Default PRIMER (2004): the best (and most complex) time travel movie ever made

Many have said that Primer (2004) is the best time travel movie ever made. One critic said they totally loved it, had seen it eight times, and STILL didn't understand it.

It was directed by Shane Carruth, who also wrote it, produced it, filmed it, edited it, scored it, and starred in it. Not just that, but it only cost him something like $7,000. It earned millions at the box office.

And it is the best time travel movie ever made. (I've only seen it twice, and no, I didn't understand it, either. )

Just watched it and loved it. Thought I was doing well but in the last twenty minutes realised I was lost.

This helps, as well — just a little! Though the looping storyline is far more complex than that.

The YouTube Illustrated Explanation (which is 23 mins long!) is outstanding... entertainment in itself. (Advice: download it, step through it slowly, and make good notes.)

The comments are wonderful. Here are a few:
    • I understood this movie perfectly at the first time watching it. Then I watched this video and realized I didn't understand anything at all.
    • I need an explanation video for this explanation video.
    • I watched this film tomorrow, but it didn't make much sense. Now, with this explanation, I'll try again yesterday.
    • Now I understand why I didn't understand the film. I still don't understand the film, but I understand why I don't understand it.
The girl who made the Illustrated Explanation — who has to have a genius level IQ, not a joke — watched the movie 8 times in detail (also having seen it before), and also consulted various internet blogs and discussions. Even so, she acknowledges that she may have missed some aspects.

The best line from her video explanation: (and you'd need to watch it to laugh at this)
    • "And now, here's where it's going to get complicated."
That was at 10:00. It was way more than complicated, long before that.

And the best line from the movie: (one small part that was actually easy to understand)
    • "I haven't eaten anything since later today"

No kidding. Watch the Illustrated Explanation first. It won't spoil anything!

In fact, it'll inspire you to see the movie, so you get to understand the explanation.

Did the first universe cease to exist or the original just lost its existence? It seems to be where two timelines collapse together, however, it may as well be two universes that collapse together, or a new universe being created calling for the death of the first one. It would not be transference upon death from one universe to another exact opposite, as Linda Moulton Howe explained in one of her last videos. Unless it is transference.

I will listen to the movie..... thanks Bill for this graph, it pushes me to listen.

    Great subject for sure.
I have watched the film in the past and don't remember having problems understanding it, but then I haven't complicated my mind set by watching the explanation vid Doh O.O

    BTW Bill love your sentence:
Quote I watched this film tomorrow, but it didn't make much sense. Now, with this explanation, I'll try again yesterday.
RAM/Richard Alan Miller is the one to ask about 'Time' and how to use/manipulate and understand it

From the explanation video, what I understood is that it is all a question of probabilities with multiple variables. Depending on the decision making branches, probabilities will change and everyone existence as well. And for a while, many probabilities may co-exist, potentially impacting the universe we are in, but not yet until the observation choice is made.

In fact, a probability is "fixed", permanent, when we are observing/living it, through choice or decision making. Goes with new quantum science and with some eastern spiritual concepts. Having two probabilities coexist at the end of the movie tells me that the choices of observation are not made yet. Therefore one probability (the original) has to disappear since a choice has to be made or when the choice is made (regardless of the timing of the choice, since we travel in time, time becomes irrelevant - while probabilities and choices are).

Aren't we excellent creators troughout countless probabilities?

Will and I watched this movie a couple of nights ago, after seeing this post. We were totally immersed all the way through, then looked at each other and admitted we hadnt understood most of it (Will couldnt see most of it anyway, and I had to do some explaining). But it is fascinating, and understandable on some level - I'm just not sure which level... It also took my mind somewhere else, and left me questioning my own reality, which was slightly unnerving!

Looks interesting. Time travel could make an enormous monstrosity of a tangled web.
It makes me dizzy thinking about it. But for all we know, it could be at the foundation of this reality. Looking forward to watching PRIMER tonight -- and being more confused than I already am.

Bill, I agree Primer is a little masterpiece of a movie and he did make it for shoeshine and peanut butter. It's very hard to follow but those youtube "primers" help sort it out. It's all about "gee when did which version of these guys get in the box..." LOL

His second movie Upstream Color is even better and even more enigmatic (but not in a timelines kind of way). This guy Shane Carruth is definitely someone to keep an eye on. He's got a vision and the "Earnestness" to carry it out. I did hear that Hollywood offered him a bunch of money to make his next film (supposedly with their hands off) but not sure what's up with that project.

We need more filmmakers who are pros and not afraid to deal with the bigger questions and mysteries in their movies. And he loves to shoot on film---Hurrah for celluloid!!

No kidding. Watch the Illustrated Explanation first. It won't spoil anything!

In fact, it'll inspire you to see the movie, so you get to understand the explanation.
Thanks for alerting us to this film Bill, and the explanatory video accompaniment. Right, you got me: I've just got to see this film, being a bit of a buff and relishing a challenge! By the sounds of things this may be a director who has outdone the mighty David Lynch. 'Mulholland Drive' was a twice watch, 'Ah now I get it!' type of film. Fancy that though: a director who has given Lynch a run for his moulah. I do some free freelance creative review journalism for a friend's magazine and may do a review and point them Avalon's way - we'll see. For now I'm somewhat intellectually sado-masochistically relishing being bamboozled. Wonder how many times it'll take me to watch without getting it, at all? See you, or not, on the other side........
