Temperatures here dropped 20 degrees celsius overnight last night, from a daytime high of +3 to -18 overnight in some places.

Not as cold as out west right now - BC does not usually get so cold on the coast, but they have had a lot of snow recently and the interior (where Dedukshyn is) is very cold. I expect this will be hard on some of the trees there.

Although we get low temperatures here in the winter months, the extreme changes which are happening more often these days catch you by surprise.

We get a couple inches of snow, then it all melts and there is water everywhere then it freezes and everything is ice.
You are on the island somewhere? -18c is pretty much unheard of that far west. I think both Victoria and Vancouver have broken cold records this year. BC can't catch a break .. first a massive extreme heatwave, then literally fires everywhere, then multiple "atmospheric rivers", and the flooding and landslides that came with it, now extreme cold and snow ... I'm sitting at -27c (-17f) today, but the day before yesterday it was -1c. We're on the edge of the high pressure system that is holding the cold. We have lots of snow again this year as well, similar to last year.

And to update on the flooding, one of the major highways that was closed is now re-opened, and one more to go. Then we should almost be be back to normal as far as supplies and logistics go. My ex (works in a grocery store in Calgary) says there's still some items they aren't getting regularly that would need to come from Vancouver. Supplies are pretty good here, some things like cheese and dairy still run out occasionally.

When you are one step ahead of the crowd, you are a genius.
Two steps ahead, and you are deemed a crackpot.

Sorry for the confusing post - I used to live in B.C. and have a lot of friends there. I am now in Ontario.

'MYSTERIOUS FLASH CAUGHT ON CAMERA FOLLOWED BY MASSIVE EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA'

'A CCTV camera in China’s Qinghai recorded a flash of light right before an earthquake on Saturday.

The footage shows the sky light up mere seconds before the tremors began from the 6.9-magnitude earthquake, according to local seismologists.

The quake led to 9 people being injured and even a small, two-meter, section of the Great Wall of China collapsing.'

    "At a Glance
Waves between 1 and 4 feet were reported from Alaska to California.
Two people were taken to the hospital after being swept into the water while fishing in California.
Some coastal areas in Japan were evacuated.
The tsunami was generated by an undersea volcano in the South Pacific.
Waves between 1 and 4 feet were reported from California to Alaska Saturday after a tsunami advisory was issued because of a volcanic eruption in the South Pacific.

The advisory was issued for Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific Coast including California, Oregon, Washington and parts of Alaska early Saturday morning after the undersea volcano erupted near the island nation of Tonga.

A wave of 4.3 feet was reported in Port San Luis California, according to the National Weather Service. Large waves were also reported in King Cove, Alaska, La Push, Washington, and several other locations.

Two people were transported to the hospital after being swept into the water Saturday afternoon at San Gregorio State Beach, according to local fire officials. One was taken by helicopter."

"Across the Pacific, evacuations were ordered in parts of Japan, according to the Yomiuri Shimbun. The newspaper, citing local emergency officials, reported that some 153,000 people were told to leave their homes in coastal areas.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said early Saturday morning that waves and fluctuations in sea level were expected to start in Alaska around 6:15 a.m. local time. The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services said waves could arrive in some coastal areas around 7 a.m. PST with a peak of about 1 to 2 feet. Waves were possible in the San Francisco area around 8 a.m., according to the tsunami warning center.

In Japan, the country's meteorological agency warned that a wave up to about 9 feet high could hit the Amami and Tokara islands, part of the Ryukyu chain southwest of mainland Japan. Local news reports said evacuations were issued in some areas. The chain also includes Okinawa, home to tens of thousands of U.S. military personnel. An advisory was issued there with waves up to 3 feet possible.

Waves of about 1 foot to over 2 feet slammed ashore in some areas of Hawaii.

The tsunami also reportedly pushed boats out of the water and onto docks in the state.

Drought, Fires, Floods, Mudslides and One Devastating Deep Freeze: The Images of 2021
    December 21, 2021
    https://weather.com/photos/news/2021...os-of-the-year

    (Slideshow at the link)

"This year brought numerous weather disasters and countless opportunities to snap images of the power of nature.

The ongoing drought in the West and unrelenting heat waves fueled wildfires that burned towns to the ground, such as historic Greenville, California, which was burned in August by the Dixie Fire, the second-largest wildfire in state history.

Hurricanes pounded the East Coast. Hurricane Ida, for example, left a trail of damage from Louisiana to New York. Tornadoes wiped out homes and lives, particularly the Dec. 10 outbreak that left dozens of people dead.

And in one of the biggest stories of the year, Texas plunged into a deep freeze that collapsed the power grid, leaving millions of people without power and heat. Hundreds were killed.

We’ve compiled a slideshow of both the most devastating and awe-inspiring imagery of the last year. While this year’s climate change-driven weather disasters brought immeasurable suffering and destruction, photographers still caught fleeting moments of beauty, such as the solar eclipse in June and New Orleans homes decorated in lieu of Mardi Gras floats as the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the traditional parades.

Click through the slideshow for a visual tour of 2021 in weather and nature imagery."

'In the last 24 hours we've seen a huge explosive volcanic eruption from the Tongan island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai - the blast is so large it's easily visible from multiple satellites in geostationary orbit, tens of thousands of miles up. The blast sent a soundwave around the world which is still being measured and the resulting tsunami caused flooding around the pacific ocean.'

Whenever I feel like we have bad weather here, I come and look at some of these videos and then I feel luckier than many others have it.

We did get a lot of snow today (southern Ontario Canada) - it was coming down at a rate between 2-5cm per hour. Most places around here ended up with 40-60cm of snow.

The worst is that it is very cold, so the snow is blowing around creating white-out conditions on the roads and making big drifts in some places.

Along my driveway, there are a couple drifts that come up to almost my waist.

The worst part is the entrance to the driveway where the snow plow has gone by creating a big load of heavy snow mixed with sand and salt from the road.

I have a bit of work to do before I will be able to get out of the driveway!

    STORM EUNICE BATTERS UK

    - Record gust of 122mph recorded -

One very wild night/day here as a major Atlantic storm system makes landfall across Ireland and the UK.
    • The UK is being battered by Storm Eunice, which forecasters warn could be one of the worst UK storms in three decades
    • A wind gust of 122mph at the Needles on the Isle of Wight is provisionally the highest gust ever recorded in England, the Met Office says
    • People are being urged to avoid travelling if they can and stay at home when winds reach top speeds
    • For the first time, the Met Office has issued a red warning for wind - the highest level - for London, the South East and parts of the east of England, in place until 15:00 GMT
    • There are yellow warnings for snow, ice and wind in Northern Ireland and Scotland with disruption expected
    • Hundreds of schools are closed, and many trains and flights have been cancelled

Dramatic footage shows the moment a huge wave smashes through the window of a commuter ferry

Strange how the guy in the red jacket took so long to react..

    from comments:
A few details: it happened on the Elbe estuary from where bigger waves due to the storm. The passengers were Airbus employees who are used to taking this type of ferry as we take the bus every morning. The Airbus factory at its own pier. No serious injuries among the 8 passengers because the windows are made of tempered glass so even the front passenger only had minor cuts.

A tree got blown over my neighbours garden during our red wind weather warning in the south east of England. I wondered what the thump was. It missed my neighbours house but their birdbath got a direct hit.

This was posted on the Breaking News thread, but belongs here too, I think.

That phenomena of birds falling from the sky is explained by Ben Davidson of SuspiciousObservers youtube channel, and he has featured the same video there to demonstrate it.
He says it's due to fluctuations in the earth's magnetic layer, and that is due to the Sun and the 12,000 year cycle of Magnetic Pole Reversal, which he says we are beginning to experience again now, and will be for the next 20 years or so, ending with a catastrophic nova-like killshot from the Sun.
He reports that it happened all over the earth and all on the same day, which I think also testifies to the accuracy of his predictions and understanding of how magnetism works, since it was no mystery to him at all.

It appears this kind of weird phenomena is just the beginning of what's in store for our planet and those who will live to see it in the next decade or two.

Astounding. I've never seen or heard of anything like this in all of my days. From Chihuahua, Mexico.

Bigger problems in the world right now but this rain is f*cking relentless.

Queensland is flooding, six deceased so far, others missing, thousands are being evacuated, and they began releasing the dam this morning. And it just keeps raining....harder. Oh, awesome, I hear thunder now as I type this. This is going to require quite the clean up, I don’t know where all this water is going to go though, or how long it will take, since the ground was already soaked from over two years of unusually wet weather now.

The train station down the road is closed, been flooded since yesterday, but we’re still ok here up the hill a bit, with a superb drainage system, which is just as well because our non-inoculated arses are excluded from the kinds of venues they use for evacuation centres.

Flooding update. It’s also flooding in parts of NSW and other parts of QLD but I’ll keep this update to Brisbane. The mood in the city has declined to tense and anxious.

Another storm came and joined the storm I posted earlier and now there’s another. The weather was forecasted to ease today after days of constant rain but it became heavier last night and still hasn’t eased at the time of writing this post. We weren’t warned about it being this bad and the Premier’s excuse was that it was an unforeseen cyclone and said there’s a “rain bomb” over the city. Well I wouldn’t call the storms cyclonic, more like a depression with the amount of water that arrives after a cyclone. Regardless, how does one miss that? Like they missed the “inland tsunami” that killed all those people in Toowoomba during the 2012 floods. And what exactly is a rain bomb?

About two or so hours ago our yard began flooding, still no worries here (a bowl effect) but because we’re on higher ground I knew things would be getting scary in other parts of the city, since if it’s totally saturated here now then the waters would be rising more rapidly elsewhere. Sure enough, reports of pockets flooding within fifteen minutes came in and water also began coming out of the drains.

The supermarkets are closed or have been stripped, at least one water plant is down, water is reaching the second story in some parts, hundreds and hundreds of roads are closed (including the highway), the largest dam is at 175% last I looked, another at over 150%, and people have been told to stay home and we’ll be updated throughout the night. I don’t like it, way too many lives at risk. I’ve been feeling really tense since it began raining days ago, now I know why.

It’s hard to convey the amount of water here but here are a few more pics that have been tweeted.

This before and after was tweeted 27 hours ago.

There are a lot of power outages and I won’t have time to do anymore updates until the aftermath but here’s a local radio station covering it, for anyone who has friends and family here. To any friends who see this, don’t worry about me, there’s no way we’re going to a council emergency centre, we have emergency food and water supplies, and I have a kayak.

Exactly how unusual are these heavy rain events Innocent Warrior? When I think of Australia, 'heavy rain' is very low on the list of things that come to mind. Especially given that it's summer where you are right now. A year or two ago it was droughts and wildfires across huge areas of your country. Now this. Is this considered just unusually wet for this area and time of year, or is it totally, totally extraordinary?

We have a break in the weather in Brisbane and it is glorious. After hearing that hammering for days on end it’s nice to just soak up the peace and quiet. It’s heating up again pretty quickly and it‘s humid but the weather is good today.

Residents received emergency alerts last night at 9pm, river flooding was likely (no **** Sherlock) and we were to evacuate if required. It was still raining hard then but I ended up going to bed shortly after 11pm.

Currently, the waters are receding, the ground is sodden, hard to say how long it will take to completely recede and dry out, I’m guessing lower areas will have some trouble with that for a bit. I’m currently looking at a blue sky with big, white, fluffy clouds. It is forecasted to remain like this for today, tomorrow and Wednesday, then we’re back to storms into next week.

The dam is at 185% and I can’t find any of the aerial shots of Brisbane that were available this morning (wanted to post one here, it’s pretty bad). I saw a headline about something to do with the dam and the government taking a gamble with easing weather, didn’t bother looking further, will cross that bridge if we get to it. Seems like a sketchy situation but if you follow everything this government says you’ll end up too stressed and with too many sleepless nights.

This city is a mess, massive damage, and it’s a big clean up job, but I didn’t wake up to a horrible death toll and people trapped on the rooftops. It’s comparable to the 2011 floods re. stats (I made an error, referred to it as 2012 in an earlier post, it’s been a rough decade). I’m cautiously optimistic about Brisbane. Here are some tweets from today, then we’ll get to Lismore, not so good news, it’s catastrophic there.

Ok, now Lismore, which is a farming town in northern NSW, prone to flooding but this flood is an unprecedented, unbelievable event. It’s hell there right now. The residents were told to evacuate too late (same as Bris but far worse conditions). Massive rescue efforts this morning, people trapped on rooftops, in ceilings, people in the house screaming out for help, I expect the death toll won’t be known for days. A levee broke through the night, the dam is wildly overflowing, other levees expected to break (may have by now) and the entire town is being evacuated. Their town centre is a flowing river and the weather hasn’t eased last I checked. It’s horrendous and matches the energy I’ve been feeling since it began raining, when I say I was tense, I mean I had to keep consciously, forcibly relaxing my jaw (still feel it).

People are confused to discover that Lismore, again - prone to flooding and a farming town, has been left out of the disaster budget. I’m not confused.

Thousands evacuated in northern NSW as Lismore Faces worst-ever flood crisis

Unless something else crazy happens here, this is my final update. I’m busy and any spare time I have will be spent helping with the cleanup.

    Hello Mark in blue! Nice.

The short answer is that, for the most part, it’s Australian weather with events that are totally, totally extraordinary (yes, this is one of them), with a government that keeps dropping the ball, during and after these events. If I get the time at some point I’ll reply to your question in full with a few of my personal observations.

    Love to all.
