight. At midnight, temperatures will be in the teens to single digits while wind chills will be below zero in spots. Snow will be falling across the majority of the area at midnight,” the National Weather Service in Boulder said.

Polis declared a state of emergency allowing use of disaster funding to support emergency response efforts in Boulder County and to allow mobilization of the Colorado National Guard and other state resources as needed.

The fire on the outskirts of the Denver metropolitan area, left dry from drought gripping eastern Colorado, follows several days of heavy snow in the Rocky Mountains to the west. However, forecasts call for snow to hit Denver and eastern Colorado starting on Friday.

    Reuters contributed to this report.

Temperatures here dropped 20 degrees celsius overnight last night, from a daytime high of +3 to -18 overnight in some places.

Not as cold as out west right now - BC does not usually get so cold on the coast, but they have had a lot of snow recently and the interior (where Dedukshyn is) is very cold. I expect this will be hard on some of the trees there.

Although we get low temperatures here in the winter months, the extreme changes which are happening more often these days catch you by surprise.

We get a couple inches of snow, then it all melts and there is water everywhere then it freezes and everything is ice.

I have driven the Coquihalla highway many times - it is a challenging highway when the conditions are perfect due to the changing elevations.

I feel bad for Merritt (interior) and the Fraser Valley (closer to Vancouver) - such pretty spots in a large valley areas.
