Re: Interesting Bits and Pieces about China
Text:
The most important moment in a young person’s life:
13 million high-school graduates will be taking the college entrance exam (“gaokao”) in a few days in China. 😱
The top universities accept only about 50,000 students — that’s 0.4% acceptance rate. Ouch!
In the end, about 10 million will end up going to college, so it’s not too bad for the rest.
But great innovations and progress will depend on those 0.4% crème de la crème.
This exam tradition is almost 2000 years old in China. It’s the basis of meritocracy.
Text:
By the way. Gaokao is not like SAT in the US.
Gaokao is on another level. It involves two days of exams that have multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and essay questions.
And the subjects are everything under the Sun:
Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Chinese language, history, philosophy, foreign language (English) and so on.
The exam depends on what the student wishes to study in college. Math is one of the compulsory subjects.
A sample math question:
If x + y ≥ a, x - y ≤ -1, and the minimum value of z = x + ay = 7, what is a? 😰
A. -5
B. -5 or 3
C. 3
D. 5 or -3
