Freak heavy snowfall hits the Sahara desert; up to one metre deep

The sand dunes were turned into snow-covered hills

These bizarre scenes from the Sahara Desert show locals sledging down sand dunes after the heaviest snowfall in living memory.

Photographers have taken incredible pictures this morning of ONE METRE deep snow covering the sand in the small Saharan desert town of Ain Sefra.

The town saw a sprinkling of snow just before Christmas, when a few flakes settled on the red sand dunes of the world's hottest desert for the first time in 37 years.

But today the snow has been falling steadily and is now waist deep in some parts of Ain Sefra, which is known as "The Gateway to the Desert."

The snow has caused chaos in the town, with passengers stranded on buses after the roads became slippery and icy.

Children are making the most of the rare snow storm and are building SNOWMEN in the desert town and SLEDGING down the sand dunes.

Photographer Sekkouri Kamel, 38, said: "It started snowing at around 1.30am this morning and is now one metre deep in some places. It's absolutely incredible to have so much snow.

The whole area had a peppering of snow

The freak weather has totally changed the look of the place

Apart from the sprinkling before Christmas, snow was last seen in Ain Sefra on February 18, 1979, when the snow storm lasted just half an hour.

The Sahara Desert covers most of Northern Africa and it has gone through shifts in temperature and moisture over the past few hundred thousand years.

Although the Sahara is very dry today, it is expected to become green again in about 15000 years.

It comes after expats who thought they had left behind the cold British winter and moved to Spain were in for a shock this week when Majorca and Benidorm were covered in a blanket of snow .

Brits who have retired to sunnier climes were greeted by the first snow in years with temperatures on the island of Majorca dipping to -2C.

Roads in the small Majorcan village of Valldemossa ground to a halt while on the mainland in Benidorm temperatures dipped below zero despite the average for January normally expected to be a balmy 17C.

Beaches, pools and promenades were covered with a layer of snow as temperatures dipped down to just 7C in the Costa Blanca.

Earth Changes Summary | December 2016

    Published 20th January 2017

As we enter a new and uncertain geopolitical climate with the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, so we also appear to be entering a new and uncertain natural climate.

The relentless global escalation of extreme weather, geological upheaval, and cosmic bombardment continued last month, ending a year the authorities claim was (again) "the warmest ever - and it's humans' fault."

Still no explanation from them as to how 'man-made CO2' is responsible for - among other new or increased natural phenomena - all the sinkholes opening up and killing people; the meteor fireballs raining out of the sky; redirecting the course of high-altitude jet streams; and increasing the frequency of earthquakes two or three-fold.

But pay no attention to those details - they're probably just signs that we're heading into another ice age.

Highlights in this Earth Changes Summary video for December 2016 include:

Persistent, heavy fog across the world last month - northern Europe, India, China and the Persian Gulf

Return of the 'polar vortex' to both North America and Russia, bringing record-breaking snow and cold temperatures

Snow in the Sahara Desert, Arabian Desert, and Syria

Thundersnow, snow-nadoes, 'fog walls', 'fog domes', 'spinning ice disks', and other bizarre cold weather-related phenomena!

Severe flash-flooding (and a tornado) across southern 'sunny' Spain

Outbreak of forest fires in the Swiss Alps... in winter!?

At least a half dozen spectacular meteor fireball events in North and South America, Europe, and Central Asia

A string of powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions around the Pacific Ring of Fire

Widespread flooding in Southeast Asia during its 'dry season'

Record-breaking rainfall in Australia's desert regions

Freak snowfall brings winter to summer in southern alpine areas [NZ]

    CATE BROUGHTON
    Last updated 13:55, January 22 2017

EWAN MACKIE Cardrona Alpine Resort guests awoke to 30 centimetres of fresh snow on Sunday morning.

Guests at Cardrona Alpine Resort, near Wanaka, have woken to a winter wonderland – in the middle of summer.

Light snow began falling on Saturday afternoon, but increased to heavy falls overnight, leaving a 30-centimetre base, Cardrona marketing coordinator Matt McIvor said. The white stuff was still falling on Sunday morning.

In five years at the resort McIvor said he had never seen these conditions in January.

BEN McEWAN Snow at the Hermitage Hotel in Aoraki Mt Cook village on Sunday morning.

"It definitely feels like winter up here. This is a powder day."

Some resort guests from Vietnam and China told McIvor they had never seen snow before.

The resort is open for summer activities, including mountain biking, carting, walking and tubing, but the record snowfall would put a stop to those today, McIvor said.

ROSS LAWRENCE Fresh snow at The Remarkables skifield near Queenstown on Sunday morning.

"I think they'll be making snowmen today."

The access road to the resort was restricted to four-wheel drive only, McIvor said.
The unusually heavy snowfall also hit The Remarkables, near Queenstown, ski area, manager Ross Lawrence said.

EWAN MACKIE A car covered in snow at the Cardrona Alpine Resort.

"The quantity is not regular, but we did get heavy snow like this in the summer of 2014/15."

Lawrence said falls had stopped by midday on Sunday and temperatures had warmed up during the morning.

"I don't think it will be around for long."

Metservice forecaster Cameron Coutts said the heavy snowfall in the Southern Alps was "quite unusual" for this time of year and was a result of the deep low that had created ideal conditions.

"It has brought the moist air over the top of cold air at lower levels."

There were no signs of more snow-making conditions in the coming week, as Coutts said the South Island would settle back in to a westerly and southwesterly pattern from Monday, meaning "spring-like" weather.

Regular fronts would continue to bring rain and some light snow fall before warmer weather later in February, he said.

The good news is we are getting a sunshine break between storms, the bad news is the first storm slowed down and was absorbed, combining into one massive storm rolling at us...

The north pole is moving towards Greenland, which seems to be helping...

"Greenland’s ice sheet kicked off 2017 gaining about eight gigatons of snow and ice, which is well above what’s usually added to the ice sheet Jan. 1 for the last 24 years, according to Danish meteorologists.

In fact, Greenland’s ice sheet has been gaining ice and snow at a rate not seen in years based on Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) data. DMI reports the Greenland ice sheet’s “mass surface budget” has been growing significantly since October.

Greenland’s “surface mass budget” for winter 2016-2017 is already more than two standard deviations higher than the northern ice sheet’s mean snow and ice accumulation over the last 24 years. DMI data shows the ice sheet added 8 gigatons of ice and snow Jan. 1, well above the standard deviation for that day.". http://dailycaller.com/2017/01/02/gr...-ice-and-snow/

I don't know the ambient average temperature of where you live TargeT but there's a tub of oil here that is always solid and the house temp is 20-22c during the day. It melts to liquid on your finger.

I think coconut oil solidifies at 72* or so? its normally 75-85 in the winters, been hitting the high 60's at night.

I know this is anecdotal, but I live 17* above the equator and have some of the most stable "weather/climate" in the world (anyone near the equator does), lots of locals mention its been very cold lately (I like it.. haha) and then I saw my coconut oil being solid..

    might be something there.

I live in Southern Ontario Canada. January is usually our coldest month. We have been well above the freezing mark for the majority of the month. A warm winter here with lots of rain and fog. Today is a snow rain mix but I think we are going up above freezing once again later today. Not unprecedented weather but definitely unusual.
